The group marching in this parade just does it to get a rise out of people. They are only trying to force propaganda on those who don't agree with them. I am a catholic, but I don't go out and force my beliefs on anyone else. Most Christians do not. This group's motto is if you disagree with them, you are wrong. Attention whores who just want to stir the pot!!
@fordfan32 Christian proselytism is going rampant in this country, there's a church almost in every corner. "Thank God this... God is good, God is great..." blah blah blah!! You cannot say that's not proselytism. Remembering atheist veterans is as important as remembering Christian veterans, Muslim veterans and any other kind of veteran, except the atheist veterans are hated instead of being remembered with respect. Reason why we need more of these parades!
I'd feel sorry for you if you people werent being pricks. Both side were in the wrong if you ask me. I LIVE in Annville and if If the topic of religion pops up, people here are perfectly fine with my agnosticism... =_= Dont judge my hometown through this video, folks...
This is pretty stupid. I don't play fantasy football, doesn't mean I'm going to go to a parade and yell about how much I don't play it. They're going about it all the wrong way. "I'm going nowhere when I die!" ... >_> um unless you're a Gnostic Atheist you shouldn't say that. Even Richard Dawkins isn't a Gnostic Atheist.
@SanguineBullet667 Is there a common saying that goes "There are no non-fantasy-football players in foxholes?" No? Didn't think so. Until you've lived with the constant discrimination and contempt that atheists get just for being atheists--not for being "obnoxious"--you've no idea what you're talking about. The bigotry comes FIRST, and the response is what others perceive as someone being "obnoxious". BTW your "gnostic atheist" comment is ridiculous.
@pandurate oki can see why a kicked animal would want to stand proud in the face of it's aggressors, but you still didn't address the second part of my post
Wow, I'm from PA and I never knew about this town. Hell, I didn't even know Lebanon Valley College was there and I know a few high school classmates that go there...damn
i am an atheist veteran and i just set up a facebook page just for Pennsylvania atheists to share their believes, opinions and theories on different subjects, the site is still young but hopefully we can get more free thinkers on the site to share their experiences, join us at facebook.com/ Pennsylvaniaathiests
Interesting vid. I wonder how many religious groups had a display in the parade. Is this the way they spread their message? If yes, then I think fair is fair.
I do not get it? I am from Annville. They are some of the most lovely people in the Country. I hav been gone and serving for over 14 years. Of course I could never go back to such a small town, I do not understand what this does except make you feel self important? This is a town of 3000 people... really people?
@Landinification The atheist soldiers/veterans marching did so in memory of their fallen comrades, Yes they were important. They did feel important marching for atheists in foxholes.
I'm not sure who the "really People" question you made was directed too, the hateful citizens of Annville or the Honored Soldiers/Veterans in our group?
I'm really shocked by this video, as an English atheist I look at what goes on in America with interest, so I thought I knew how some 'fundamentalist' christians were. This parade showing 'normal' people in a town made me realise just how prevalent anti-atheist feelings are.
It's disgusting and disgraceful that veterans should have so much vitriol directed at them just because they don't believe in some invisible sky-daddy. I'd be interested to know how they'd react to muslim veterans?
Where are all these atheist veterans at? Look at me I'm a non believer. Oh by the way, did I tell u I didn't believe? Yes my purpose here at this parade for vets is to tell everyone I dont believe.
Atheism is a belief system and this is called piggybacking your "belief" on to an issue that can be potentially polarizing so that u can proselytize your belief under the veneer of patriotism. Why not just support the troops period? Why only atheist? Why not support everyone who serves?
@eperce Getting up in someones grill after they repeatedly tell u they dont want to hear your philosophy is just rude, no matter what your belief, & to try to pretend that because they dont care for your antics, that that means they are a in someway against atheist troops, is a crock, and is doing atheist in general no service. Everyone else says "support your troops" including Christian and Jewish orgs. Why cant we leave it at that, instead of using the troops for your own political purposes.
@benthemiester by showing there are atheists in foxholes we can dispel the myth that there are no atheists in foxholes. "atheists in foxholes my asshole!"
Not acknowledging atheists in foxholes is what the movement for the large part is against.
Great, I'm all for dispelling myths, but thats not what "atheist in foxhole means" It simply means that even an atheist will question his beliefs under certain life threatening conditions. This is a deeper question, & to use veterans in general to counter this point, is a little tacky at best. In order to test this theory u have to be with the atheist in question when the shit is hitting the fan, not 40 years later. I hope this also dispels the myth that only Christians kill in wars.
@eperce The very first banner I read said this below.
"Penn. Non believers, atheist, agnostic, humanist Embracing Reality" Embracing reality? Do u really think people are to dumb to get the meaning of this terminology? How about all those Christian vets that died. Were they devoid of reality?
All servicemen already get a 21 gun salute, Taps, & the same burial benefits as everyone else. If we acknowledge all vets, in spite of their personel beliefs, then we dont need caveats or qualifiers.
@benthemiester our banner said "Remembering all who bravely served, including Atheists in Foxholes". Did you see the word "all"?? Far too many patriotic events try to tie "God" into them, and leave us atheists out of the loop. We won't let that go unchallenged any longer.
@benthemiester Getting up in someone's grill (never heard that one before) after they tell you to stop... Where have I seen that done before? Oh yeah, about a billion times, when theists have rung my doorbell, shoved signs in my face, used a bullhorn on a busy street, taught religion to my kid in public school, trolled atheist web sites, etc. etc. etc. etc.
@pandurate If someone rings your bell & you tell them to leave & they dont, then they are tresspassing. Call a cop if you have that problem. I have also had many different religous people on the street ask me if they could speak to me, but no one has ever tried to force anything down my throat once I have asked them to leave, including Jehovas witnesses. I dont beleive that you have a child who has had religoun forced on them by a school since it is illegal. If so then please name the school.
@benthemiester My child goes to public school, but there have been several instances where teachers have read books with strong Christian overtones. One teacher told the class "Jesus is god's brother". Once the subject comes up, kids start talking about it. My kid was harassed at one point by "religious" children ("How can you NOT believe in Jesus?", etc.). I would love to name the school but I won't name the school my kid goes to, for obvious reasons relating to privacy.
@pandur A book with strong Christian overtones is not forcing anything on anyone. The Declaration of independance says that "we are endowed by our creator" Should we omit the delcaration of Independance from study? The 9th circuit struck down mandatory prayer in military years ago. Atheist can live freely in any predominantly Christian populated country including those that have an official state religoun yet Christians are still persecuted in some states with atheist minded goverments.
@benthemiester OK, so a book that tells impressionable children that god is watching them and that they need to love and have faith in Jesus is OK in public school? OK well I think we're done here. BTW the original draft of the DoI did not have the word "creator" in it. As always, it was kowtowing to religious tendencies that allowed such a reference to be added. You need to look up "secular" because mentioning a deity fails to meet that standard. It's been fun, adios.
@pandurate Ill tell you what. You seem like a concerned parent. Why dont you name the book. School textbooks and books that are allowed or banned from school libratries is one of my fields of interest. Please name the book and school. I'm not sure why you would want to protect any school from scrutiny. I get the impression that you are greatly exagerating your dilema. You went from acusation of Christian overtones & peer pressure to the forcing of Christian dogma and still offer no evidence.
@pandurate I think it is U who needs to understand the differnce between "state atheism" & a secular goverment, which does not mean a secular citezinship or no religoun. State athesim was adotped by a few countries in the 20th century, & in a few short years 50+ million were slaughterd for their beliefs, & more than any inquisition or crusade in history. A christian majority adopted this secular state giving rigts to all, including athesit. State athesm did not do the same for theist.
You conflate atheism with statism, many forms of which happen to be atheistic.
Those people weren't killed in the name of atheism; they were killed to further certain political ideologies, such as communism and fascism. (Better technology allowed this killing to be done more efficiently--hence the higher body counts.)
Also, bear in mind that the notion of a secular state--in particular, the separation of church and state--emerged from Enlightenment thought, not Christianity.
@pandurate Teachng that Jesus was God's brother is anything but Christian. If your child feels he is being harrased by some other kids asking him why he beleives or doesnt believe, then I suggest you toughen your kid up. He or she may have thin skin. We were taught that "sticks and stones may break our bones but words will ever hurt me". The problem is that everyone has grown soft and now everyone has to walk on eggshells. Atheist show up with bull horns at religous conventions all the time.
@pandurate The declaration of indepenadance also has theistic overtones as in "we are endowed by our creator" Should we omit the Declaration of Independance from study also? We live in a secular state, not an atheist state. Atheist can live freely in any Christian populated country including countries that have an official state religoun yet Christians are still persecuted till this day in some countries that have a tendency torward a type of state atheism.
No, atheism is simply the lack of belief in any of the many theistic gods that people have believed in. I don't believe in the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, or leprechauns either. I don't have belief systems concerning these things, I simply don't have any belief in them. If I'm presented with convincing empirical evidence of the existence of any of these things, then I will adopt belief systems about them.
@ndrthrdr1 You can only speak for yourself and not all atheist. There is a growing number of atheist who just do not believe in God, but believe that there is no God. Why do you label yourself as something you dont believe? I don't believe in leprechauns or Bigfoot either, but I dont label myself as an Aleperchauinst or an Abigfootist.
A large percentage of new age believers and Wiccans are atheist, and they believe in all sorts of strange things. Buddhist are also atheist.
@dogon3 "I am a freethinker and I have no beliefs in the unknown and unprovable, therefore I am atheist as well"
Everyone is free to think. You are not exclusive to free thought.
Abiogenesis/ how life started is completely unknown. Do you therefore doubt that living things had a beginning? There is no way to scientifically quantify whether your mother, wife or kids actually love you. Do you believe that they do? because if you dont, then your prone to a very lonely life.
@benthemiester 1.Freethought: See Wikipedia on the subject. 2.Methods of forming scientific theory don't allow to explain something by some even some greater unknown. Occam's Razor. 3.Yet, we can have emotions without their cause being accurately assessed.
@dogon3 Occam's Razor. 3.Yet, we can have emotions without their cause being accurately assessed?
Occams razor can be a very subjective concept based on ones personel subjective view of what the best explanation is, and having emotion without cause being accurately accessed wasn't the question. The question was believing something to be true without being able to scientifically quantify this belief.
@dogon3 "I am a freethinker and I have no beliefs in the unknown and unprovable, therefore I am atheist as well"

