@MarcusFEB32 Back many years ago (long before anyone now alive was born) people might have refused to recognize one state or region, probably because of positions taken in the US civil war.
Missouri is a completely weird and random state for someone to refuse to recognize, especially 150 years after the war. It's just Grandpa saying something that makes no sense whatsoever, but there's a deep rivalry between sports teams at Missouri and Kansas, so the Kansas people like this lots.
