I use plugins extensively, every day. But what I used to spend on outboard nowadays I do spend in preamps. You can replace a compressor or an eq with a good emulation, but you can't regenerate what you didn't capture in the first place. A first grade pre is a terrific weapon. I have an avalon 737 and a bunch of api 512. The 610 is next on the list. Some of my mid price mics sound like 2000 bucks coming through the pre's. Definitely worth it.
Nice bit of gear, and totally worth the bucks. Anyone slagging off this pre is obviously someone with little experience. If you get to this level of pre, then it's all about what your own ears like. People who can't hear the difference should stick with their Joe Meek and get a real job. I suppose the LA2A was a piece of crap too
you know it really PISSES me off when someone insults my intelligence, making us musicians be like blondies; making us think "WOW! a classic channel strip! $2000, just because it "brings" the sound of the sixties!" -THIS DOES NOT OVERALL MAKE MUSIC BETTER! it's just an overpriced box with electonics, of which you can get better results for 1/10th that price... that's right, $200! - UA are freaking SCAMMERS! I'm sure the insides of this cost less than $150 - making a superficial profit!
@BlackSoulent well, the plugins are a near representation of the hardware, but eventually, the final mix will still be digitized to a 24-bit 94 Khz or 192 Khz format, which basically un-does the whole point. plus the plugin price is still expensive! with that price, I might as well get an actual cheaper version! - I mean seriously, no one can tell me that the research and the component price of this so called LA-610 MK II is more than $200! now that's what I call a SCAM!
A better result from a $200 pre?? You should upload a demo of your world famous $200 pre. Then we can all insult your intelligence together. I suppose you think a Telefunken V76 is just 60's garbage as well. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Peace.
It's good. But I'd rather use an Avalon for speak, and a Tube-Tech for singing and Instruments.. But it's good.

@eerereps are the plugins just as good as the hardware?

Please explain how digitizing the final mix effects the original source of the preamp?