@dogon3 "I am a freethinker and I have no beliefs in the unknown and unprovable, therefore I am atheist as well"
Atheism only means that you dont believe in a deity or that you may be an anti theist. It doesn't mean anything else concerning unknowns. In fact many atheist are involved the new age metaphysics like astro projection transcendental mediation, astrology, fortune telling, crystal balls, psychic readings, esp, parapsychology and even Buddism etc.
@benthemiester I have been in contact with Atheist, Freethought, Skeptic groups for over 20 years. I have only met 3 who had any belief in the paranormal. If they come to atheism through reason, they rarely do have such beliefs. But you make a good point that there are many more atheists than are involved in any explicitly "atheist" group. However, having no beliefs in the unknown or unprovable leads most often to atheism.
@dogon3 I have only met 3 who had any belief in the paranormal.
U met 3 people who admitted that they believe in the paranormal but have u done a survey such as the one posted in the Wall street journal? You can give atheism any title you want, but free thought is not exclusive to atheism. Anthony Flew was a champion of atheism for decades but when used his same free thought to denounce atheism many who professes to believe in free thought turned on him & overnight he became a senile old man.
@ndrthrdr1 "If I'm presented with convincing empirical evidence of the existence of any of these things, then I will adopt belief systems about them"
I think the fact that there is now broad agreement among cosmologist that the universe is fine tuned for life is compelling evidence for a creator. Rodger Penrose has calculated the probability of the universe coming together by chance within these fine tuned ratios at 1: 10^10^123 in contrast there are only 1: 10^80 electrons in the universe.
@benthemiester The fact that life has evolved here instead of Mars or countless other planets is because this is where the conditions are favorable for it. What would indicate some miraculous force at work would be if life had evolved on the sun, the moon, Mercury, Pluto, or in literally billions of billions of other places with similarly hostile environments.
@ndrthrdr1 Finely tuned for life would mean that there would be life all over the place, but It seems (so far) to be horribly tuned for life, since life seems to have no chance at all to originate and survive in the vast majority of locations in this vast universe.
@ndrthrdr1 Primordial living cell to man macro evolution is no more a fact than spontaneous generation is or was a fact. The modern synthesis is a theory and is no longer considered a very strong one by growing body of scientist, and one which is falling apart at the seems as we speak. This is also a field of great interest to me, and has been for many years. No one denies evolution as change, variation & adaption, however bacteria to man evolution is extrapolated but is not empirical.
"Finely tuned for life would mean that there would be life all over the place"
Thats not what fine tuning means. No one has been able to offer a reasonable explanation for fine tuning. It seems as time goes by, the more we find just how special life is, as well as the planet we live on. Research the fine tuning argument yourself. The discovery of this principle was not invented by theologians, although it is consistent with theology. Then watch the Privileged Planet with an open mind.
@ndrthrdr1 "The fact that life has evolved here etc"
That has nothing to do with whats referred to as the fine tuning problem, & which is only a problem for atheist. What your speaking of is called the "Rare Earth principle" or "godilocks planet" which is another compelling argument if your familiar with the details. Theres a great production called the Privileged Planet if your interested in learning more. Without an exponentially fine tuned universe life itself would not exist anywhere.
@benthemiester Clearly you have no idea how much shit atheists get, even in the military. JUST LOOK AT THE VIDEO! What you need to realize is that THIS IS WHY IT IS NECESSARY to "come out" as an atheist! The contempt for atheists is wrong, inside and out, and people need to get used to the idea that we're out here, so they can get over it. How nice for you that you've never suffered bigotry!
@pandurate Please tell me how much shit athethist get in the military. Where are all these cases? There have been a lot of times I could have played the race card because of my Latin heritage but I never did because I'm not a pussy.
@benthemiester It's not hard finding information on discrimination against atheists in the military. Forced prayer, for one thing. The group "Atheists in Foxholes" exists for a reason. If you ever experienced discrimination based on your race, doing something about it doesn't make you a "pussy", but not doing something about it makes you part of the problem.
I don't know where I stand on this. I am an atheist, but why would you be an advert for any religion at a veterans day parade? Just enjoy the fact you're a veteran, I would not think it was good to advertise you are an atheist, but the same with a christian, muslim etc.
People have been ridiculed, even killed for their views or beliefs. Religion or not. We are all the same. The hatred for opposing beliefs shown here doesn't prove either side right. All were wrong in how they behaved. This is how wars begin. Each of us has a right to our opinions & beliefs. It is fine to discuss it like adults as long we don't escalate the the tension. We are all humans. Brothers all. Accept others views as just that, theirs.Views change with experience
Proof - The Real Garden of Eden is found. See my channel for the video. Share it with others. The atheists don't want you to see it, that's why they've blocked me from showing them. Watch it and then tell someone!
I'm an atheist but the people marching here are being horribly immature. They're doing nothing but increasing anti-atheist sentiment and making the onlookers feel uncomfortable.
That is not Christ-like for Christians to degrade others because of their religion! I can't believe they are doing this...this is NOT what Christianity is about! I'm Christian and this is a horrible testimony to others when they hear things like "Christians are good" "Christians go to heaven"...wow what a slap in the face for them...so corrupt...no wonder they think religion is so wacky.
@OceanandRic Since when are Christians supposed to be perfect? We are sinners just like you. Oh right, Atheists can't sin. How convenient.I should say, everyone transgresses against others, even Atheists. If we were perfect we wouldn't need the forgiveness of God.We are human just like you.We just know how imperfect we are.To be a Christian is far from easy.We get ridiculed all the time.Killed even. Sinless Jesus was killed because of our sins.Atheist were forgive too they just don't know it yet.
It makes me sick how hateful people can be. I'm pagan (and a veteran) and I would support you guys. I'm not raising my son with any particular beliefs (my husband is also a veteran and an atheist), but when my son is old enough, he can decide for himself. I knew people of ALL beliefs in the military, and they were all good people and my friends (Christians, Satanists, pagans, muslims, the list goes on). I'm sure there are groups for Christian soldiers, Atheists have every right to a group too.
@B0thergirl We didn't have any "atheist flyers". We gave out bumper stickers that said "Humankind: Be Both". That was the extent of our propaganda. The fact that they rejected even that spoke volumes. We were lepers in their eyes.
-------------
So they rejected your bumper stickers, big whoop. I've rejected propaganda and other things folks were giving out for free. There is nothing wrong about that.
It isn't nice that they said the things they did and there is no excuse for it. That's all.
I'm 100% with the PAN group, but I know what I write next is going to get me slammed: I'm against glorifying war by having a generally upbeat celebration of it. I understand that the soldiers in war make great sacrifices, but war itself is what caused those sacrifices, and war is definately not something that American kids should aspire to. Anyway, the bravery of these nonbelievers motivated me to state my position on that issue, and I thank them for it.
The problem is not religion, but how far people are willing to take religion, and the intolerance of it all. It's not a fight between Christians and Atheists, but a fight between extremists, and there is plenty in the video and plenty in these comments. On both sides.
Lol, and these Christians say they're tolerant, loving people. According to this video it's quite the opposite, the only tolerant, loving people are ATHEISTS.
I don't need a response. I believe in the right of all people to have their own beliefs. The A.I.F. supporters equated the folks who did not want to have a belief shoved at them at a non-religious parade with a hatred towards the non believing soldier. Why bring religion into it? Unless you are exploiting the soldiers to push your agenda.
@B0thergirl It is not obvious from this video, but the parade was full of religious groups with their beliefs on full display. There was this one small group of nonbelievers. Not sure how they are the ones guilty of "bringing religion into it".
@HpyVlyMoss Any examples? I would like to know, since then it is entirely true that religious groups have made the parade into an advertisement for their beliefs. As well, the Atheists then have a leg to stand on in encouraging support for nonbeliever troops.
