  • someone tell me. did the master complain about the drums in the classic series?

  • @johnTRAN93 No. The drums are new series only.

  • @johnTRAN93 The Master just used to be evil for the sake of it.. Now that have to give him some sort of psychological reason for it... Ruined the character in my opinion =(

  • And people said the Classic series had no action!

  • LOL I don not understand half the things the master says. And everyone I love all the masters from this one to Simm. They all rock in diffrent ways

  • You can do better than that Doctor! Even in extremis, I WEAH TEH TASH TE TOOGOO!

  • A bit hard to actually understand what he's saying.

  • If there's one thing I miss about the original Master, its his seriousness. The new master is great and all, but his stories end up so silly (like him transforming the whole human race into himself).

  • I wonder what happened to him that made him so different from the others. Even his grumpy first incarnation was nicer than these guys.

  • Deadly Assassin i one of my favourite Tom Baker episodes!

The Classic Who episodes had such better scripts and story lines than the new episodes.... =(

  • @abskwl A generalization. Classic Who has it's share of crap. Not so much in Baker's time though.

  • Why does he miss these people? The whole planet is made up of assholes who despise him!

  • @aquagrl63 In the End of Time the doctor says that when he spoke of the Time Lords as being great people, it was how he wanted to remember them rather than the corrupted society they slowly became, especially in the Time War with Rassilon wanting to destroy time. The Doctor does have some allies/friends from his home though- his granddaughter Susan, Romana, Drax and probably a few more, he was even friends with the master once, all of them dying would leave him pretty lonely.

  • @TheLegacyofHitchcock I'm not sure if Susan is a time lord.

  • @aquagrl63 same, I think that a Gallifreyan only receives the title of Time Lord when they graduate from the academy, along with regeneration as a gift and possibly the slow aging process. My theory is that the doctor left Gallfirey with her before she could complete her studies, and therefore she wouldn't outlive David when she decided to stay with him on Earth, though I know some books say otherwise, we'll probably never know.

  • @aquagrl63 She was Gallifreyan. A Time Lord is a completely different species, one will a quadruple helix of DNA while Gallifreyans have a triple helix. That, as well as the Rassilon Impermiture gives them the abilities of a Time Lord.

  • @emROARS That's not true at all. There's never been any canon statements that there's any physiological differences between a Time Lord and an ordinary Gallifreyan. The general consensus is that given what's been stated in the series as well as the books suggest that it's a social status and not a biological difference (like a high class and middle class sort of system).

  • @Vlorsutes they're different in the way that they're 'upgraded' gallifreyans. it's like if our dna mutated into something else. it happens when a gallifreyan created a symbiotic bond with a TARDIS. It lets him travel in time indefinitely.

  • @emROARS timelords and gallifreyans are the same species there not different its just some like to stay on gallifrey

  • @emROARS Maybe genetic engineering

  • @aquagrl63

They're still his people. The human race is full of dicks, but we'd miss them if we were suddenly the only ones left. :I

  • I didn't see the original series... yet. But it is me or galifrey looks like the emerald city from the wizard of oz ? a little fortress of solitude likes too. Ho and I pretty like the bad student aspect from the doctor at the end ^^.

  • Gallifrey was a big public school? No wonder the Doctor ran off to go and meet girls.

  • Love that the Master starts shouting before he falls..

Ah, old series how fun you are. So many fun Master stories to peruse..

  • I prefer the original series too. Nowadays it seems like it's all flash and small substance.

(and it seems they are taking liberties with changing things from the Original series too)

  • My favorite version of the Master has to be Anthony Ainley in Survival.

  • My favourite Master. He has proper hatred over the Doctor. I also like Ainley and Simm

  • @CYBERDOODY Don't forget Roger Delgado!!!

  • @theman2017inc I` have`nt seen a delgado story yet!!!

  • @theman2017inc Oh i did see sea devils. He was alright but i need to see more before i pass judgement

  • @CYBERDOODY Too bad they don't repeat the CLASSIC series on BBC or the digital channels. Delgado was somewhat different to his successor Ainley and vastly better than was John Simm though that's my opinion!!!

  • @theman2017inc apears on sky in early morning sometimes with specials at holidays saw over 20 eps last year

  • THIS is how to write a Master story. The Master and Doctor are forever enemies, and while they have a massive respect for each-other, will always put their goals before one another.

  • I still don't know what's up with the Master, but it was weird after reading this comic just a few days ago. Now it makes sense.

    caycowa.deviantart(dot)com/art/DW-The-Master-returns-161218779

  • @MantisSage it is the master after his final body. staying alive purely out of hate for the doctor

  • This version of the master is my favourite: he's like a deformed, rotting lich ever plotting the demise of his arch-enemy, the Doctor.

