A friend of mine who is really into sports used to catch arrows, however I'm not sure whether our sports bow was really high end and whether it could compete with the bow in the video. But with our bow (which might have been lethal as well) it was possible to catch an arrow.

@galbertrox By "more punch" you mean that they apply more force to the arrow, thus propelling it to higher speeds.

OFC it would be harder to catch such an arrow, especially at the range they show in the clip; The reason is simple physics.

Just because one of these guys can't stop an arrow doesn't mean it cannot be done, period. Distance is a great factor but I have seen it being done on a television program by a master. So training is probably an essential part of it.

Wouldn't try that with a bullet though :-))

i don't know what mythbusters called this but I would have to say it is busted. I saw it done before on Ripley's but that was an unrealistic scenario because the guy catching the arrow knew what path the arrow would take but he relied on sound to know when the arrow would get there. In real life, not only would you not know when the arrow gets there, you wouldn't know what path it was on either. This is way beyond human ability.

@macbeasty It would have to be in plain sight, in the middle of a sunny day, with rainbow feathers on the arrow itself. Iono, I think it would be possible, but not under the "ninja shadowy environments" scenario.

However, the bows at that time are less powerful. In this test, they're definitely not using a 2 bucks bow.

A lot of their supposed abilities are full of myths though. Like arrow catching. Pointless. Ninjas worked for feudal lords as spies, assassins, saboteurs and in certain special forces style roles. They were good at it too. All the silly exaggerations of ninjas come from the fact that people back then were scared shitless of them. If someone powerful wanted you dead, ninjas made it happen without the fuss of law, trials and public executions.

Yes, someone can catch an arrow bare handed. But the myth stated that a ninja can catch an arrow from an unprepared stance, which is unlikely. If they are prepared for the arrow and are expecting the shot, then they might have a chance to catch it. But since when does your opponent allow you to be prepared when he's TRYING TO KILL YOU!?