@dogon3 St. Paul the Apostle Church had a float that I remember. The Annville-Cleona Religious Education Association was marching. There were others I can't remember. Plus innumerable "God Bless America" signs and crosses.
@dogon3 St. Paul the Apostle Church had a float. The Annville-Cleona Religious Education Association was marching. There were others that I can't remember. Plus innumerable "God Bless America" signs and crosses on display.
@B0thergirl tell that to the people on the "Religious Education" (bible release time) float, or the float of the church with the big cross and that last year had a faux military cemetery float, covered exclusively with Cross grave markers. Xians love to propagate the "No Atheists in Foxholes" myth. We won't let them get away with that any longer. And we will continue to promote our message at all patriotic and quasi-patriotic events.
@satanshimself I made myself clear. I don't like any religious views forced on me at any parade. If Non-believers just walked down the street with their signs w/o goading the observers saying that those who didn't take a flyer, hated the Atheist soldiers it would have been fine. That goes for all religious belief parade participants. The man in the A.I.F. group was illogical to equate people who rejected the pushing of the Atheist religion,(belief system), as hating the atheist soldiers.
@B0thergirl We didn't have any "atheist flyers". We gave out bumper stickers that said "Humankind: Be Both". That was the extent of our propaganda. The fact that they rejected even that spoke volumes. We were lepers in their eyes.
How confused are the A.I F.? Why define a soldier by his beliefs? Yes, atheism is a religion. Religion: a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance. When at a parade I don't want anyone forcing their beliefs on me. Why can't they just be happy that we support all our troops? What about the guy saying the child was too young to believe in anything yet he makes him hold and atheist license plate up at the end. The man is not better than the people he mocks.
@B0thergirl Wth is "AIF"? Atheists in...???? I would guess? In order for me to answer this Unclear post I need to know what the acronym stands for. There isn't anyone in this video I mocked. I recommend u go back watch video &see if I mock anyone during the parade, when they say yhey will pray for me i respond with kind thank you's. You Pdon't understand mocking christians. There isnt a person on youtube who outmocks christians like i do. I also edited subtitles were done after the event.
Are you seriously characterising these people as "forcing their beliefs on me."?
If the Christian asshats didn't actually deny the existence of Atheist soldiers then maybe they wouldn't need to proclaim their existence. "No atheists in foxholes." I don't even need to ask if you've heard that one before.
"The man is not better than the people he mocks." - Only an ass would suggest that proclaiming you exist is mocking someone.
Who in that group was denying that Atheist soldier don't exist? I didn't hear anyone say there is no such thing as an Atheist soldier. To call anyone an As*hat because of their beliefs makes you no better then the hecklers at the parade. If you want acceptance you also must accept others as they are.
Matthew 10:34 "Don't think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace. I came to bring a sword.
"There are no atheists in foxholes." An all too common view. If that is not a fundamental denial then I don't know what is. These people are marching specifically to address this notion. The name of the organisation is a hint "Atheists In Foxholes". They want Christians to recognise that some soldiers are atheists and still entitled to their support.
Should acceptence of others' beliefs stretch to racists, holocaust deniers, etc. Some beliefs DO make you an asshat.
Do you mean to tell me you are all amped up because of a stupid comment some people make? Really? Do you understand what those who say it mean? When faced with death you will always rely on those things you hold dear to see you through. For some it is family.
How do you think God believing people of all faiths feel when they are persecuted and killed because other people hate their beliefs?
You must love how Hitler treated the Jews and Christians.
Are you honestly pretending not to notice how atheists are treated in the states by Christians?
Ok, you have just leapt off the deep end entirely. Equating genocide with calling someone an asshat. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were trying to make a point (one which eludes me) rather than the apparent suggestion that I was a fan of Hitlers treatment of the Jews.
Incidentally, are under the gross misconception that Hitler did something to Christians?
@TheCelticChimp You obviously don't know your history. Many Christians were killed by Hitler and they were also in the camps for their support of the Jewish people. Read Bonhoeffer.
Bonhoeffer, Dietrich (1906–45), German Lutheran theologian and pastor. He was an active opponent of Nazism and was involved in the German resistance movement. Arrested in 1943, he was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp and later executed.
I don't know my history. Ironygasm. If you think Hitler persecuted Christians you have shown yourself to be utterly uneducated in the History you suggest I don't know. An anti-nazi is executed (he is Christian, like Hitler and all of his army) and you think he was executed because of his Christianity. Thats a fine persecution complex you have nurtured there. Why bother with reality when fantasy, and I strongly suspect at this point fundie Christian propaganda, are so much more fun!
I didn't class it. The dictionary did. Get your head out of the sand. I don't know how old you are but you sound about 18-19yrs. old. Why don't you look things up for yourself.
This is my last response. Like you I have the right to my opinion. Or are you like religious zelots trying to convert me?
religion noun (The 4th definition)
• a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance : consumerism is the new religion.
You need a new dictionary or some instruction on how to read the one you have. A usage like
"consumerism is the new religion" is an associative use. When someone says "I was petrified" I assume you don't think they meant they were turned to stone. Anyone seriously suggesting that atheism is a religion is clueless.
I have even suggested you should become an atheist? Convert you? Get over yourself. You made some silly comments, I responded. I couldn't care less what you believe.
Why should I become an Atheist? I believe in God and I love atheists and others. I may not like what other people like or believe in what they believe. I don't love them only if they agree with me. I don't judge Atheist's like you are judging me for my belief. You sound so full of hatred. Look beyond personal beliefs.
You seem very vocal in you faithlessness. You seem to want to convert me. you are no better than the Christians at the parade yelling hatred at the Atheists.
Are you even reading my comments? Didn't I just say I don't care what you believe. I really don't.
I haven't passed any Judgement on you. I didn't even know when I responded to you first what religion, if any, you held. Vocal in my faithlessness....wtf? I haven't even commented on faith or lack of it. I was talking about the treatment one group gets by another.......oh here whats the point. You are clearly neither educated nor particular skilled at reading. Why waste more words?
Sorry if you don't like the New Oxford dictionary. You just have so much hatred there is no speaking logic or truth to you. I've spent enough time around your issues. I wish the best to you.
@TheCelticChimp You said, "Presumably, by your reasoning, members of a gay pride parade are religious. The religion of being gay." Yes it is. And if you are atheist then you are god unto yourself. Whatever your driving interest in your life is would be your religion. It just means it is a practice.
@B0thergirl Your definition of religion is not correct, and atheism is not a religion. Also, these people aren't forcing their beliefs on anyone. They're not saying "we're atheists, you need to be one too," they're saying "we're atheists," and that's it. You're trying to scold the wrong folks in this whole debacle.
@DantehMan I am correct. Look it up in the dictionary. This is not opinion. Anything you practice or believe can be a "religion". You have to have faith or conviction to believe there is no God. You label yourself an Atheist. That is a proclamation that you believe or have faith in you conviction, that there is no God. Not believing in God is a Religion as much as believing there is one. Example: "He religiously keeps his car in tip top condition." " I brush my teeth religiously. "
I am a life-long, dyed-in-the-wool atheist, but I totally disagree with your choice of venues to push your agenda. It simply reinforces the notion that "atheists=assholes."
@frotobare So Christians should say what they want and atheists should be a silent minority? The bigotry is most generally one sided, I am all for an civil exchange of ideas and beliefs but very much against the bigotry.
For what we know for certain we are all here and we will all die how we get along in the interim is relevant and bigotry and prejudice only compounds intolerance and hate.
@frotobare Thanks for the attempt at being civil. It has everything to do with them being atheist in the military, and the bigotry from believers. A they are atheist B they are military. C. There is bigotry from believers, because of their atheism. Its part of who they are.
