@grapehyacinth ja is like yes in english terms think of it like amazing and then jo is more encouraging so in English terms it would be outstanding... If you want someone to do something and they say no you could say jo to add more emphasis..

'jo' has many functions but one of them is to answer a negative question. so if someone asks you: 'din't you eat your food?' and you did, than you should answer 'jo' and not 'ja'. one other function is to demonstrate that something is obvious.. so if someone tells you something and you say 'det vet jeg jo' than you're saying something like 'of course I know that'

I think u can say that Ja is the opposite of Nei (yes - no) while Jo is the opposite of Ikke (yes - not). I can see why you find it confusing.

-"Hadde han det bra?"

- "Ja, det hadde han" (Did he have a good time? Yes he did) ..and.

-"Hun hadde det ikke bra."

-"Jo, det hadde hun."

(she didnt have a good time. - Yes she did)
