  • first heard it on radio station WLAC Nashville Tennessee year 1966. So nice to hear it again from a time so long ago.

  • Of course just one of the best!

    So alive

    So sad

    So soulful

  • Tho it's a Bittersweet song, I really like it....thx Tony

  • Breaks my heart every time I listen to it.

  • It really doesn't matter what genre of music you like, this is one of the best songs ever written and performed. I don't own a single soul album and have very little interest in the genre, but I heard this song many years ago late at night while driving through Iowa and I have never forgotten it.

  • Northern Soul classic. Soul masterpiece. Not many performances anywhere can come close to this.

  • such a great song,i love soul ballad....thanks so much for posting.....love this music, sooooooo sweeetttttttttt......

  • One of the greatest soul ballads of all time. Made the original Hairspray a great movie. The new Hairspray sucked.

  • 3 people were crying so hard they couldn't see through the tears and hit dislike instead of like.

  • @krsname21 :-)

  • @krsname21 bravo!!!!!

  • I Do For Sure Brother!

  • I love this tune, its hard to believe that anyone loves it as much as me.its a tuuuunnnneeee .

  • this one i dedicate to the man that held my heart, but didnt want it. becuase everything happens for a reason and just becuase you may feel someone is right for you, doesnt mean theyre meant to be yours.

  • @smittenbykittens this is so true this says it all

  • This says it all... no response needed!

  • Thnx for posting this song !

  • OMG THIS WAS MY SONG IN HAIRSPRAY!! I loveee it, damn why I had to be born in the 90's lol

  • mmmmmmmm

  • this song came on as i was stuck on the side of highway 95 south at night in North Carolina, i was pn the grass layed out.. thinkin about life and why the fuck was i stuck in that situation.. coulda been at home but instead dedcided to do some dumb shit. as i had my radio turned up, my zune was dead, had the radio on a random station, and as it started to play, staring i the night clouds, tears started rolling down my eyes. i cried like a bitch because this is a beautiful song :)

  • I first heard this song on Hairspray (well all the songs did) and it really touched me...just when I thought I had found a favorite oldtimey song, and this one comes along :o)

  • i love this song,i first heard it in the movie hairspray, you know its a good song when you just gotta hear it once to love it unlike other songs that radio forces us to like because of continuous airplay

  • OMG WOW!...WHAT A TUNE!

  • i knew that mccall had to be connected, to some kind of church, you can hear it in his voice,as for this song it's speaks for ti's self. people back then, wrote and sung with the trueth! they was clean song amen for the yester years!

  • Soul of the DEEPEST quality. Too much. Pulls at the heart strings and supports every spiritual emotion ever felt. An amazing track. Almost too beautiful for words. I remember buying this originally in 1967 (?) on the UK Pye-International label. Still have it and treasure it to this day. Deep Soul rules!

  • Toussaint McCall's vocal is one of the most moving I've ever heard - so smooth, & subtle, yet filled with the kind of despair & raw emotion that conveys the meaning of the lyric & brings the song home. The organ, played by TS, helps to underscore the emotion of the track & ultimately, this ends up being one of the most stirring R&B tracks ever recorded. Toussiant McCall is underrated, & overlooked - yet, he remains one of the best f***ing R&B singers of all time. Absolute perfection.

  • Wow! This is definately one for the playlist on that special date, in, with the S.O. ;)

  • This is the kind of emotional, haunting song that you could actually play at a funeral- I'm sure it's already been done.

  • this was some music i am not black but this is some soul music nowadays you can find music like this this song requires you to go through somthing in order for you to dig and put your sweat and tears to get to the finished music all you get now is uh baby ooo baby uh baby ooo baby, shut the hell up baby and if anyone knows who i got that from he is awesome thumbs uo if you agree

  • this is what music should be short but full of emotion, feeling and most important Meaning wish i were in this period but was born on 86 so didn't get to hear till later from a homeless person that was singing this song and touched the music in me

  • just sit back, shut your eyes, and listen...NICE

  • "Drenched in raw emotion - This is what music & being in love is all about." word. one of the singers who moves me the most.

