They can instead collect a portion of what federal govt collect and fund themselves instead of funding the big cats.

Texas is the only state that can break away from the union due to the fact that it was a territory when it joined and then later became a state. Slavery in fact required centralization in order to maintain and protect itself, it needed despotic principles of government, but it needed them exclusively for its own use, The confederate rebel state was more centralization & gave its federal government a wider scope of authority in its "constitution" then the union, The Slave owning class wanted centralization since the abolitionist movement was more successful at a local state level then at the fed.

@jxsilicon9 Ft Sumpter was in South Carolina. The federal government has no jurisdiction in a region that has disconnected itself from it, fired it. Naturally the people in that region did and should today have control of their local area. There was a cultural conflict the Republican party was an anti-southern party and still is. The platform didn't even mention ending slavery it was a way for the north to try and enact unfair taxation on people that only made up 25% of the Union.
Finally you make a good point. The war started in April because the confederates attacked Fort Sumter. Obviously if it was about Union aggression then the union would have started the war when the first states seceded.Lincoln was busy trying to bring the South back into the union and preventing European countries from intervening during those months.

@jamesappleridge Delaware's population was mostly slave. It sided with the Union throughout the whole war. New Jersey had 250 slaves. New York still had some slaves that were not free due to not meeting the gradual emancipation set age yet. Almost all of the northern states had older slaves at that time who were too old for the gradual emancipation laws to affect them. Grant owned slaves as did Sherman.
Since the federal government consistently proves that it does not respect the constitutional structure of the states and feels that it has the right to dictate and limit what state's rights are, which has been the case for well over 20 years, then seccesion is a great option.

I've never understood why it is that states step away when the IRS comes after a citizen of those states. Why is it that people have not demanded protection from their states against the federal government. Certainly states are in a much stronger position than individuals with regard to defending against a very powerful fed.
There is a massive divide between the red and blue states. I have no problem with SC leaving the Union, in fact I think it would be an awesome thing to help keep our liberties in check. The bottom line is that the blue states want socialism and the red states want liberty. The best thing conservative states can do is get out of the way so the commies can run the 2 coasts into the oceans, then after 20 or so years when they are failed states we can come back in and help them back up.

Texas is the only state that can break away from the union due to the fact that it was a territory when it joined and then later became a state. No the war was between the Union and Confederacy. Slavery would have ended in one form but would have just created a new form of slavery. Forcing them to work in factories for free or any number of things. It still would have lasted a lot longer. Civil war has nothing to do with what the government has become. It was inevitable like all countries. The elite will eventually rule. It was lawyers and elites pounding at laws for decades that created what we have today.

I go by what slaves and free men said as well as the founders when the Government was established not big government promoting textbooks printed in New York. The rest of the world knows what happened. Why don't you ask the English what they think or Canadians?

They said a lot of things. Just go read the articles of secession.They explain why they seceded which is because they didn't want someone taking their property(slaves). The border states and Northern states were against the traitor South. They supported the constitution which the South didn't.The South started the war before Lincoln even got in because they were afraid he would take away slavery.It really started over slavery in the new territories. South wanted it but they didn't.

@jxsilicon9 No read actual documets and treaties. Lincoln broke an armistice with the CSA. When the south left everyone was fine. The only reason Lincoln forced a confrontation was because of the loss of federal revenue. "Who will pay for the Union" - Lincoln. The reason for secession was because didn't want to live with Yankees with superiority complexes any longer. We could have fought a war if the only issue was slavery without leaving. We were and never will be part of your America.

Those are real documents.Read the Declaration of Causes of Secession issued by the confederate states.Lincoln never said that. So they just seceded when Lincoln was going to be elected for what reason?If not slavery?Lincoln had no plans to attack the seceding states.Instead trying to talk with them.But when they attacked Fort Sumter.They started the war.

@jxsilicon9 Believe what you want the truth doesn't lie. And if you read those clauses you will see it was far more than slavery that was causing the south to leave. Read South Carolina's. Lincoln had no problem with slavery. Have you even read Jefferson Davis' inaugural address? Wanting a separation from the north is not wanting slavery. You must regain your reason and look objectively at both sides. Secession makes zero sense if we were culturally one people and slavery was the only problem.

Of course it does. Economically the South made its money from agriculture. And you don't want to do it yourself or have to pay someone. Slavery is an old economic system.

@jxsilicon9 Ft Sumpter was in South Carolina. The federal government has no jurisdiction in a region that has disconnected itself from it, fired it. Naturally the people in that region did and should today have control of their local area. There was a cultural conflict the Republican party was an anti-southern party and still is. The platform didn't even mention ending slavery it was a way for the north to try and enact unfair taxation on people that only made up 25% of the Union.

Finally you make a good point. The war started in April because the confederates attacked Fort Sumter. Obviously if it was about Union aggression then the union would have started the war when the first states seceded.Lincoln was busy trying to bring the South back into the union and preventing European countries from intervening during those months.

@jxsilicon9 Some of the north was tricked into violating the constitution and some of it tried to fight back against what Lincoln was doing but the northern democrats were unfortunately eventually defeated and with the ousting of Vallandigham Lincolns presidential competition in 1864 there was no way to stop the power grab. Short term gains are never worth long term failure.

@jamesappleridge Delaware's population was mostly slave. It sided with the Union throughout the whole war. New Jersey had 250 slaves. New York still had some slaves that were not free due to not meeting the gradual emancipation set age yet. Almost all of the northern states had older slaves at that time who were too old for the gradual emancipation laws to affect them. Grant owned slaves as did Sherman.

Since the federal government consistently proves that it does not respect the constitutional structure of the states and feels that it has the right to dictate and limit what state's rights are, which has been the case for well over 20 years, then seccesion is a great option.

I've never understood why it is that states step away when the IRS comes after a citizen of those states. Why is it that people have not demanded protection from their states against the federal government. Certainly states are in a much stronger position than individuals with regard to defending against a very powerful fed.

There is a massive divide between the red and blue states. I have no problem with SC leaving the Union, in fact I think it would be an awesome thing to help keep our liberties in check. The bottom line is that the blue states want socialism and the red states want liberty. The best thing conservative states can do is get out of the way so the commies can run the 2 coasts into the oceans, then after 20 or so years when they are failed states we can come back in and help them back up.

Constitution and Bill of Rights exist to limit the size of the federal government. The federal government was seen as a necessary evil that had to be limited so there won't be tyranny like in England at the time.

@TribeTPaul Every politician for decades caused the problem, its not just President Bush but yes I do acknowledge as a Republican the first part of the crash happened under his watch. Now, Obama promised "Hope and Change" and guess what we got neither, I would give him credit he deserves had he really did a total 180. Instead Obama has spent more money then every president before him and he keeps spending and spending and Americans have come out in such numbers because change has not happened!