If it where not for the bigotry of those who spew it, there would be no reason for a non-believers support group in the military. If you seen the bigotry from the outside it would be obvious to you.
@frotobare Its part of who they are, man you're thick and you say I'm a retard.
Its like saying they hate X about you but not Y but they won't acknowledge Y because of X its very simple logic yet you say I'm the one with mental issues. You keep lashing out with ad hominems only strengthens the idea you're arguing from a weak position.
Try an exchange without using ad hominems someday you may realize its counter productive. Be polite and try asking instead of making assumptions.
Only through Jesus Christ will you find life. There is no other way. Hope and purpose comes from Him. Don't waste your life away without knowing how amazing God is. Repent and turn to Him. Jesus loves you.
@717ukPaul No, Jesus doesn't love me. No one who would threaten me with unspeakable torture for eternity simply for not believing in his divinity is a loving person. Jesus, if he exists/existed is/was the greatest terrorist of all time. Hitler was nicer.
@satanshimself We have all sinned right? We all have had many disgusting thoughts etc. If you take all them then do you think that you deserve to live with God for eternity in paradise. God is Holy and perfect. Jesus became sin and a curse on the cross so that we could be made righteous and have all our sins washed away. To have eternity with Him in paradise. You are going to reject this? Let it not be. Turn to Him and be set free. Don't throw it all away.
@717ukPaul Why are Christians so greedy for life? Why isn't one life enough for you? The whole concept of vicarious redemption is one of the most dangerous philosophies ever espoused. We must end that myth.
@717ukPaul The babies and young people aren't the greedy ones. They usually aren't the ones pushing Jebus on the rest of us. It's the older farts who are the greedy ones.
@satanshimself If there was only one life then I would settle for that. But there is another life. This short life is over in a flash. Come as you are to Jesus. I am not talking about catholic faith and all that. The real Jesus Christ. He is wonderful and the joy He gives you is unlike anything else. True joy.
@satanshimself He loves you so much that you have absolutely no idea. He can't be near sin. (Heaven allows no sin which is WHY you don't end up in heaven if you choose to reject Him.) He never forces anyone to do anything. It's their choice. He wants you to accept Him for who He is and let Him be a part of your life so you can live to your full potential. He made you. He gave you your personality. He put you on earth for a reason. When you die, His reward for you is eternity in heaven.
@OceanandRic ...and what is your evidence of this, other than an old discredited book cobbled together decades after the purported events? I want current, verifiable evidence. I'm waiting.
@satanshimself Look around you and observe the beauty of His creation (refering to nature, not stuff like cities lol). If you'd notice, things in nature piece together perfectly. The more people study things of nature-- to find out more to prove the theory that there is no God and that we all evolved, they just dive deeper and deeper into more complexity. They come to notice that such complexity really lessens the chance of an "accident" in which life evolved from. (continuing comment)
@satanshimself The only reason I know that God is real is from the Bible and my own faith. Just because you can't see something doesnt mean its not there. God is love. You can't see love, hear love or touch love. Does that mean love doesnt exist? Scientists are trying to find the "God particle" (substance giving mass to objects). After months of having an atom splitter search for it, they found nothing. Proof more and more that a loving Spirit is out there watching over us.
@OceanandRic Yep, and that impotent loving spirit watched as 10's of thousands died from a tsunami that said loving spirit created and could have stopped. Some "loving spirit"! But thanks for admitting that the "only" reason that you "know" God is real is from a pornographic, violent text written by a bunch of goat-herding desert dwellers. Yep, that's exactly what a bright person should base their existence upon.
@satanshimself He doesn't make the world milk and cookies. Sometimes, as a father punishes his children, so does God with His people. The Bible is true. In Revelations, it talks about a prophecy thats coming true. It says everyone will be wearing these "markings" in their right hands or forehead. One of the markings will read as 666 (the antichrist). I read in a history book that scientists are making these microchips and can go in the right hand or forehead. These chips replace credit cards.
saw this link started at AlterNet.com, through the 'friendly atheist'. you guys rock.
don't believe "the i'm an atheist but..." or "i don't have a problem with atheists but...", or anyone who claims to have been an atheist but.... i've run into these people all over the place, it's a rouse, they're propagating like they always do. it's just another ploy to demonize atheists as evil.
i imagine that if it were gay veterans marching for support, the crowd would be similarly frigid. meanwhile, the comments here would be like "i tolerate gays as long as they don't act gay or anything" and "why'd you have to ruin memorial day by highlighting your gayness? i mean we support veterans, just as long as there's no visible indication that they're gay (pending implementation of new policy repealing don't ask, don't tell)."
@musicbackfromthedead That's exactly what happened in last year's Annville parade when @eperce chanted within the atheist marching unit, "Support our gay and lesbian troops. You know it's the right thing to do." There was a lot of hate (and a fair amount of support too), and some letters later saying that bringing up the GLBT issue was a bad thing to do because CHILLLLLDRUN were present.
@frotobare I told you 4 times that's not the point. Why do you support the bigotry and hate spewed out by these bigots for your fellow soldiers, and you won't support them? Is it because they(PAN) don't adhere to your brand of whatever imaginary friend myth you been brainwashed to believe? Is it you're just a troll? Thats the way I see it otherwise you would have been more civil to begin with, which will contribute far more to a intelligent exchange of ideas than starting out like a complete ass
@frotobare They are vets, so if they don't think it's mute, stands to reason it's not. And I seriously doubt it's directed at their fellow servicepeople. it's the spectators that don't know that say stupid things like there's no atheists in foxholes. Being told one doesn't exist tends not to be mute to a person. Further, atheists may not get grief from fellow soldiers but they sure do from superiors and the military. .
Telling a kid to burn into a hole into the ground? Ha! So loving and morally just. What a joke! This is the reason I became a non-believer, because believers are nothing but idiotic, and hateful hypocrites.
@frotobare It really doesn't surprise me you bring nothing to the conversation but ad hominens generally typical of a weak argument. I personally could care less who would be fighting beside me as well unless that person decided in the heat of the shit they needed to talk to an imaginary friend and not contribute. That isn't even the point the point is how intolerant arrogant bigots throughout Christians can be as well as you. Bigotry has always persisted in Christianity should that not change?
@frotobare I'm not chief I'm pointing out the blatant disrespect and intolerance that's spewed out from bigots like those in the video and yourself. I'm not pushing my atheism I'm pointing those who have little to no tolerance for any beliefs that don't not correspond with their version of whatever religion they subscribe to. I'm sure if their where Muslims, Jews or any other religion including other secs of Christianity the intolerance may be equal to, but possibly less open.
@frotobare Okay genius don't try to refute any of this simpletons arguments or answer any of my elementary level questions you're intelligence is way out of my league. Have fun at Mensa, a group in which most likely a believer would be a minority.
@frotobare "bigotry is exactly what the atheist are showing by doing this." How exactly? Asking for support of the troops in the minority group they represent or is it because the hatred shown from those they are asking support of?
Damn bigots wanting some recognition how dare they. There may be bias on both sides but the majority of the weight of it is from the protesters, as well as most of the intolerance.
In the dark ages, we didn't need words like "bigot" "racist" "sexist" etc because the word "christian" covered all of the above. Have things changed or do we just have many more words to describe the same thing? Jesus is the ugliest monster man has ever created.
Love the video! I really enjoy the "Christian Love" that so many of the commenters here have expressed. They exemplify the mindset that holds us back from competing in a world that requires critical thinking.
"all atheists are infected with rabies" ??? They're so stupid it hurts.
Here's a question... What would it sound like if all those people were speaking out against black soliders? Thankfully we've progressed to the point where that would be considered inappropriate. Hopefully bigotry against atheists will someday look just as inappropriate to our culture. Where's the Martin Luther King of Atheism?
12:36 I just absolutely LOVE this picture. SO CUTE! :D
Just out of curiosity, what if your child came up to you one day and told you that he was a believer?