  • Man, this song describes exactly how I'm feeling now having gone thru a breakup.

  • Awesome song.......

  • Toussaint sang this song at The Colonial Hills Club in Roanoke Virginia in 1966.....Been stuck in my Head ever sine....

  • Just realized the post I was agreeing to was 2 yrs ago. Doesn't matter

  • my mom introduced me to this song and it takes me back to her she passed away a year ago.Its a great song.

  • I have loved this song since the mid-seventies. Britlliant. Thanks for uploading it for all of us with discerning musical taste. :)

  • i miss my grandma

  • This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written and recorded. McCall sings it with such raw emotion! I've never heard anything quite l;ike it. It is so powerful and heart-wrenching.

  • they dont come more beautiful than this

  • absolutley beautiful

  • Praise the Lord for John Waters, Toussaint, Timi and all who kept this great song alive.

  • @BeatleJim55 tell me about it.some people have no taste.

  • wow, one of the greatest songs ever. They don't make music like this any more.

  • God, I love this song.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds hear-hear...

  • @52thanks God, I really hate what they've done to YouTube. It makes no sense, this new setup. The way it used to work, when someone answered a comment you left, you were directed back to your own comment when you clicked it. It's really like they are trying to destroy any social aspect YT may have had. I don't know what I said that you're agreeing to. Anyway, I'm sure it was about what a great song this is. Love it. Hate the new YT.

  • 2 people should see their ear doctor soon...

  • 1967...

  • thumbs up if you came here because of John water's HAIRSPRAY

  • @SweetWhiskerz I had to find this song to prove to my friends that songs in this movie were real and not made up for the film

  • @SweetWhiskerz Well, that's where I first heard this song, and I've loved it ever since....but I'll give you the thumbs-up.

  • Thanks for this posting cause I love this song!!!

  • Sorry the Timi Yuro cover is good but not like this! His voice is so rich.

  • Beautiful old song, always liked it. It's so heartfelt.

  • Eyes as deep and wide as a night sky echoing with a sorrow so human that it's almost grief.. This, my friends was not just heart.. Anyone can give their heart, but only a true kat can give his heart and his soul to a woman.

  • Ah, that was lovely!

  • i love this song!!!!

  • I knew Prince Buster's version, but this original one is even better.

  • yes! i have loved this song ever since i used to watch the movie hairspray as a kid, over and over!

    the best.

  • I am a 55 year old white male. This is true emotion from the soul. I grew up with the blue-eyed soul of Elvis, Jim Reeves, Johnny Rivers, Bill Deal, Michael McDonald, and all. I would always want to play the black soul singers my Mom wouldn't want me to play. lol. This is the real thing. Nothing compares.

  • @rogee43 Johnny Rivers,,Michael McDonald "SOUL" YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN ME. Johnny "copycat" Rivers McDonald sounds like he's STRAINING to sing.

  • dont come any more soulful than this. Just beautiful!

  • Beautiful song. I didn't know he had written it. Johnny Adams did a great version of it.

  • Everytime I hear this song, I think about my father who's been gone for 36 years. He wasn't much into music at all but I remember he always asked me to play this song for him.I guess it made him think about my mother who had passed before him. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • pour ceux qui aime la vie a deux ces une merveilles

  • wonderful song...pulls at the heartstrings..you can't beat the oldies

  • One of the Baddest songs of all time!!!!!!!

  • How can you not love love love a song like this, smooth. . . thanks so much for it

  • I bought the original 45 in the Record Museum in Center City Philly in February

1967. Darned if I know what I did with it.

  • I love this song!

  • I'm only 24 but grew up with oldies such as these and i am truly greatful my mum and dad have such fantastic taste in music so i can show my kids or just sit and sing them to my family as my dad did with us :-)

  • For Brandon

An alley, a bum but a song for all to hear

  • beautiful.

  • I never heard this version (I grew up with the Brook Benton version...mama was crazy about him lol). However, I have a new fav version. Very nice posting.

