I wonder if your system gets used to some of the pathogens over time. I've seen some of the Amazon indians filter water from the side of a creek just like Dave is doing here and they suffer no ill effects from drinking it.
@wrenbrrd listen closely, he says it doesn't kill pathogens. But if Ur life depends on it and u don't have any way to disinfect the water, filtering it thru the sand gives you a fighting chance
I guess you knew that this particular water was alright to drink? (...since you were sipping from it without treating it.) Or are you implying that a few sips wouldn't hurt? Please let me know. Thanks for this, and for this great channel! I just watched the 11-minute video on primitive water purification. Fantastic! I'm going to subscribe now.
Hey Dave, this is an awesome way to filter water but like you said doesnt kill the pathogens.. well, i dont know too much about water borne pathogens but if your body encountered some of the pathogens enough could your body build up a kind of immunity to it? or would any of them have long term kinds of effects or just bad news for your bowels a few nights after... thanks for the knowledge dave, seems we all just keep learning, day after day. take care
stomach quit gurgling yet? or did you take immodium before shooting this? if i drank this i could shit through a screen door and not touch a wire! just hackin on ya. awesome vid. i'll remember that if i'm in a pinch, or constipated! ;-)>
Very good info. I was wondering how to get by with out boiling if that was not an option and this is easy. I could put a container in the hole to pull out and head back to the camp also. Thanks for the great info man
@chefdlb Very similar to a Gypsy well, used all over Europe well before the 1600's. America has a habit of re-naming things I have noticed. A Gypsy well is seldom dug near a running stream, more of a stagnant pool. Further from the waters edge, and deeper. There is no need to purify the water either, although you can if you want. Try and blow air through a handfull of soil, microbial organisms are too large for the interstitial spaces between alluvial soil particles.
Does the bank need to rock/sand, or could it be regular "soil" with grass and plants growing on it??? How about Southeastern clay??? Happy Thanksgiving Dave!!!
snails in stream , crawfish , minnows alive & active often the stream is reasonably good in my opinion ,,but when you can ,boil it ,,but recent water reports from mt streams have shocking toxic chem #'s ,,so research the area before ya depart ..just changing side of a Mt range can make the rate lower..living wildlife in water makes sence to me ,no insects around-troubled area, move
Dave, have you ever drank contaminated water and got sick and if so how bad is it and what are the warning initial signs that one should be looking for? Are there any over the counter items that you would suggest as a precaution(anti diarrhea ect.) THANKS!!
@basszack I have never gotten sick from water even oversaes during DS but most WB pathegeons take days to manifest so in a true Survival situation better to drink and be recued alive and get sick at home. Antibiotics will take care of most of it in a few days.
@basszack i used to be a combat medic & highly suggest looking into wormwood tea for malaria but make sure you dont get the wrong kind of it, get the edible one. it is 99.9% effective on all strains of malaria & the doctor meds are only good for specific strains if they know which one you have second they are only 80% effective. the most common signs are similar to the flu with stomach cramps. most water bourne illness comes 7-10 days later but a small few can come 3-5 but not life threatening
I love how Dave specifically warns that that this won't kill Giardia, but then drinks the water anyhow. Apparently Dave uses a testosterone filter in his blood to kill Giardia.
if you have no choice you dont have a choice....

Is this a particular safe way to drink? Do i have to worry about bacteria or is it all filtered through the ground?

Interesting..
If you were to loose your water container for some reason could you drop in a few drops of iodine? If you had it.
markshmily 1 year ago
@markshmily Remember that water is seeping constanly in this hole so for this purpose a liner would be advised, garbage bag or whatever you had.

surgicalshot 1 year ago
@surgicalshot I'm pretty sure he has videos of just that if you check his archives.
wishbone1138 1 year ago
@surgicalshot Yes but new pathogeons would seep in from the ground as evaporation occured, you would need a liner before boiling

so in a sense, it's just to pre filter before boiling so you don't end up with a bunch of crap in the bottom of your pot.
flamedrag18 1 year ago
@flamedrag18 True but if you cant boil it will remove some of the crap but obviously not all, anything is better than nothing at that point.