  • now thats a time lord. snobby, and always looking down their nose at people

  • @ozmonster2000

In the older series, everything is much different to how it is now. The Master always dressed peculiarly I think.

  • @TheGearsKeepTurning well that was the idea. it wasn't about belnding in, the first master wore a sort of high necked suit coat. It was actually fairly normal compared to the frilly 3rd doctor. this master wore the robe to hide his decaying body and the anthony ainley master wore the same clothes as the body he stole

  • @OmegaShenron6574 He's never lost his perchant for the color black, tough

  • I rather like this master

the only problem is when the mask muffles his diolouge

  • He is on his 13th and final generation

  • love it when the doctor pushes the master down the stairs :)

  • After the first actor who played the Master died of a car crash, the Master character disappeared for several seasons. When he was brought back, it was shown that he was at the end of his regenerations. Hence him looking like a skeletal version of himself. It is not until the 5th Doctor's time period when he receives a new body from The Keeper of Traken, where the actor becomes Anthony Aienly, and the Doctor (played by Peter Davison) gains the companion Nyssa

  • @Jigsaw5262

    Hello, doctor

    Hello, Master

    Is it bad news?

Well, I don't know how to say this, so I'll be blunt. You're suffering from a car crash. We have no treatment for this sort of ailment.

  • Actually it was the end of Tom Baker's era that Anthony Ainley took over as the Master.

  • Aww Tom Baker <3

  • im getting this on dvd this christmas with pyramids of mars.

  • 9 out of 10 huh?

  • Jarring seeing The Master like this, after being introduced to him via John Simm. Great villain.

  • for those who cut our teeth on the New series, these clips are really cool. thanks for posting!

  • Anyone else notice how much the TL in the pink robe blinks?

  • get a room, boys

  • No. Not for many years.

  • This set is really good! (The Master's look in this creeps me out...)

  • is it me or does this scene remind any one of the 1996 tv movie, with McGann verses roberts master?

just in general tone and feel i mean

  • Not really, although both McGann and Eric Roberts as the Master were good, the story was awful.

Davies version more resembles that mentality than Classic Who.

  • i just mean the whole throwing eachother down and threatened distruction

  • I'd like to see that movie on youtube

  • Its out on dvd in may!!!

  • or very easy to download if u look hard enough

  • Got the official dvd of this now! I did download some Dr Who episodes but the picture quality was really bad.

  • Fantastic even by today's standards.

  • Great production values for this classic episode!

  • Do you really believe this is the end of the Master? He will return he must return he is the only one besides the Daleks who can really go toe to toe with the Doctor. Simm should return we do not need yet another change of Master. let Simm come on back for another story or story arc.

  • hence why I phrased it as possible, which is why the left the feminine hand clutching the master's ring to avoid paintint the following generationof writers into a corner.

  • Tom Baker you frigging legend! kick his arse! lol

  • tennant, donna, and martha rule, rose sucks:(

  • Baker and Sladen rule!

  • sarah jane wasnt in this episode

  • I know that! I was just making a comment

  • hee they do rule

  • Rule what?

  • The whole UNIVERSE!!! Time itself.

  • YUP all of time and space is Tom Baker and Liz Sladen's (or 4 and Sarah Jane's)

  • u know the master in this..... i think he is gunna come back looking like that

  • Nah, John Simm expressed his disire to reprise the role in an interview, a few days after Last of the Time Lords aired. So I reckon they'll bring him back just as he was.

  • it's possible that Lucy's the Rani

  • POssible, but unlikely.

  • or that donna is

  • "You lie!"

  • Time Lords speak really poshly except the doc o course lol

  • fantastic story, TB at his best and a scene where Mary Whitehouse's complaints were taken into account

  • if you pause at 1:03, you can see a prop made of card board! :)

  • "if you pause at 1:03, you can see a prop made of card board!"

I'd take cardboard made by talented adults over 30 years ago to today's CGI made by talentless kids any day. :)

  • oh yeah, lol!

  • This is my favourite Doctor Who story of all time. The Doctor playing the hero within The Matrix nightmare, total class!

  • Best Tom Baker episode EVER!!!!! XD

  • I agree and I would go further best DW episode of all. Forget the special effects, how can anyone who has seen both Classic and New say that Davies had done a good job?

  • Exactly Davies could do a good job if he didn't focus on the love story. the epi's could actually be interesting.

  • the romance brings more to the character and more to the story line! though i didnt like how much he concentrated on the Rose thing. i mean, he didnt even get over it at the end of 2years. and he shouldnt be that sad, shes still ALIVE, unlike his daughter who DIED! he had more of a reaction to rose being trapped in a paralell universe than his DAUGHTER DIEING!

