Here's what I think happened in this contest: Bill Pearl was training Chris Dickerson, a well known fact in upper bodybuilding circles. While I doubt Pearl would have gone to any judge to say "vote for my guy", the judges might very well have been influenced by knowing Pearl's involvement, and, in a close contest like this, that might have been just the few points edge Dickerson needed. Bill Pearl was of course, one of the most well known bodybuilders in history.
There's no way Dickerson should have won any Olympia! This guy has torn biceps, no chest density and his back was not on par with the other competitors of his era. Pure politics!

I gotta disagree, take a look at franco columbu in 1981, he had no legs, same small arms and a huge boob over his right pec that looked like it would start lactating at any moment
@steroidsR4fantastic Well, you're right about that...but that was all because he previously seperated the ligaments in his knee and tore them off completely while running with a 500 pound refridgerator in the 1977 World's Strongest Man Contest. He was in a cast for months and decided to make a come-back at the 81' Olympia, (albiet prematurely,) and apparently roided-up tremendously without training that much, and won. But his physique from years past was superior to Dickerson's in every way.

Dickerson never was a legend, and still isn't. He had so many flaws - knobby elbows, poor insertion of the outer chest, too much flare of his thighs near the waist, the list goes on.
If you look at his face it's like he knew....I have to wonder if the fix was in.

If the night that you stand on stage you are notthe best, you will not receive the honors. Dickerson is a legend because he won an Olympia, and he did'nt have to beat Arnold because he beat Zane. If you beat a legend, you will be known as one. Bodybuilding is a lot like boxing. No matter how strong your rep is the opponent is there to kick your ass!
I loved Chris Dickerson, but I've alway found it funny how EVERY bodybuilder sooner or later will be referred to as "a legend in bodybuilding." Chris had not won a Mr. O to this point, yet he AND Zane--who'd won three, had beaten Arnold in the 1968 Mr. Universe, etc--BOTH get referred to by the announcer as legends. No disrespect to Chris, but he was merely very, very good. "Legend," however, is another thing altogether. He's barely remembered to this day.
Dickerson had great symmetry and proportion - especially in his legs, but Zane was the true Mr. Olympia that day because he had the proportions and look of a Greek-Roman statue. Zane is the epitome of what Mr. O's should look like.
Let us be honest, although Zane is a great Bodybuilder(legend), Chris is a better combination between mass and Classical Physique. That is why he won, just look at the two standing next to one another. You can clearly see Dickerson is better devolved (mass/Classical). Just for the record, Zane is a great Bodybuilder so no disrespect meant.
One more observation: the top two men in this Olympia are extremely intelligent, very well-spoken and educated men. This contrasts pretty sharply against the competitors of today, who are mainly a bunch of knuckle-dragging morons. You ever hear Ronnie Coleman talk? Conversations with Cutler are described as being "mind-numbing."
All the smart people got out of pro bodybuilding once drug use hit high gear.

Actually, Chris Dickerson's last contest was the '84 Olympia, not this one. No doubt Frank Zane was at his most massive (the '82 Olympia). He even admitted that in his quest to be bigger, he lost a little of his typical razor cuts. Chris Dickerson deserved victory

i donno man, i really can't say who was better...i mean sure zane has nice lines and proportions and a better mid section, but dickerson had a better back and over all legs, i'd say their arms, shoulders, and chest were pretty much on par with eachother..maybe zane had a little bit better chest but, they had the same conditioning! You're entitled to your opinion. The fact is, Arnold wasn't at his best in 1980, shadow of his former self in 1973/74, when he'd have blown any of these guys away. I agree many Olympias have been fixed. Danny Padilla or Tom Platz should have won in 1981.
Of course Arnold wasnt the best version of Arnold in 80,However, he was the best bodybuilder on stage in 1980. Arnold in 75 wasnt nearly as good as in 74 either, but was still the best bodybuilder onstage. But YES, Padilla or Platz shouldve won in 81. My money is on Padilla edging out Platz. Dickerson although a great champion was "gifted" this title here in 83. Also, speaking of fixed. Ronnie beating Jay in 01. Jay beating (fresh out of prison) Victor in 07. Just wish the BEST would win
I actually think Mentzer should have placed higher in 1980. I agree about Padilla - one of my favourite physiques ever - better symmetry and balance then Platz. Sadly, bodybuilding is fixed, so the best often miss out ... Labrada in 1990, would be another example, or Ray in 1994.
Totally agree! Mentzer was the best in 1980, not Arnold or Dickerson. In 1982, I thought Samir should have won (tho he did a year later). Fox should have placed higher in 1983. Ray or Levrone should have won in 1996 and 1997 too.

