You make/play music for film or TV, don't you?! I know, come on: People can tell! So... if you don't, you should. (but first, where is it that you work or play?)
Whilst the SY77 and SY99 share the same RCM (AWN2+FM) synthesis system, the SY99 has a waveform ROM with much better waveforms and twice as large (8MB) as well as completely redesigned multi FX processors. The sequencer is also better with 10 song capacity and 27,000 notes as opposed to 1 song and 16,000 notes on the SY77. I've played both and found the SY99 to sound much better particularly the acoustic instruments and drum programs.
Hey Colton, Maybe a dumb question , but you have a demo on two different keyboards. This one, the SY-99 sounds maybe a bit more professional but i'm really not sure. If I was buying an old skool keyboard , which one of these two would you recomend?
@Soler0 I guess you're probably right about that but my question was actually more about the DX7 like FM E. Piano patches starting at 0:40, which sound very impressing here. I think that F0nkyNinja already answered my question. But maybe some of these patches make use of additional AWM elements like samples of a real Fender Rhodes. Has anyone ever analyzed that?
YouTube will not allow me to post a link to the video I'm referring to, see the Yamaha SY99 Demo Songs by SY99DEMO in the links on the right hand side of this page.
@0151scoobyb : The SY85 was AWM (sample) synthesis only, the SY77/99/TG77 were AWM and AFM, so you had 6op DX7 type synthesis in addition to the AWM synthesis. As well, the AWM and AFM can be interactive (such as using an AWM waveform as an AFM operator), the SY77/TG77 cannot load user samples, the SY99 can. Check this SY99 demo where all of the audio including Chick Corea's voice (user samples that were loaded) is from the SY99.
I have a question colton, How would I make my own sounds...and is it easy to do this? And I can store the sounds on a floppy disc right? Also does this keyboard do drums as well?
The SY, EX and Motif series are totally amazing. I have a SY55 and TG55 with all seven WAVEFORM / DATA card sets, plus every other set of DATA cards. It has the same sample engine as the SY77, some identical presets and samples infact but lacks the FM of course; I have a PLG100-DX in one of my MU100R modules anyway. I come to love my SY more and more over the years and I bought it back in May 1991, so this thing has legs for sure!
These SY and TG are starting to fetch silly money on Ebay.
to me the ex series is until today the best combination of rom-player-workstation and programming synth, and besides it is a real virtual analog - a hammersynth really !!!,
and unlike the roland xp series it has an extremely friendly structure and sequencer.
good sounds. i also have a sy99. i'm trying to make a piano sound like roland rd100 piano. starting with very short samples and making them evolve by fm synth....(rcm synthesis)
Can anyone please tell me, why the Electric Piano presets on the SY-99 sound different (even better!) than on the SY-77? Is it only because of the better internal fx processor? Or is it because the patches are programmed differently?
Not really. The sequencer memory was extended in the 99 and they added some sample RAM, so the SY99 can play back samples loaded via floppy disks or MIDI bulk transfer.
@F0nkyNinja :You can also save SY99 patches in SY77 format and load them from the SY77 disk drive. And IMHO, using a computer is not always "the easiest way", I took the computer out of my keyboard rig years ago. As well, loading user samples on the SY99 is much more efficient from the SY99 disk drive.
The SY99 is a great SYNTH. This demo is a little bit boring though with too many (FM) e-pianos. Sure you can use it as a rompler too but the sounds are a bit dated. It is when you use this synth as a SYNTH it's really shining.
Funny enough, when I bought mine (£150) I was also searching for a DX7, but I was well aware of the Sy77. Thus, I bought SY77 as soon as I saw the ad!. I had to sell it unfortunately, as I moved away and it couldn't follow. Weirdly enough, I've just purchased a DX7-IID, whilst looking for a SY77!
@coltoncraft23 I would disagree, the SY99 is incrementally better as you can load user samples to create sounds/effects that are not possible on the SY77. And I've had an SY77 since '89, added an SY99 several years ago.
The SY77 and SY99 are basically the same synthesizer, the SY99 have a bigger keyboard and maybe some more piano and e-piano AWM samples. The FM section is identical, and you can think of it as a DX7 on steroids. I own the SY77, it's a great and heavy-duty machine
I used to own a SY77, and letting it go was hard :(. Amazing machines, highly underrated - but that's a good thing, you can generally pick them up cheap due to this! :)
Yeah, I got mine for about 200 euros (~300$). It was a great deal. I remember I was looking for a DX7, and I saw on the Internet a SY77 for sale at that price. I done some research for the techical specification of this keyboard, and when I saw that is an FM (even better than the DX7) + PCM synthesizer I returned back to the auction page and clicked the "buy now" button without any doubt
I must always laugh how people pay thousands today for crap sounding keyboards like a Motif or whatever.

@sauermusicDE
They're programmed differently. You can import the E.P piano presets from the SY99 to the SY77. The easiest way being through the use of SY manager.

Glory to the SY-99 !
One of the best keyboards of it's time.
I use mine with a Roland D-50, Hammond XK-3 and a Korg SG-Rack. Talk about vintage :-)

The SY77 and SY99 are just as good as the other. Put both on stage. It really doesn't matter. It's the guy using them, not the instrument.
