  • My school is doing this musical this year and as I was watching this clip the song Some Things Were Meant to Be was playing through. For those of you who don't know that is the song when Beth dies and there is a lot of good symbolism in that song. I'm excited to do the play but I fear that I will be crying so much!

  • Its a bit confusing. You will find some editions of Little Women have been released with both volumes inside - volume one being "Little Women" (1868) and volume two entitled "Good Wives" (1869). Originally they were released separately, but some modern editions pack them together in one book.

  • All because her sisters had to be lazy....damn you all! Poor Beth!

  • What does Beth say before Jo closes the window?

  • @Victorian9322 I think she says "oh, my Jo"

  • @Victorian9322 I always thought she said: "Oh, angel...", but upon further listening I think she actually says: "Oh, my Jo..."

  • OMG this makes me cry EVERY time. This and Teddy's proposal to Jo.

  • to all of you people who are saying she doesnt die in the book, she does, but not in the first one. beth dies in the second one.

  • @floridarocks567 that's what I've been saying too but no one gets me. i said she doesn't die in the first book because she dies in the second one.

  • @MzPrincezz021 yeah well i guess they want to believe that she doesnt die so we should leave them be. Lol. ;D

  • I know this is a sad part but I love how there are 0 dislikes!

  • Still get chills listening to the music... A work of art..

  • in tv i wached it and when she got scarlet fever she recovered (So did their Father) but she did not DIE!!!

  • I recently got the part of Beth in the musical version of Little Women in my music theater program, the song is so beautiful, it's called somethings are meant to be- the scene breaks my heart either way, the book, the movie, or the musical! =(

  • how old was she when she died?

  • My Grandad passed away on the 24th of August. I shouldnt have watched this video because it just had me bawling like a baby. Note to self, dont look up clips of old films you love not long after you've lost someone.

  • My mum used to say that when Jo goes to close the window, the wind blowing through the trees is really Beth's soul being set free. The image has always stayed with me.

  • @sweadle my mom said the same to me when i was a child!

  • @sweadle -- That's exactly how I feel. I don't know if you believe in God, but I do, and to me, when the wind howls like that, it was the Holy Spirit blowing...or, in other words, it was God coming to take Beth home. Either way, no matter what one believes, it is a very powerful scene and moment. I cry every time.

  • @archergrl1996 I do believe in God and the more i get older the more i believe that there are mysteries beyond us that cannot be explained on earth but it doesn't mean i never am revolted.Sometimes anger is strong in my heart. However concerning the death of some young people if i am revolted sometimes i think that there maybe are reasons, and same reasons concerning illness or handicaps.

  • @fisteberg -- Agreed. I believe, and my faith is very important to me, but that doesn't mean I don't feel angry at or question God. When I was 11, my 15-year-old cousin was killed in a car accident. I went through a phase where I was furious with God and didn't understand how He could let something like that happen. I realized later that just because you believe in God doesn't mean life automatically becomes good and easy, it just means Jesus will be with you when life gets tough.

  • @archergrl1996 I am very sorry for your cousin. It is very unfair to die at such a young age.But life has to go on even despite tragedies.God can help but it is true that believing in God doesn't mean that you 'll never have an accident or be ill. Life is tough for everyone and happiness and misfortunes are part of life.

  • @fisteberg -- It can definitely feel very unfair, and it is, but that's because of the broken, fallen world we live in. And yes, life does go on. Her death taught me many things, but most importantly, it brought be to a real relationship with Jesus Christ, and that's some of the beauty that comes out of tragedy.

  • i felt really morbid for searching this on youtube.. but im glad to see i'm not the only one!

  • This scene always makes me cry, but I always find it.. almost cruel when Beth says, "Now I am the one going ahead." I guess it's because of the way Danes says it. This scene is so heart-breaking :'(

  • I cried when I watched this :(((

  • I'm not a big fan of Claire Danes, but I think this scene is her best performance.

  • This scene ALWAYS makes me cry :´(

  • All the March sisters have their strengths, but Beth's child-like innocence makes her one of the best (and most overshadowed) characters in 19th century literature

  • makes me cry every time!

