  • kudos for your advice

  • does anybody know if the music played from 00:30 on is part of a song?? beautiful.

  • @kiaragre It is yes, but I cant remember what its called. He plays it in his set with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai G3 Concert.

  • @kiaragre Found it, its called Glasgow Kiss

  • @lukejperry thank you :)

  • does anybody here know what is the name of the long pedal controller? that he used? in this demo.., he didn't mention the long pedal one >.< plz help me guys thx.., ^^

  • i want to be like Petrucci, but im only practicing one hour a day. Im fucked.

  • somehow, i doubt petrucci uses only boss pedals...

and for anyone whos never played a john petrucci model ernie ball thru mesa boogies, thats where the tone is coming from.

  • iv got that exact pedal an i cant get that sound!!!!! all the notes just clash and its bad can please help me

  • you're right!!

  • Men commenting on which way they like his body better.. I didn't realize there were so many queers that play guitar.

  • INTRO (VERY RELAXED) all right so you hear it kinda floating away ..... DAAAAAMN!!! Petrucci is an alien he is the best!!

  • I like skinny Petrucci better too. His stomach looks like it will swallow his guitar one day.

  • I work at least 8 or 9 hours a day, so if you want to be a great guitarist 6 hours isn't even as mush a normal person works,

It is his job, and he gets paid well for what he does.

  • @ManuelBetten he said he did that during highschool, and back then he wasnt getting paid for what he did

  • muito tronxo o acorde dos 0:57!

  • I love that clean chord progression with phaser at 00:30... I'm gonna make a preset with my TC G-Force just to play that xD

  • I did it, mate...It's astonishing...I never get tired of it ;)

  • How can you even practice 6hours a day? Is your brain even capable of doing so?

Shame on all the things that keep me from playing 6h a day!

  • My first semester at college I practiced 6-7 hours every day. Needless to say, I started performing like total shit in school. I still passed everything but barely haha

Now that I'm in school and have a job I'm lucky if I can get an hour and a half every day. Shit sucks.

  • most important thing is to have a very focused mind on your practice, to organize your practice and to practice over playing (well, play sometimes to master some songs, their phrasing and all) , the difference in practicing and playing is that when you practice you play stuff that you can't do correctly or can't do at all, to try it slower until you get it at the full speed (or if you want to speed it up it's your choice) . One hour and a half is good enough.

  • the first 5 hours are easy... it's that elusive 6th hour that separates the men from the boys.

  • Nah dude, I used to do 10 hours a day o.O

But I go to a Music College now so I play whenever I can, including during lessons aha, the bonus' of music college! =D

  • you wish

  • I guess I could never be like Petrucci cause everyones different ^_^ .

  • the beginning is such and adrenaline pump

  • who needs social life when you can play like a god XD

  • ouch. i just heard that he practised 6 hours a day when he was kid... i now feel like i wasted a lot of time during the last years lol

  • nooo... he practised 63 hours a day! he used time warp!

  • They all say you have to practice. But only a few people also indicate that you have to try new things to get better. :)

  • I like skinny petrucci better than the mass hunk of steroids PETROPPOLIS.(His muscular alter ego)

  • He's a body builder, He doesn't use roids.

  • lol PETROPPOLIS

  • I liked the hair cut from here and look. NOW it looks like he can break the guitar in half ... it looks like a toy on him

  • actal petrucci vs undertaker hahahaha

  • lol, but he had to get buff because of his injuries while skiing. He says it was bothering with his guitar playing, so he's probably not afraid to admit he'd been using steroids.

  • pull me under

  • i live at the beach so

  • dont think i have ever seen this guy without a 7 string guitar. he ownes.

  • he has a signature 6 string, i have it lol

  • hes playing one right here, unless thats what you ment is this is the only place

  • thats what i ment, this was my first time

  • the vast majority of his work is done with a 6 string

  • holy crap, SIX HOURS A DAY... thats nuts man. I play for 4 hours a day and i can barely manage that.

you get home from school at 4 oclock. 4-10 oclock...

  • He doesnt go to school...

  • He did go to school when he used to practice that much

  • wich boss pedal is he is using there the dd- 20, the phaser, the ctunner, the noise supresor and the wha. another oss pedal?

  • Good grief... That is a horrible phaser. I can see why he doesn't use it in his actual rig... :-P.

  • i know it sounds like shit i sold it after having it for like 2 weeks get a phase 90

  • Phase 90s are good. I'm a Small Stone guy, though.

  • boss are B series pedals (most of them are digital). i own a few of them cuz i didnt know shit about pedals at the time i ghought them. now, i do know the important informations about pedals in general. after buying 7 boss pedals......

The phaser sounds horrible in this vids cuz the setting he used IS horrible but its still possible to have cool phase sounds out of that IF the Resonance knob is all the way down otherwise it sounds digitalised too much.

poeple buy boss cuz its cheap

  • Cool. Cheers for the info... Incidentally, the older Boss units are great (some of them, anyway), and yes, it's the analog thing that's a big part of it, I agree. I have a series 1 MIJ DD-3 that's very nice indeed.

