Considering that the burglar had over two dozen previous offences and had only been released from jail on Saturday, I'd say that the lad did society a favor.
If there winds up being some sort of trial, I'd stand fully in support of the student, hoping that I'd have the courage to do the same thing in that situation.

He also was a dangerous as one of his previous offenses was trying to pull a gun on a cop.
The very fact he immediately went back to crime shows he was a career criminal.
Someone with some sense would at least try to stay out of trouble for a few months after getting out of jail.
So yes this is a classic DLP situation.