  • "Why does everyone want to go away? I love being home. But I don't like being left behind. Now I am the one going ahead."--- perfect description of growing up. :(

  • What's the name of those flowers?

  • @minishellxgang ...Roses?

  • @MzPrincezz021 No, she does in the book. Read the following excerpt from chapter forty -

"But a bird sang blithely on a budding bough, close by, the snowdrops blossomed freshly at the window, and the spring sunshine streamed in like a benediction over the placid face upon the pillow, a face so full of painless peace that those who loved it best smiled through their tears, and thanked God that Beth was well at last."

The well at last in the end implies that Beth was with God.

  • @RushTheSilver i've read Little Women but havent read good wives i've only just started on good wives. and skiped some pages to find that beth is really badly sick and theres nothing she can do about it. the director must have put little women and good wives together into one film. thanks :)

  • @MzPrincezz021 No, no! If you read Little Women chapter 40 and onwards, you'll find that Beth indeed dies. The director, Gillian Armstrong, was perfectly true to the book, and if you read it, you'll find it too. He has not combined any other book's stories into this one. The film is as close to the novel as possible!

  • @RushTheSilver Actually little women was published in the 1868 and it finishes on chapter 23. good wives was published in 1869 a year later and its the continuation of the march family. but it is often published together as if one. my book only goes up to chapter 23. so that means my one is not together. the puzzle is solved :)

  • @MzPrincezz021 That I didn't know!!! Thanks for telling me!

  • @RushTheSilver and @MzPrincezz021

If only everyone could argue so civilly on the internet. Bravo!

  • @ToastedTurtleOnRye -- I know, right? It's so refreshing to see that problems and/or misunderstandings can be solved without yelling, swearing, and crude language.

  • @MzPrincezz021 yes she does!

  • @MzPrincezz021, Beth does die in the book.

  • @MzPrincezz021 she does in the second one :'(

  • @MzPrincezz021 really; well why does she die in the movie

  • Such a moving and well done scene. It gets me every time.

  • its sooooooooooo sad how she dies

  • Its a chick thing, but I really like this! Thanks for the post! Regards ;)

  • This reminds me so much of Arline dying in the movie Infinity. Arline was the wife and great love of genius Richard Feynman. Richie's sister wrote this about Arline -- "She never got to find out what happened to Richie. She never got to have a baby. Arline is missing the party". She died just before two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Genius Richard Feynman was part of the Los Alamos Manhattan Project.

  • It's so sad!

  • I cried watching this scene. What a great chemistry between sisters developed by Claire and Winona. Claire is so stunning in her debut. She looks so convincing with the pale expression. I love beth !

  • Look on the bright side Clair Danes ,you'll be resurrected as Juliet in Romeo and Julie...oh wait

  • @ThatGuywhoSpillNerd Yeah, Juliet dies too!

  • oh, God, i can't.

  • SHE"E MY FAVORITE CHARACTER.. WHY DOES SHE HVE TO DIE?????

  • @twinkletopsable It's not often that someone comes along who is a good writer and a true friend. Charlotte was both. (from Charlotte's Web).

  • Sniff :'(((((( i cry everytime

  • I tried out for Beth but my nemesis got it! She got all the parts that I wanted. I can't picture playing a dying character! To me I think she's too sweet and spunky for Beth! She's good at singing but it's just unfair that she gets all the good parts and I don't!

  • Remarkable!

Clare Danes is an actor of the highest caliber. There is nothing easy about this scene. And she holds her own with any of the greatest actors of any generation. Even after her Oscar, if she never did any thing else, this scene should be required viewing for all who study the acting craft.

And Newmans sound track.....don't get me started! Do your self a favor and buy it!

  • @Storkus100 Hey, Claire Danes did just win an Emmy for her portrayal of Temple Grandin!

  • @Storkus100 she won an oscar for this performance?

  • An absolutely marvelous performance by Claire Danes.

This remains one of my most favourite scenes (albeit sad) in any movie.