  • if you go to school, or work

and you practice 6 hours a day

when do you have time to live??

i mean hanging out with my friends its more valuable than being a shrederer or a famous musician...just my opinion

i love dream theater!!! thx JP! but i'm going to the beach anyway!:)

  • that is so true...if you want to be good in playing guitar you must have money and time becouse you cant go to work and play 6 hours a day guitar you just cant....I know that

  • The thing is that you don't have to play six hours a day.. Hour will do if you spend it properly :) Everyone can't, ofcourse, be a Petrucci or Gilbert or Satriani coz they have undeniable talent, but you can make music you like. I, myself, value ability to improvise and the knowledge of instrument and music over the x notes per minute.

  • 8-4, get home at 5

play from 5 to 11, go to sleep, wake up at 6.

    works for me.

  • yes but, social life 0 hours per day

  • *shrug*

meh, it'd be like that anyway. :P

  • lol thats a great segway from rippin shit limb from limb to a nice little advice column.... so uh people are always asking for my advice......

  • I wiah there was a space were we could ask john fos advice...

  • Thanks Petrucci, u're right

  • i know the right amp is a roadking but any one now if the left is a dual ro triple?? or what???

  • Yes. It is.

  • they are both roadkings. he never used triple recs, only road kings, mark IVs, and lonestars.

  • Both are Rk's

  • is there any way to download youtube vids?

  • yeah download altavista youtube downloader

    1.download the video

    2. convert it to windows media player format

  • If you hang out and go the beach dont forget to put your guitar on Ebay!!!

  • that clean progression he plays is beautiful, if anyone knows if it is from a song can they please tell me, cause i want to learn it, and hear the full thing (if it is a song.)

but man he's the boy like!

  • It's not from any DT song atleast.

  • i dont think its from his solo album either.. hmmmmmmmz cheers for replying by the way

  • and phazer pedals.

  • what does he use to get the distortion??

  • his fingers.

  • thanks it helped me a lot. btw, do you get distortion with phaser pedal?? wow thats amazing...

  • yea the distortion really helps when u combine phazer pedals and finger pinch harmonics.

  • The Mesa Boogies you can clearly see in the background

  • that's the result of six hours practicing... You have to have just a little talent for playing... and practicing a lot if you want to reach john :)

  • i practice tottally all the time.

i wank in the morn the aft the eve and when im sleep.

diss a good, and make me the best wanker der is.

  • Mostly true, but 6 hours is really only for the die hard.

I practice only about half that time and it already cuts into my social life plenty...

But he is right about organization. For example, I used to practice ONLY technique and never really studied music theory and I kept up that particular routine for about 2 years. Just recently I'm committing at least a half hour of music theory studies along with technique and am moving up to a full hour. It will eventually even out to half and half...

  • 6 hours straight?!!woah..ill try it..very inspiring advice..tnx!!i learned alot!!

  • he takes FOREVER to say anything. it makes him sound stupid.

  • 6 hours a day is crazy, and he sounds like such a bore no offence. Probly because of his lack of mates XD

  • yeah right..then go get a 15W line6

  • Mesa Boogie is the BEST amp for the lead. That's the way he's good. Mesa Boogie il less good in rithym, but it is good.

  • You're a huge newb. Enough said.

  • I love the chorus part. very nice

  • his advice is inspiring

  • for a second i thought he was going to play "for the love of God"...

  • Greatest player on Earth. Everything about him is just awesome!!!!!! Lol

  • i practice everyday, but dont have the time to practice for 6 hours cos i got school

  • good for you. Nice backup plan. I'm sure JP missed a lot and possibly regrets missing some things, but he is probably thanlkful he is in a kick ass group.

  • What is the background music that kicks in at 2:08?

  • preeemo is "glascow kiss"....

  • glasGow kiss

  • Glasgow Kiss when His talkin

  • Thanks Petrucci

  • wow now i know why he's one of the best guitar player of the planet.....i really thinks he's the best ....but thats because i love so much his writing and his style....just amazing :D

  • i agree, hes the best

  • Agreed.

  • Lets hear you play LOLOL

  • Oh really? tooOoOo bad

  • haha oh wow I normally don't respond to tard comments like snapascrews but I just had to say this... "THERE IS NO SOFTWARE TO POST VIDEOS TO YOUTUBE" DUMMMY...

  • anyone know what song that is or where i can get a tab for it when he is using the phaser?

  • the ultimate guitarist....

  • hahaha, ur a retard

  • Same could be said of you... pick up a guitar

  • Sick pedals.

  • what gauge strings does he use in standard tuning?

  • Regular Slinkys - 10-46

  • JP is the god in guitar

  • the fantastic sound comes from the mesa's not the boss pedals

  • Amen!

  • I am actually using my vacation hours at work to practice 8 hours on my keyboard...byt that is only once a week!

  • I play 4 hours a day because that's the only free time I have haha.

  • Haha 4 hours is plenty if its constant right..i practice anywhere from 4-8 hours (that length at least 3 or 4 times a week..sumtimes i go a day only practicing an hour or two.But as long as you are practicing everyday you'll see dramatic improvements..i don't know why im writing this it just came on my mind reading your quote.haha

  • damn, how do u find the time for 6 hrs a day :| he must not have had much homework :P

  • "We were kind of recluses"... LOL

  • hehe! estou feliz!!! o meu idolo a tocar num boss wawa igual ao meu!!!vou dar um pum de alegria!!!!
