I have a box on the back of my delta recumbent trike. I take my pit bull out all the time. She runs for a couple of miles on the leash, often pulling me! When she slows down I ask her if she wants to ride in the box. She lets me know if she does & I put her in. She pokes her head out the side to see up the road & has a great time. Since she's a pit bull, I have a very short tether I hook to her harness when she's in the box just so OTHER people don't freak out.
