  • ++ This Rendition Of Ole Pops "Has The Patent" Oh YeaHHHHHHHHHHHH. :-0) ++

  • Mack the knife was originally written for "Three Penny Opera" in the 1920s/30s Louis sang it in 1954 then Bobby Darin who is probably given the most claim to fame for it sang it in 1958. ny personal favourite is Ella Fitzgerals version keep jazz alive x

  • @jazzyjulie12 I have to admit but the Frank Sinatra version is what i was brought up with so i can't fault Goo ol' Blue eyes but this version i love because of Louis Raspy voice

  • this song reminds me of my old man, "junior".

  • love this, lous was the man

  • love this, lous was the man

  • Earing this song makes of Mack a very enjoyable person you'd be pleased to meet.

  • This wonderful version is a result of a mix from (at least) two recordings. So what! The result is fantastic!

  • i dont listen do these old styles and kinds of music but I must admit that this song is really masterpiece!

  • Simply brilliant !

  • Like if you think this song should be in the next Fallout game! :D

  • been whistling this for weeks and have no idea why lol

  • GR8 version & quite possibly the original. Louis Armstrong was one fine male vocalist.

  • @AnnihilationISTRUE

Definitely not the original. The original was in German and it came out in the 30s.

  • I'm reading "Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong." Glaser (his manager) and a producer from Columbia approached Louis with the song. Satchmo took one look at the lyrics and said, " I knew guys just like this in New Orleans. Let's do it."

  • Satch is the BEST!!!

  • And the three penny opera is based on the Bettleroper (Beggars Opera) written 1728 by Johann Christoph Pepusch (Germany) and John Gay (UK). 200 years before the premiere of Bert Brecht's and Kurt Weill's version came to life. So you see, nothing new - even not in the 1920s :) Life has always been shit, because of the greedy people amongst us.

  • Louis Armstrong songs would make this planet so pacefull !

  • mack

  • When this was written originally it was supposed to be sung with a grating harsh cutting voice. Hense the evil character of "Mack the Knife".

No one before or since has done it better than Louis Armstrong.

  • louis armstrong amazing wat more can be said

  • Catchy

  • I have this on 78 - thanks for posting, so precious. Keep them coming!!

  • Wish I could find the song he did with a German women singer. My neighbor is from Germany, had my heard it on a tape

  • @underthecoldsun

    maybe this:

    /watch?v=mpMh5auMaVQ

  • Mack The knife was by Mark Weill from Germany

  • @underthecoldsun Kurt Weill*

  • @VinylToVideo Yes, thank you.

  • thank you for louis' best version of this classic masterpiece

  • How dare you not let me thumbs up this.

  • Yea man you spelled it wrong. That will teach you to bunk off school. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA . I am so funny.

  • The original 'Mack the Knife' ("Die Moritat von Mackie Messer") is German and is part of Kurt Weill's 'Three Penny Opera' (see the German film if you ever get a chance, it's a little tale of thieves and whores and includes the equally wonderful song, 'The Black Raider'; it stars Lotte Lenya among others) so this is far from original but it's a brilliant version and one of my favourites. Thanks for posting it.

  • i really want a record player, you can't get better than that big band and brass band being played on a vintage record player

  • LONG STORY SHORT:

Louis Armstrong wasn't the first to sing this song, but he was the first singer to have a record out with this song in english. He also recorded a version with singer Lotte Lenya the same day; which is why he spontaneously added her name at the end of the song.

  • Great work VinlyToVideo Love the autenticity of the crackle from the Vinly, just nearly as beautifull as the song but not nearly as close, but you know that.

God bless thanks for the post VinlyToVideo.

  • I was Stationed in Japan in 55-56. Played song on a PX Juke Box.Played it several times. Asked friend who was singing it. He said Sammy Davis Jr. I asked him who Sammy Davis Jr. was he said the black one eyed singer. Haven't been able to find Sammy Davis recording of Mack the knife from 55 or 56. He did record it a number of years later from his part in the stage production of Mack The Knife. Maybe I'm losing my mind but if any one knows of SD Jr 55-56 recording please save my sanity. Many thx

  • that voice at the beginning is a deeply comforting piece of my childhood :)

  • und der Haifisch der hat Zähne ....

  • Comment removed

  • Louis Armstrong's original recording then?

  • not the original version of the song...if you dig back far enuff...but still my fav version

  • So precious song !!must be a teasure for all the times.

  • que grande louis y su trompeta , que musica

  • I really adore this song. It's on a classic jazz CD i had and I honest to God adore it. Louis voice is like incense smoke. I love it.

  • dankjewel

  • I love this songgggg

  • This is one of four great versions of the song. The others: Bobby Darin's, of course; Dick Hyman's instrumental (better known as "Moritat"); and Ella Fitzgerald's somewhat novelty version.

  • Mackie Messer! 'Die Dreigroschenoper' is the best, so is this song! :)

  • Thank you for posting! Great work!

  • Love this song :-)

    Funky!

  • often i'm listening to bands like down or pantera, but i actually love to sit down sometime and listen to some good old jazz:) incredible!

  • Not many better, what a talent what a joy, yes good music is perpetual and Louis was the best. Thank You!

  • i still dont get what this song is about

  • about a foot

    about a dog

    about a dozen

    about a horse

    : D

  • i do believe it's about a shady murderer (a crafty one) that preys on wealthy people.

  • It's about a guy who kills (with a knife), rapes, steals, and burns things down just for the hell of it all.

  • why listen to the lyrics ? i never do xD

  • 0o0o - I was answering a question that freshprinceofbalham was asking. The storyline I described comes from the original German lyrics (no, I don't know German - Wikipedia told me about it), but the English translation is a lot more sanitized than that - they leave out the raping and burning stuff. Well, I do listen to the lyrics (or at least the way Louis sings 'em) - but the overall recording Is priceless.

  • he plays so brilliant trumpet. that's amazing. we have done the song at school and we play it with our big band but these version is much better then the original one.

  • I always get so happy when I listen to this particular song

  • Love jazz and this song!

  • nicley said :]

  • so true :) quick round up i'm 22, would describe myself as a 'punk' based on my musical tastes (randic nofx mellincolin the beatsteaks etc) and listen to louis armstrong and the odd bit of classical :) good music is good music and it doesnt matter when or where its from :)

  • HELL YEA

  • what a song

  • I love this kind of music! :)

  • Die Dreigroschenoper is pretty cool.

  • i agree

  • Louis rocks

  • ooooh mack the knife

    i love this song

  • me 2 ;)

  • me 3;P

  • This Armstrong version of Mack The Knife is a studio result of more than one recording. But it is brilliant, and in my opinion the best.

  • it is imposible to hate louis, he is jsut to good!

  • Great Music.

  • Well, Sonny Rollins does an amazing version of this, as "Moritat", on his SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS LP. (Max Roach on drums)

  • I would never in my life have thought anybody could possibly top Bobby Darin on this. This particular version is great. I swear, this is the way this song SHOULD be played though, in this Dixieland jazz style. Beautiful. Thanks.

  • yeh, same here i though no one could do it beter but louis's vioce gives it the perfect tone

  • Nobody can match Satch.

  • this man is simply amazing.. untouchable