SanguineBullet667 2 months ago
@SanguineBullet667 Is there a common saying that goes "There are no non-fantasy-football players in foxholes?" No? Didn't think so. Until you've lived with the constant discrimination and contempt that atheists get just for being atheists--not for being "obnoxious"--you've no idea what you're talking about. The bigotry comes FIRST, and the response is what others perceive as someone being "obnoxious". BTW your "gnostic atheist" comment is ridiculous.

Why not support everyone who serves?
benthemiester 7 months ago
@benthemiester obviously because you will not see the hatred that some show other veterans. We showed no hate toward any group or individuals.
eperce 7 months ago 5
@eperce Getting up in someones grill after they repeatedly tell u they dont want to hear your philosophy is just rude, no matter what your belief, & to try to pretend that because they dont care for your antics, that that means they are a in someway against atheist troops, is a crock, and is doing atheist in general no service. Everyone else says "support your troops" including Christian and Jewish orgs. Why cant we leave it at that, instead of using the troops for your own political purposes.
benthemiester 7 months ago
@benthemiester by showing there are atheists in foxholes we can dispel the myth that there are no atheists in foxholes. "atheists in foxholes my asshole!"
Not acknowledging atheists in foxholes is what the movement for the large part is against.
eperce 7 months ago 7
@eperce
I hope this also dispels the myth that only Christians kill in wars.
benthemiester 7 months ago
@eperce The very first banner I read said this below.
"Penn. Non believers, atheist, agnostic, humanist Embracing Reality" Embracing reality? Do u really think people are to dumb to get the meaning of this terminology? How about all those Christian vets that died. Were they devoid of reality?
All servicemen already get a 21 gun salute, Taps, & the same burial benefits as everyone else. If we acknowledge all vets, in spite of their personel beliefs, then we dont need caveats or qualifiers.
benthemiester 7 months ago
@benthemiester our banner said "Remembering all who bravely served, including Atheists in Foxholes". Did you see the word "all"?? Far too many patriotic events try to tie "God" into them, and leave us atheists out of the loop. We won't let that go unchallenged any longer.

