He had to position the cue ball for the nine, that's why he hit that hard, unexpectedly that the 8 ball jumped back. The nine ball can be seen at the bottom of the table, 0:06
I did that once with the cue ball. I tried to put a draw on it and hit it too low and hard and it jumped over my target ball, into the side pocket and jumped itself back out a lot like the 8-ball here.
