Holy crap! Thank God or YouTube so talent like this can make it back out to the masses - and we won't drown in the music industry's garbage of today. tx for uploading. ; )
I saw them on this tour in London at Dingwalls, it was amazing. After the show the band just hung out on the stage and chatted with the audience, unpretentious and real, RIP John you're sadly missed.
I love this band and the historical affect upon S.F. rock-acid music. None better and so far in over forty years, I find little to be impressed of other than Dave Alvin, James McMurty, etc.. but that is in another league.of Americana music....
Hearing John Cipollina still makes the hair on the back of my neck rise & sends a chill down my spine. God I miss seeing him play. I saw him play more then any other musician, almost every weekend from '66 till the '70s.
Thanks for posting. Another great moment from ther Rockpalast. I saw this video about 15 years ago in tv and can´t forget it. John was one of the best guitarists ever.
Zow.....John's sound on Happy Trails' 'Mona'...the combo of Standel Modulux, Fender amp trem, Echoplex, stereo wiring, & the way he mixed all those thru that custom switching rig. Man, would I like to nail that sound!! It's a Tremhead's dream excursion,it is. Right from those onset quavers....quavering, concentric circles of guitar waves...wow.
chorus+tremolo+modulo-everything It sounds like he's spraying echoing spires of beautiful ice across the Fillmore.
Thanks for this amazing video. I recorded this concert about 20 years ago and was so impressed by the guitar play of John. One of the best guitar players ever for me.

I saw the QMS open for The Who on August 15, 1968, in Phoenix. I can hardly remember The Who, but Quicksilver, OMG, they were transcendent. Those years were good.
this music will never date, sounds just as good in 2010,1980 when this was recorded,or 67,68,69,during the san fran HIGH TIMES,john looks so cool and sounds so good in this clip, UP THERE WITH HENDRIX,JERRY, he had the rock n roll cool of keith r ,I COULD GO ON, MISS U JOHN!!
Bravo and Amen to all the posters here. I agree with everybody here. John pulls out all his tricks. Now we can see how he did all that stuff you hear on "Happy Trails". This is such a rare and incredible performance. There is nothing on YouTube that can top this. John was a truly unique innovator and complete musician. The band does a great job backing him and letting him FLY! Thanks Aurora1957A for sharing this moment of time we shall never see again.
Thanks for posting. I wasn't lucky enough to see original QMS line-up live, and there is too little video of any kind of JC. Sadly most of the period video of all these guys is wasted showing hippie kids twirling to the music...
Damn! Why didn't I search Cipollina and Quicksilver before this? His sound and that tremolo in his voice are unmistakable. I burned-out 'Quicksilver' and 'Happy Trails' and they hold up after 40-years.
I haven't seen this before.... it's good but not awesome....what WAS awesome was being priveleged to see him play live with Man in the mid 70s - jesus....that Quicksilver twang still haunts me, Cipollina was unique,so different from all the other guitarists around during the years of the best psychedelia..... anyone younger than me checking in - get "Happy Trails".... die a death listening to the true version of MONA !
I remember this german-tv-concert like it was yesterday. I've recorded it and play it so many times, video must be somewhere on the roof... time to digitalize it ;)
John had a number of Carvins, of which this is one. Always loved going to the Music Shoppe (?) in Mill Valley before they closed to see the one they had had there (especially before seeing QS at the oldSweetwater).
YES... ALL of the Nuances, tuneweaving, technique(and hidden "FINGERPICKS!) responsible for all of the great John Cippolinas' Solo runs in " The WHO DO YOU LOVE Suite" "COBRA and "MONA" all "Up Front and Able for all us 'Aspiring "LICK STEALERS"' Who've a -ben wondering for a good time...Now, how that J. CIPOLINA Did IT! WE ALL offea Hearty THANX to aurora1957A for this GREAT (German) ROCKPLAST Footage!! All hats off!!
Nothing in life was better then standing in front of John Cipollina when he cut loose. Been hooked on him since I 1st saw QMS at the Fillmore in 1966. Went to their gigs almost every weekend until they broke up late 68' & as soon they reformed I was back until John quit the band.
John was never far from his cigarette you know.Don't remember talking to John any time when he wasn't smoking a cigarette. Without the "acceptable" addiction we would probably still be enjoying this fine musician and Man who had a heart of gold and humble mind. Bless you John we'll be together again at the NYE shows with Jerry in the by and by sooner than later. Have fun this year!!
Nice f-ing tone .....its a CARVIN DC-150 not a Gibson, Fender of Ibanez!!!!

Yeah, John Cippolina, was arguably the best of San Franciscos Acid Rock guitarists, as he never touched an acustic guitar that I ever saw .....
..... always electric!

He's completely unmistakable in style. There never has been, and never will be another guitarist like Cipollina.