@benthemiester Getting up in someone's grill (never heard that one before) after they tell you to stop... Where have I seen that done before? Oh yeah, about a billion times, when theists have rung my doorbell, shoved signs in my face, used a bullhorn on a busy street, taught religion to my kid in public school, trolled atheist web sites, etc. etc. etc. etc.
pandurate 2 months ago
@pandurate If someone rings your bell & you tell them to leave & they dont, then they are tresspassing. Call a cop if you have that problem. I have also had many different religous people on the street ask me if they could speak to me, but no one has ever tried to force anything down my throat once I have asked them to leave, including Jehovas witnesses. I dont beleive that you have a child who has had religoun forced on them by a school since it is illegal. If so then please name the school.
benthemiester 2 months ago
@benthemiester My child goes to public school, but there have been several instances where teachers have read books with strong Christian overtones. One teacher told the class "Jesus is god's brother". Once the subject comes up, kids start talking about it. My kid was harassed at one point by "religious" children ("How can you NOT believe in Jesus?", etc.). I would love to name the school but I won't name the school my kid goes to, for obvious reasons relating to privacy.
pandurate 2 months ago
@pandur A book with strong Christian overtones is not forcing anything on anyone. The Declaration of independance says that "we are endowed by our creator" Should we omit the delcaration of Independance from study? The 9th circuit struck down mandatory prayer in military years ago. Atheist can live freely in any predominantly Christian populated country including those that have an official state religoun yet Christians are still persecuted in some states with atheist minded goverments.
benthemiester 2 months ago
@benthemiester OK, so a book that tells impressionable children that god is watching them and that they need to love and have faith in Jesus is OK in public school? OK well I think we're done here. BTW the original draft of the DoI did not have the word "creator" in it. As always, it was kowtowing to religious tendencies that allowed such a reference to be added. You need to look up "secular" because mentioning a deity fails to meet that standard. It's been fun, adios.
pandurate 2 months ago
@pandurate Ill tell you what. You seem like a concerned parent. Why dont you name the book. School textbooks and books that are allowed or banned from school libratries is one of my fields of interest. Please name the book and school. I'm not sure why you would want to protect any school from scrutiny. I get the impression that you are greatly exagerating your dilema. You went from acusation of Christian overtones & peer pressure to the forcing of Christian dogma and still offer no evidence.
benthemiester 2 months ago
@pandurate I think it is U who needs to understand the differnce between "state atheism" & a secular goverment, which does not mean a secular citezinship or no religoun. State athesim was adotped by a few countries in the 20th century, & in a few short years 50+ million were slaughterd for their beliefs, & more than any inquisition or crusade in history. A christian majority adopted this secular state giving rigts to all, including athesit. State athesm did not do the same for theist.
benthemiester 2 months ago
@benthemiester
ClumsyRoot 2 months ago
@pandurate Teachng that Jesus was God's brother is anything but Christian. If your child feels he is being harrased by some other kids asking him why he beleives or doesnt believe, then I suggest you toughen your kid up. He or she may have thin skin. We were taught that "sticks and stones may break our bones but words will ever hurt me". The problem is that everyone has grown soft and now everyone has to walk on eggshells. Atheist show up with bull horns at religous conventions all the time.
benthemiester 2 months ago
@pandurate The declaration of indepenadance also has theistic overtones as in "we are endowed by our creator" Should we omit the Declaration of Independance from study also? We live in a secular state, not an atheist state. Atheist can live freely in any Christian populated country including countries that have an official state religoun yet Christians are still persecuted till this day in some countries that have a tendency torward a type of state atheism.