  • @wcta0608 Brook Benton ??? Toussaint WROTE this. Wolfman Jack always closed his radio shows with this record. You listen to the way he did it (very beautiful) on here. Click on Wolfman Jack THEN listen to the one on THAT OLDIES ALBUM "NOT" THAT DUMB SHORT VERSION with his picture.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 yes. Brook Benton made a version of this on Cotillion Records (circa mid to late 60's I believe. Someone has it posted on youtube. I enjoy both versions. I'm just used to the Benton version.

  • This is so sad, but true..

  • just heard this on Hairspray, excellent song

  • Great song! one of my favorite scenes from Hairspray.

  • this is so sad , but its so good only heard it 6months ago, lovely song.

  • this is what the music of today lacks. Soul!!! You can hear the pain in his voice as he is SINGING not screaming or rapping but singing. In order to love the music of today you have to sit back and appreciate the music of yesteryear that brought us to this point!!!!!!!

  • It just doesn't get any better than this.

  • I have an old cassette recording of the late great Isaac Hayes covering this song and have tried to find it in other formats over the years without success. Any ideas???

  • @MsServina :I just checked cduniverse and they have it on the Black Moses cd ($20).

  • @53JoDi Thanks for checking this out for me, will try again!

  • still one of my all time favs

  • @phunkyjunction ---this is the definition of what soul is! thanks for posting it

  • Nothing will ever take the place of the Marine Villa, a Kingston brothel where I first heard this wonderful sound while watching a beautiful woman undulating under its spell 43 years ago. Talk about magical moments.

  • @salmapliz

    ... Awkward....

  • @Lilja124 Actually she was probably the most graceful woman I have ever seen. So sorry if my personalized reflection left you feeling awkward, if that was what you were trying to convey, but brothels still exist and life goes on.

  • @salmapliz

You can visit all the brothels in the world and look at ladies until your eyes crumble to dust in their sockets from lack of moisture. If you share this with the world though, people will think you're giving just a wee bit too much info. Life goes on.

  • @salmapliz my my arent you a cheery little cookie. at age 68 i give less of a shit what judgmental souls like yourself think is too much information. have a nice life

  • @salmapliz You got that right. Been There Done That (like you) Bought the T-Shirt,,in fact sometimes I was ON THE T-SHIRT. Radio Station promotion T-Shirts.

    Keep On Keepin On !!!

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 Mojo: Thanx for the supportive comment...if there is a Marine Villa tee-shirt I need to know how to get one and if you are indeed on it you have already achieved a particularly distinctive immortality and earned my heart-felt admiration.

  • @salmapliz THAT IS "SO COOL". Keep On Keepin On !!

  • This song rules, totally different from the crap they play today, it's so empty and meaningless, and even if they can't sing they play their damn music anyway!

  • My grandmother gave me all her old 45's and this one was in it... what a great song and I just LOVE it!!

  • I love this song. I love the organ...haunting yet romantic!

  • This is wild....but this song was released in 1967, but "Hairspray" the movie was set much earlier....1960!? Toussaint must have had to get back in his time machine, after singing it in the movie, and go back to the future!?.......:) Love this song!

  • Nice post, and the highlight of "Hairspray" for me.

  • " Every now & then, a song hurts you so bad, ...because that Love, was that Fine!" " There really is something to the old saying: 'I never would have known how bad, if I had never known how good!" " Still, ...I'd do it again, in a heartbeat!

  • One of the best..this song will tear your heart out..nothing can take the place of Toussaint's version..

  • @Sugarbehr1967

    "I agree"

  • I never heard this song in my life i never heard of this man Thanks barbara

so this song brings back all the good memories

    brilliant song

  • This is still on a few Jukeboxes in South Louisiana. So it must be a real classic. Thanks for the Post!

  • I love this music..I grew up listening to it, because it's what my mom listened to when she was a little girl.

I never really appreciated it, I just always wanted to listen to Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys. Lol.

  • Oh my lord...this reminds me of "hairspray" I love that movie...and I love this song;)

  • Thank you so much. I gave up looking for Toussaint McCall because no one knew what I was talking about. This was played in the 1960's. Still good today.
