  • Is this what we can expect to see with the new 21st Century Steam Program? Will 4501 eventually pull long distance excursions at high speed like shown here? Will they put a diesel behind for protection? In this video there is a diesel behind 4501.

  • Steam is back! Norfolk Southern is finally allowing steam excursions on their rails again! We should see the first excursions this summer, 2011 with locomotive #630.

  • you know why doesnt ns just restore one there steam engines and use them for their excursions not those old diesels

  • norfolk southern will once again run steam starting next year in cooperation with the tennessee valley railroad museum!

  • Now THAT is a whistle.

  • 4501 had a different whistle than this back in 1992 for the Chattanooga trip. It seemed higher-pitched than this. Gorgeous engine she is :-)

  • @FreeFallin1976 Yes, in the 1990's she wore a Southern 3 chime step top, top lever whistle.

  • Ted Troxell RULES

  • 726 RULES. It's the Ted Troxell car now.

  • Are you referring to the coach No. 726? That is the Man O' War at the WMSR, ex. CofG. Always has been the Man O' War as far as I know, never has the name changed.

  • 726 rules. its the Ted Troxell car now

  • I love this whistle on the 4501. I remember her having this whistle when she came through Columbia, SC in '85

  • Great footage thanks for sharing this! I used to have a HO scale model of this exact engine! I also saw it in Austell,Ga on a few occasions back in the 80's! 5***** and Favorite!

  • This vid is filled with some realy nice approach shots!!!! Dang nice vid! 5 stars!!!

  • I love the Green Color! Classic Southern Railway!

  • Yea the green adds to it. By me they are mostly black, Inyo steam engine has red and brass in it.

  • The whistle in this particular video is a Crown Metals reproduction of a Boston and Maine 6-chime. It was owned by Doug Karhan, the Master Mechanic at the time. TVRM 610 often carries a similar whistle of Central of Georgia origin (supposedly). It sounds almost identical to this one. 4501's "signature" whistle is a 3-chime steptop cast at the company shops in Princeton, Indiana.

  • Whatever happened to this particular whistle (the 6 chime)?

  • Doug donated it to TVRM. It is hard to tell the two 6-chimes apart. In fact, I think the Crown whistle may have been the one they used for most of last season before putting the Virginia & Southwestern steamboat whistle on last fall.

  • Also...I misspoke about the '01's "signature" whistle. It was actually cast at Lenoir City, TN, like all of Southern's whistles, and machined at Princeton.

  • Mike, that whistle in this video is Reading & Northern 425's Boston & Maine 6 chime whistle. I remember hearing that whistle back on the eve of 12/10/95 when it was returning to Steamtown NHS. I'll keep ya posted on any of your videos.

  • @Miketherailfan I believe it's still at T.V.R.M. I think it's a crown 6 chime.

  • @203lindy It's a Central of Georgia 6 chime, for sure. It's still at TVRM and we last used it on 610 in 2009.

  • @SR6900 oh, ok. thanks for the correction Kyle.

  • I like that whistle on old #4501!

  • Ha Ha Want to see part 2 .

    u got 5

  • yo can now see it in chatanooga

  • yeah ,thats not the usual whistle that 4501 is known for

  • wow what whistle is that on the 4501? great video