@benthemiester "Atheism is a belief system ".
No, atheism is simply the lack of belief in any of the many theistic gods that people have believed in. I don't believe in the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, or leprechauns either. I don't have belief systems concerning these things, I simply don't have any belief in them. If I'm presented with convincing empirical evidence of the existence of any of these things, then I will adopt belief systems about them.
ndrthrdr1 7 months ago
@ndrthrdr1 You can only speak for yourself and not all atheist. There is a growing number of atheist who just do not believe in God, but believe that there is no God. Why do you label yourself as something you dont believe? I don't believe in leprechauns or Bigfoot either, but I dont label myself as an Aleperchauinst or an Abigfootist.
A large percentage of new age believers and Wiccans are atheist, and they believe in all sorts of strange things. Buddhist are also atheist.

Abiogenesis/ how life started is completely unknown. Do you therefore doubt that living things had a beginning? There is no way to scientifically quantify whether your mother, wife or kids actually love you. Do you believe that they do? because if you dont, then your prone to a very lonely life.

However, having no beliefs in the unknown or unprovable leads most often to atheism.
dogon3 5 months ago

Rodger Penrose has calculated the probability of the universe coming together by chance within these fine tuned ratios at 1: 10^10^123 in contrast there are only 1: 10^80 electrons in the universe.
benthemiester 7 months ago
@benthemiester The fact that life has evolved here instead of Mars or countless other planets is because this is where the conditions are favorable for it. What would indicate some miraculous force at work would be if life had evolved on the sun, the moon, Mercury, Pluto, or in literally billions of billions of other places with similarly hostile environments.
ndrthrdr1 7 months ago
@ndrthrdr1 Finely tuned for life would mean that there would be life all over the place, but It seems (so far) to be horribly tuned for life, since life seems to have no chance at all to originate and survive in the vast majority of locations in this vast universe.
ndrthrdr1 7 months ago
@ndrthrdr1 Primordial living cell to man macro evolution is no more a fact than spontaneous generation is or was a fact. The modern synthesis is a theory and is no longer considered a very strong one by growing body of scientist, and one which is falling apart at the seems as we speak. This is also a field of great interest to me, and has been for many years. No one denies evolution as change, variation & adaption, however bacteria to man evolution is extrapolated but is not empirical.
benthemiester 7 months ago
"Finely tuned for life would mean that there would be life all over the place"
Thats not what fine tuning means. No one has been able to offer a reasonable explanation for fine tuning. It seems as time goes by, the more we find just how special life is, as well as the planet we live on. Research the fine tuning argument yourself. The discovery of this principle was not invented by theologians, although it is consistent with theology. Then watch the Privileged Planet with an open mind.
benthemiester 7 months ago
@ndrthrdr1 "The fact that life has evolved here etc"
That has nothing to do with whats referred to as the fine tuning problem, & which is only a problem for atheist. What your speaking of is called the "Rare Earth principle" or "godilocks planet" which is another compelling argument if your familiar with the details. Theres a great production called the Privileged Planet if your interested in learning more. Without an exponentially fine tuned universe life itself would not exist anywhere.

That is jsut disgusting...I can't even believe those people would say things like that to you guys! Only because you were expressing your beliefs!

Anyway, the bravery of these nonbelievers motivated me to state my position on that issue, and I thank them for it.
jerico641 8 months ago
@jerico641 The underlying cause of war is the hate and intolerance projected by assholes. You should understand that better than anyone.
RadarGuidedVermin 8 months ago
The problem is not religion, but how far people are willing to take religion, and the intolerance of it all. It's not a fight between Christians and Atheists, but a fight between extremists, and there is plenty in the video and plenty in these comments. On both sides.

