The Luo in kenya are called jokowiny or Joka Owiny - which is the descendants of Owiny. The Acholis are descended from Achol. The Luos of Kenya and TZ cannot therefore claim they are THE LUOS. They are just a clan (in the wider sense) and only that there are no other Luo tribes in Kenya like in the case of UG and Sudan.
This song is by Acholi musician, I don't know his name. Acholi and Lango understand each other 100%. In Radio Uganda we have single programme slots for Acholi and Lango referred to as Luo programmes. For example news in Luo is read by either Acholi or Lango news caster.
I am an Acholi, and I used to be a teacher in Siaya, at Barding Secondary. I could'd speak doluo, but I understood dohluo 95%. Kenya Luos are very simmilar to Acholi in social life. Luos are very generous, too generous infact.
we should abolish the defination acholi, langi and alur to just LWOO or LUO people PERIOD. Even start teaching luo language up to senior level in the luo areas in uganda, stay together stay strong, we will be the one ending up losing because of separation in any how......
It doesnt matter, what they say or words they use, fact is that they are luos. am a luo from Kenya and so proud to hear them rap in DHOLUO, weldone Jaluo. Am Wuodkojwang Jakosango in USA
Wer ma ber. Wer Dho Luo tek. Chunya edong met kede. BTW is this Lango or Acholi? I am Sudanese Luo of South Sudan. The closest African Country to us is Central African Republic. It is good to know we have other Luo long lost brothers and sister in Uganda and Kenya.
luo is the name OF a tribe in KENYA AND SOUTH SUDAN it also stand as a name for all LUO SPEAKERS INCLUDING: LUO THEMSELF, ALUR, ACHOLI, ANYUAK, LANGO, JUR, and many more that i don't know about.
I am a Kenyan Luo and i can only understand 30% of the words in this song ... Damn, what happened when we were migrating from Sudan ... We must have lost some words along the way when inter-marrying ...
Hey, am a Kenyan Luo ... I'd like to compare some notes between Kenyan Luo and Langi because seems like i can only understand 30% of the words in this song though the flow sounds similar to Luo ... Do the Langi understand Padhola, Kumam, Acholi and Karamojong and vice versa because those are too many sub-branches of the Luo ... In Kenya we only have Luo as well as Tanzania and we all understand each other ... Is that the same with the Luo's of Uganda or not?
Though i can only understand 30% only ... I don't know what happened to Kenyan Luo but seems as we inter-married with other tribes we lost some Luo words ... I had an Acholi friend in Primary School back in Kenya and i could not understand him at all.
I understood what you just wrote though am Luo ...
Seems to me that this is Ugandan Luo (Acholi, Padhola, Lango, Kumam, Karamojong etc), and thats why you could not understand most of the words just like me ... Am a Kenyan Luo and these words just can't register in my mind ...
The flow is just like ours ... Koso ariambo ja'kogalo ... Gor Mahia ...
The only Luo words i can pick from this song are "Kaneni, Chunya, Inega, Ibaro Wiya, Iwache, Jaber, Iber Na, Ichaya, Kata, Kidwaro to, Okech, Mara, Matimo ree" ...
Am assuming that this is Acholi and its close to the Luo we speak in Kenya ...
From this song, I can see that as the Luo's migrated from Sudan and left some of their brothers along the way we lost some of our words and picked up some words from the tribes we inter-married with ...

I rest my case - you are not luo.