  • Davies did a brilliant job! except for the Rose thing and some scenes that were a bit cheesy.

  • how is donna a loser? i liked her, but i dont think she really did anything. but that was because of the episodes. blame the script writer, not the character.

  • Fuck you

  • It's quite good that John Nathen-Turner decided to put the master back into Doctor Who with The keeper o Tracken as a follow up some years later

  • "hatered is a strength not a weakness"

  • 9 out of 10 for you as well :)

  • YOU LIE! haha, I enjoy this deformed master's lines. xD

  • this episode is so good i could watch it two thousand times over and never tire of it i love doctor who both new series and old doctor who now and forever!

  • the master is wearing a sash of rassilon

  • 9/10 indeed.

  • Wouldn't people on Gallifrey call him Theta and not The Doctor?

  • Is Theta the Doctor's real name? If so, how did you find that out?

  • I vaguely remember reading that, though I get the impression that if a time Lord chooses to call himself by another name then all the others accept that that is his name, even if they find it a little odd.

  • On old classmate Drax called him that. It was a school name apparently.

  • Theta Sigma was the Doctor's knickname in Gallifreyan school.

  • it's a nickname from collage

  • Thank you BBC, for destroying all the Doctor Who on Youtube. You've stolen the chance to see Classic Doctor Who from a whole generation of new fans and replaced it with a load of little clips. For shame!!!!

  • It would really help if people stopped confusing priacy with free advertising which brings more people to buy their product in the first place.

  • Yes, I do. I often think "I don't need to buy the latest release of classic Doctor Who..." but after watching it again, be it here or on free to air TV, I then find myself thinking "On the other hand, I'd like that one in the collection." You can't save a YouTube file nor is the picture quality that high. So yes, it makes me want to buy more.

    Cheers!

  • Actually, i think it would help better if the BBC used Doctor Who's serial nature to its full advantage by posting the first episode of each story on youtube for free with each new dvd, and then annoy everyone by making them buy the rest of the story to find out what happens next. Cheap, but a GREAT marketing strategy, and the more money there is for a Doctor Who budget, the better!

  • Yes, well, I wrote in response to a comment that the BBC were right to get all the fan uploads wiped. I mean, fans had gone to the trouble of upping the whole series. I reckon they should've left it. It was a massive pile of free advertising and exposure to new potential DVD buyers. And it encouraged me to go buy the DVDs.

    Ade.

  • Also, and this is quiet opionated so plz no nasty comments in return...

With the new series on air with tennent i've felt really annoyed because younger people have only seen that and see him and eccelson as the doctors. So they won't want 2 buy dvds of the old Doctors. But it's so easy to stumble upon stuff on youtube that they could see it by accident and say, "Hey this isn't so bad atcually." Also i tire of seeing tennent everyday, he really annoys me.

  • As a fledgling Dr. Who fan, I find that with Russell T. Davies writing brilliantly for the current series and referencing older story arcs and characters so often, I'm more curious and inclined to watch classic Dr. Who episodes.

I don't think you're giving the writers or young fans enough credit. The past doctors are hardly being written out.

And besides, they're all the same doctor, anywho. :)

  • it is still true though, only a very few (as in 2) friends of mine r bothered to watch teh old series and i've seen my younger brother's friends all praising and it honestly makes me feel quite angry. Plus Tom Baker used to play the part (he was silly) but with such seriousness that he was totally convincing. tennent and teh rest look like they're trying, but just taking teh piss too with their acting.

This is not meant to be insulting, just what i honestly see.

  • hey! i think number ten is the best! he brings more to the character and hes a reli good actor!

  • If you look hard enough you can find it. What ever you do do not look on my channel ;) plus theres a web called surfthechannel dont go there either

  • A great example of why the Tom Baker episodes even with bad special effects are better than the new DR Who

  • cool

  • I (being used to the episodes of today, and not being alive when Doctor Who first started), found that actually quite funny! The filming, and what looks like the Master hitting the Doctor with some sort of inflatable thing! I really, really enjoyed that clip!

  • The older series had a way to still captivate you, it was easy to look past the basic special effects. The stories were well written and except for a few (Polly and Peri...) actors did a great job with what they had.

  • A great story. RTD; this is how you write the doctor versus the master.

  • @lbjb247 i totally agree.

  • Fantastic episode. One of my favourites. Its a shame we didn't have a fight like that in the Last of the Time Lords.

  • It is pretty rare for the Doctor and Master to fight hand to hand,in a battle intended to be to the death. Usually they rely on their minds and cunning. Exceptions along with the scene here include Survival and the TV Movie.