AIF=Athiests In Foxholes supporters
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl It is not obvious from this video, but the parade was full of religious groups with their beliefs on full display. There was this one small group of nonbelievers. Not sure how they are the ones guilty of "bringing religion into it".

@HpyVlyMoss You're right, thanks for the comment!

@HpyVlyMoss Any examples? I would like to know, since then it is entirely true that religious groups have made the parade into an advertisement for their beliefs. As well, the Atheists then have a leg to stand on in encouraging support for nonbeliever troops.

And we will continue to promote our message at all patriotic and quasi-patriotic events.
satanshimself 8 months ago
@satanshimself I made myself clear. I don't like any religious views forced on me at any parade. If Non-believers just walked down the street with their signs w/o goading the observers saying that those who didn't take a flyer, hated the Atheist soldiers it would have been fine. That goes for all religious belief parade participants. The man in the A.I.F. group was illogical to equate people who rejected the pushing of the Atheist religion,(belief system), as hating the atheist soldiers.

Cool, you just redefined a word to suit yourself!
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@TheCelticChimp
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@TheCelticChimp
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@TheCelticChimp You obviously don't know your history. Many Christians were killed by Hitler and they were also in the camps for their support of the Jewish people. Read Bonhoeffer.
Bonhoeffer, Dietrich (1906–45), German Lutheran theologian and pastor. He was an active opponent of Nazism and was involved in the German resistance movement. Arrested in 1943, he was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp and later executed.
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@B0thergirl
I can't believe that you try to class Atheism as a religion. By your definition Martin Luther King wasn't a Christian he was an EqualRightsian.
Holding something to be important doen not make it a religion. It is a crass attempt to open it up to a particular kind of criticism.
Presumably, by your reasoning, members of a gay pride parade are religious. The religion of being gay.
They are protesting the fact that only some troops are supported, the Christian ones.
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@TheCelticChimp
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl
TheCelticChimp 8 months ago
@TheCelticChimp
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl

I have no issue with the dictionary, just your inability to understand it.

@TheCelticChimp You said, "Presumably, by your reasoning, members of a gay pride parade are religious. The religion of being gay." Yes it is. And if you are atheist then you are god unto yourself. Whatever your driving interest in your life is would be your religion. It just means it is a practice.
B0thergirl 8 months ago
@B0thergirl Your definition of religion is not correct, and atheism is not a religion. Also, these people aren't forcing their beliefs on anyone. They're not saying "we're atheists, you need to be one too," they're saying "we're atheists," and that's it. You're trying to scold the wrong folks in this whole debacle.
DantehMan 7 months ago
@DantehMan I am correct. Look it up in the dictionary. This is not opinion. Anything you practice or believe can be a "religion". You have to have faith or conviction to believe there is no God. You label yourself an Atheist. That is a proclamation that you believe or have faith in you conviction, that there is no God. Not believing in God is a Religion as much as believing there is one. Example: "He religiously keeps his car in tip top condition." " I brush my teeth religiously. "

For what we know for certain we are all here and we will all die how we get along in the interim is relevant and bigotry and prejudice only compounds intolerance and hate.
robvlob 8 months ago
@frotobare Thanks for the attempt at being civil. It has everything to do with them being atheist in the military, and the bigotry from believers. A they are atheist B they are military. C. There is bigotry from believers, because of their atheism. Its part of who they are.
If it where not for the bigotry of those who spew it, there would be no reason for a non-believers support group in the military. If you seen the bigotry from the outside it would be obvious to you.
robvlob 8 months ago
@frotobare Its part of who they are, man you're thick and you say I'm a retard.

satanshimself 8 months ago
@satanshimself We have all sinned right? We all have had many disgusting thoughts etc. If you take all them then do you think that you deserve to live with God for eternity in paradise. God is Holy and perfect. Jesus became sin and a curse on the cross so that we could be made righteous and have all our sins washed away. To have eternity with Him in paradise. You are going to reject this? Let it not be. Turn to Him and be set free. Don't throw it all away.

He never forces anyone to do anything.

I'm waiting.
satanshimself 8 months ago
@satanshimself Look around you and observe the beauty of His creation (refering to nature, not stuff like cities lol). If you'd notice, things in nature piece together perfectly. The more people study things of nature-- to find out more to prove the theory that there is no God and that we all evolved, they just dive deeper and deeper into more complexity. They come to notice that such complexity really lessens the chance of an "accident" in which life evolved from. (continuing comment)
OceanandRic 8 months ago
@satanshimself The only reason I know that God is real is from the Bible and my own faith. Just because you can't see something doesnt mean its not there. God is love. You can't see love, hear love or touch love. Does that mean love doesnt exist? Scientists are trying to find the "God particle" (substance giving mass to objects). After months of having an atom splitter search for it, they found nothing. Proof more and more that a loving Spirit is out there watching over us.
OceanandRic 8 months ago
@OceanandRic Yep, and that impotent loving spirit watched as 10's of thousands died from a tsunami that said loving spirit created and could have stopped. Some "loving spirit"! But thanks for admitting that the "only" reason that you "know" God is real is from a pornographic, violent text written by a bunch of goat-herding desert dwellers. Yep, that's exactly what a bright person should base their existence upon.
satanshimself 8 months ago
@satanshimself He doesn't make the world milk and cookies. Sometimes, as a father punishes his children, so does God with His people. The Bible is true. In Revelations, it talks about a prophecy thats coming true. It says everyone will be wearing these "markings" in their right hands or forehead. One of the markings will read as 666 (the antichrist). I read in a history book that scientists are making these microchips and can go in the right hand or forehead. These chips replace credit cards.

musicbackfromthedead 8 months ago
@musicbackfromthedead That's exactly what happened in last year's Annville parade when @eperce chanted within the atheist marching unit, "Support our gay and lesbian troops. You know it's the right thing to do." There was a lot of hate (and a fair amount of support too), and some letters later saying that bringing up the GLBT issue was a bad thing to do because CHILLLLLDRUN were present.
satanshimself 8 months ago
@frotobare I told you 4 times that's not the point. Why do you support the bigotry and hate spewed out by these bigots for your fellow soldiers, and you won't support them? Is it because they(PAN) don't adhere to your brand of whatever imaginary friend myth you been brainwashed to believe? Is it you're just a troll?
