I ventured here because I like Russel on panelshows and such, but I'm afraid his stand up work is not for me. It seems to me he is basing his comedic value more around saying (random) things that are not funny per se in a comedic manner (In the sense that if you were to write it down it would work much less). As I personally focus more on the words used than the manner in which they are spoken, I'm afraid most of his jokes are lost on me. He always comes across as a kind and fun bloke though.

He's far more intelligent than anyone gives him credit for, and his particular brand of overly-dramatic humor is geared towards a specific type of person. Personally, he's one of my favourite comedians.

He just knows the surface, superficial details of things and knows how to cross reference them to SOUND clever. That isn't a bad thing, it got a me a 2:1 at university and still lets me pull posh birds, but it isn't being particularly intelligent. It is just glib and superficial. This isn't an insult.
