Actually saw Tyrannosaurus Rex at the very first IoW Festival in 1968 I believe. Main act was Jefferson Airplane. Also on the bill were Fairport Convention, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Move, Pretty Things, Pink Faries, Orange Bicycle, Aynsley Dunbar and John Peel as compere. Still got the ticket and the cost was £1.50!
The albums Unicorn (with Took) and Beard of Stars (with Finn), were his masterpieces. But Salamanda Palganda, after many years, I relised, was my faourite song of all. I know every word by heart 30- 40 years later, lol
'Small girl with a smiling gibbon, bridled with an orchid ribbon......'
Such unique stuff. Yeah, Steve Took was sacked by Marc cos he was taking too much acid and whipping himself onstage with a belt, but he still had great musical abilities......
Gloriously bonkers! The early Tyrannosaurus Rex stuff is a wonderful mixture of tripped-out Hippy lunacy pretending it all means something by drenching everything in ripped-off Tolkienesque imagery.
Steve Took was completely out of his tree most of the time, but he had a great sense of rhythm on the bongos, far better than the later Micky Finn on the congas!
This is the first time I've looked up this band here. What a pleasant surprise. The quality of the writing and performing is superb. I'd forgotten how good he was.
I was one of those (too serious for my own good) people who loved this stuff but went off Marc when he became ' too commercia (man)'.
What a pratt I was; I now listen to all his stuff and think it's all great. He wrote some fantastic songs at each stage of his career right up until the end; even after he had lost popularity.
I have all his albums and can randomely put on any one of them and it will hit a spot somewhere inside.
@cavewaller I have to agree with you cavedweller a lot of people at that time where too serious for their own good. Musical snobs I think they'd be called today. I bought Hot Love, my first single, from an older girl (she was 15) coz Bolan "had sold out". The following year she was selling Alice Cooper's Killer album coz of his Schools Out single. He had "sold out" too. HaHa the folly of youth. The press didn't help with Bolan they were on his case. Now we have things like Kylie at Glastonbury!
Make you wonder what his music would be like if he had lived. I have a copy of Warlock of Love & if Bolan wasn't on drugs then he was from a different planet!
slaweek033, I like both Morrison & Bolan; neither were better than the other, they were different styles. Both died too young with the unfulfilled promise of more great music
louis I agree. Took's performance in this makes the song what it is. It is only when you make a conscious effort to listen to Took's part you recognise just how magical he was, and then once you are aware of it, at each subsequent replay you notice how Took's voice has more effect on the overall sound than marc's
Who wrote the song? I think Took was god but to add little oohs and ahs to someone else's song does not "make the song what it is" Bolan's voice and crazy lyrics do that.
Bolan was drug free??? Uh,..........you apparently never saw him live in later years. he was barely able to perform. Apparently he cleaned up near the end, but the last 2 times I saw him were dissapointing.
Listening to Tyrannosaurus Rex (pre-T Rex) in 1970 etc was pretty bizzare, but like the guy said - it grows on you. Then I heard "Elemental Child" and I got the point! DAMN!
drugs are so ridiculous. Steve Peregrin Took had such an amazing voice, but eventually got so stoned that he choked on a maraschino cherry and died. A MARASCHINO CHERRY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
But god, what beautiful vocals. Their voices blended so nicely.
Like many fans I hadnt heard any Tyrannosaurus Rex material till the tracks on Bolan Boogie and then the Flyback albums in 1972. I have to admit that I didnt know what to make of it but it grew on me. Marc was completely drug free but acid destroyed Steve Peregrin Tooks already fragile mind.
Me too .. I got into the earlier long name stuff through the flyback issue. i heard T.Rex album (wizard et al) and then went back from there. Glad I did ...
this is genious. beats the beetles or donavans hippy stuf.u got to dig the album.i think its called my people were fair and wore flowers in their hair but now they are proud to wear stars on their brows.sumthin like that.i just put it 2 cd from viynl. mark was a tru artistic genious.my dad totaly use to dig t-rex and i grew up on it. now i play gtar this is like a gold mine of inspiration. so unknown, and under rated.even john peel chats some spoken word poetry on one trak.peace and love baby.
hi i hope this is,nt taken wrong but the ful title of the album in question is ,my people were fair and had sky in their hair ut now their content to wear stars on their brows ...umm just wanted to offer a little hel with the title of the album .all the best to u .
@butler2035 Yeah, I seriously don't see how Bolan's so unknown. I think everyone that listened to rock in the 70s knows who he is. I wouldn't know who he was if it wasn't for my dad either. I knew about T. Rex, just not Marc.
This is THEE stuff. Marc was and is the definition of "amazing". Never be anyone like him again. With all the crap out there this reminds one of how music was before the invasion of the corporate wars on music happened. Tyrannosaurus Rex!
Marc started the whole glam image and even encouraged good buddy Elton John to pursue his flambuoyant ways. If it weren't for Marc, many artists would have been stuck in a groove with long hair and jeans, and not know what else to do. Even Ringo Starr admired him. Marc Bolan IS the Main Man. He will forever be the first for alot of daring - and hot - steps in the music world.
Apparently you haven't seen Ringo joking around with Marc before shows in his dressing room with OTHER PEOPLE THERE. No one is slamming anyone except YOU. Come off it.
Hey, has anyone else heard anything about that new DVD 'T. Rex on TV?' It supposedly came out several months ago but I haven't been able to find it. It's supposed to include several rare, European TV spots that Marc and Mickey did.
Loving it. "Prophets, Seers and Sages..." is one of my favourite of the Tyrannosaurus Rex albums. The lyrics are so trippy and intricate and Marc's voice -- unrestrained, to put it lightly. And the bizarre scat -- "too-wit too-woo" ... priceless. There's really, really nothing else like them out there.
Fabulous! I was only old enough to appreciate T.Rex after they shortened their name, but I always prefered the earlier material. This is wonderful, thankyou Jon! Where DO you find these clips?
I did the same, started with T. Rex and worked my way back, and I was delighted with what I found! Bolan and Took always had some kind of understated beauty that T. Rex never had.
And where did I find it you ask? Now that would be telling!

Nor is it a fluke that the Marc Bolans, John Lennons. Bob Marleys and Thon Yorkes are either
