Mack the knife was originally written for "Three Penny Opera" in the 1920s/30s Louis sang it in 1954 then Bobby Darin who is probably given the most claim to fame for it sang it in 1958. ny personal favourite is Ella Fitzgerals version keep jazz alive x
@jazzyjulie12 I have to admit but the Frank Sinatra version is what i was brought up with so i can't fault Goo ol' Blue eyes but this version i love because of Louis Raspy voice
I'm reading "Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong." Glaser (his manager) and a producer from Columbia approached Louis with the song. Satchmo took one look at the lyrics and said, " I knew guys just like this in New Orleans. Let's do it."
And the three penny opera is based on the Bettleroper (Beggars Opera) written 1728 by Johann Christoph Pepusch (Germany) and John Gay (UK). 200 years before the premiere of Bert Brecht's and Kurt Weill's version came to life. So you see, nothing new - even not in the 1920s :) Life has always been shit, because of the greedy people amongst us.
The original 'Mack the Knife' ("Die Moritat von Mackie Messer") is German and is part of Kurt Weill's 'Three Penny Opera' (see the German film if you ever get a chance, it's a little tale of thieves and whores and includes the equally wonderful song, 'The Black Raider'; it stars Lotte Lenya among others) so this is far from original but it's a brilliant version and one of my favourites. Thanks for posting it.
Louis Armstrong wasn't the first to sing this song, but he was the first singer to have a record out with this song in english. He also recorded a version with singer Lotte Lenya the same day; which is why he spontaneously added her name at the end of the song.
Great work VinlyToVideo Love the autenticity of the crackle from the Vinly, just nearly as beautifull as the song but not nearly as close, but you know that.
I was Stationed in Japan in 55-56. Played song on a PX Juke Box.Played it several times. Asked friend who was singing it. He said Sammy Davis Jr. I asked him who Sammy Davis Jr. was he said the black one eyed singer. Haven't been able to find Sammy Davis recording of Mack the knife from 55 or 56. He did record it a number of years later from his part in the stage production of Mack The Knife. Maybe I'm losing my mind but if any one knows of SD Jr 55-56 recording please save my sanity. Many thx
This is one of four great versions of the song. The others: Bobby Darin's, of course; Dick Hyman's instrumental (better known as "Moritat"); and Ella Fitzgerald's somewhat novelty version.
0o0o - I was answering a question that freshprinceofbalham was asking. The storyline I described comes from the original German lyrics (no, I don't know German - Wikipedia told me about it), but the English translation is a lot more sanitized than that - they leave out the raping and burning stuff. Well, I do listen to the lyrics (or at least the way Louis sings 'em) - but the overall recording Is priceless.
he plays so brilliant trumpet. that's amazing. we have done the song at school and we play it with our big band but these version is much better then the original one.
so true :) quick round up i'm 22, would describe myself as a 'punk' based on my musical tastes (randic nofx mellincolin the beatsteaks etc) and listen to louis armstrong and the odd bit of classical :) good music is good music and it doesnt matter when or where its from :)
I would never in my life have thought anybody could possibly top Bobby Darin on this. This particular version is great. I swear, this is the way this song SHOULD be played though, in this Dixieland jazz style. Beautiful. Thanks.

GR8 version & quite possibly the original. Louis Armstrong was one fine male vocalist.

Definitely not the original. The original was in German and it came out in the 30s.

When this was written originally it was supposed to be sung with a grating harsh cutting voice. Hense the evil character of "Mack the Knife".
No one before or since has done it better than Louis Armstrong.