Dickerson had told them all he was retiring and they gave it to him as a special gift. It was fixed like many others had been over the years. Remember the one when Mike Mentzer beat Arnold but they gave it to Arnold anyway.
I went to this contest. We were told not to clap during Frank Zane's posing routine. I think some people therefore booed. I gto a few autographs and had a lot of fun.
Always though Frank was ripped off here. Dickerson was at the top of his game but just couldn't compare to Zane's impeccable balance and symmetry. After this, the Mr Olympia would begin to favor size over aesthetics. Today's Mr. O' is a freak show and a travesty.
Dickerson was in great condition, but he has a torn biceps, a torn pec, and a freaky left elbow. Viator was in great shape, also, but his body lacks pleasing shape and symmetry. On this night, Zane represented the best balance between condition, development, shape, symmetry, and presentation. Zane should have won.

You're entitled to your opinion. The fact is, Arnold wasn't at his best in 1980, shadow of his former self in 1973/74, when he'd have blown any of these guys away. I agree many Olympias have been fixed. Danny Padilla or Tom Platz should have won in 1981.

Of course Arnold wasnt the best version of Arnold in 80,However, he was the best bodybuilder on stage in 1980. Arnold in 75 wasnt nearly as good as in 74 either, but was still the best bodybuilder onstage. But YES, Padilla or Platz shouldve won in 81. My money is on Padilla edging out Platz. Dickerson although a great champion was "gifted" this title here in 83. Also, speaking of fixed. Ronnie beating Jay in 01. Jay beating (fresh out of prison) Victor in 07. Just wish the BEST would win

I actually think Mentzer should have placed higher in 1980. I agree about Padilla - one of my favourite physiques ever - better symmetry and balance then Platz. Sadly, bodybuilding is fixed, so the best often miss out ... Labrada in 1990, would be another example, or Ray in 1994.

Totally agree! Mentzer was the best in 1980, not Arnold or Dickerson. In 1982, I thought Samir should have won (tho he did a year later). Fox should have placed higher in 1983. Ray or Levrone should have won in 1996 and 1997 too.

@Deanodiamond i agree with your assessment (Viator) that's his genetics, his training took him as far as he could go, his build is awkward. Zane's bulky look was awesome, but i don't dissagree with the decision.

I disagree mrswolls. I love Zane don't get me wrong, I think he has the perfect physique, and he should have won, but he seems like a sore loser here. It's Dickerson who puts out his hand before the announcement, it's Dickerson who praises Zane, but Zane doesn't really acknowledge him because he can't wait to get the hell out of there.

Dickerson had told them all he was retiring and they gave it to him as a special gift. It was fixed like many others had been over the years. Remember the one when Mike Mentzer beat Arnold but they gave it to Arnold anyway.

The 1982 result should be 1st Frank Zane, 2nd Casey Viator and 3rd Chris Dickerson . The Judges doesn't know how to judge ? what a fix !

I went to this contest. We were told not to clap during Frank Zane's posing routine. I think some people therefore booed. I gto a few autographs and had a lot of fun.

Always though Frank was ripped off here. Dickerson was at the top of his game but just couldn't compare to Zane's impeccable balance and symmetry. After this, the Mr Olympia would begin to favor size over aesthetics. Today's Mr. O' is a freak show and a travesty.

Dickerson was in great condition, but he has a torn biceps, a torn pec, and a freaky left elbow. Viator was in great shape, also, but his body lacks pleasing shape and symmetry. On this night, Zane represented the best balance between condition, development, shape, symmetry, and presentation. Zane should have won.
