Wow! I'll say it backwards...Wow! Outstanding job on your SP layout! All I could do was smile!
I'm working on my humble Souther Pacific N scale layout with those great SD45T-2 and SD40T-2 tunnel motors I remember running through the Tehachapis out of Bakersfield.
You have inspired me very much! Dig those cab forwards to!
@pointyguitarz Thank you very much for your kind and generous comments. When people enjoy the layout and videos, it is gratifying and makes the effort involved in putting it all together worthwhile. Bill R.
@TheRACINGRANDY I'm glad you like the layout. Thanks. Actually it took somewhat less than a century -- about ten years. And during that ten years there were several long periods of inactivity. Bill R
@TheRACINGRANDY Yes it is possible and I do plan to do it eventually. The GS-4 that I would like to use is a Sunset brass model. It is DCC, but has no sound. I'd like to get a sound decoder for it first. Bill R.
@TheRACINGRANDY Same problem with those units. And they are all powered so while it could be done, adding sound to them would not be trivial. I might shoot a video of them and dub in a sound track from my Daylight PAs.
The Passenger train that had the green on the way down, I think I saw more than two observation cars in the consist, was it a Business Car, er, Corporate train?
@billr991 No, what I meant was, was there more than one heavyweight Observation car on the decending double headed passenger train, I recognized the " ugh " kato business car mascarading as an espee business car.
@billr991 Yeah sorry, I realized that after I posted the comment. Great vid though I sure like them Cabforwards! Good ole Espee, sure miss that railroad. I can just imagine SD70ACEs and ES44AC's in SP speed lettering! Hmm.
I just wanted tell say, WHO!!! I thought I have seen some nice layouts in my time, but my friend yours really sets the bar quite high. I’m at a real lose for words. Great job! Sadly now when I look at my layout, I give a big HHHmmmm…..
jmdintz, thank you for the very kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. You can find out more about the layout by visiting my layout web site. The URL is in video description box just below the video window.
I'll think about shooting a roster video, though it may be quite some time before I'll get to it as I have several other projects going and we are also in the middle of ski season...
Bill, this is probably the best home layout I've seen! The scenery is beautiful, your equipment is great, and the run is long, exciting, and interesting. I can only dream of having a layout anywhere near the caliber of this one! Keep posting! I'd love to see a locomotive roster video or guided tour of the layout.
Bigdoggie - Thank you for the compliments. The rocks were done with hydrocal castings using Woodland Scenics rubber molds. The rock castings are applied to the sides of the cuts using a thick hydrocal mixture. The areas between the castings are then filled with hydrocal and carved with a dental pick to match the castings. After the hydrocal has set, the rocks are first painted base colors and then shadows are added with india ink and highlights added with a white dry wash.
My dad and I are beginners, he and I both goth the daylight steam engine for christmas, he just layed a base down, and we are thinking of what kind of layout to do. I like the idea of heading into the mountains like your extremely fabulous set-up you have, and I was wondering how did you make the rock so realistic? they are perfect.
Waaaay cooool! Enjoyed this one!

great vid.dont care if light is red haha.looking at all the hard work that has been done.best to you from new zealand.

Great vid, I like how the engineer just ignores the double red signal at 3:45.
Joshuajlawn 9 months ago
@Joshuajlawn - The exposure on both signal lights is blown out, so that the color is not apparent. The lower light at 3:45 is actually yellow.
