  • Nice f-ing tone .....its a CARVIN DC-150 not a Gibson, Fender of Ibanez!!!!

  • Awesome! Cip was the man! Thanks for posting!

  • As a young teenage guitarist I would put Quicksilver on the headphones and study John C's beautiful and unique playing. It still gets me.

  • you can get the whole set on dvd at Amozon: Rockpalast: West Coast Legends, Vol. 1

  • John C.

You were one of the very best in the era of the most amazing talents of the last millenium. Forgive us for not adequately acknowledging your abilities during your lifetime. "Requiescat in pace" and know that the appreciation of your talent survives your physical presence in this realm.

  • He died on my third birthday. RIP, you crazy shit.

  • I rarely say this...

    SO FUCKING GOOD.

  • Rock in Peace, John...May, 29th, 1989. Rock on, John..

  • HOT!

  • Yeah, John Cippolina, was arguably the best of San Franciscos Acid Rock guitarists, as he never touched an acustic guitar that I ever saw .....

    ..... always electric!

  • probably one of the most underrated guitarist i have ever seen R.I.P

  • @broudwauy

Chip belongs in the R&R hall of fame along with his ampstack.

    :)

  • RIP John we all miss you!!

  • Those stage divers are probably still registering as sex offenders for their two seconds of fame....

  • Love & miss you John! You were the BEST! :-)

  • Holy crap! Thank God or YouTube so talent like this can make it back out to the masses - and we won't drown in the music industry's garbage of today. tx for uploading. ; )

  • The very definition of FEELING

  • You Quicksilver fans -check out a newer song called Midnight Sun- you might like it too!JM.

  • I saw them on this tour in London at Dingwalls, it was amazing. After the show the band just hung out on the stage and chatted with the audience, unpretentious and real, RIP John you're sadly missed.

  • @SteveCounsel Isaw the RoundHouse gigs ..well two of the three nights...never been the same since...

  • Thank you for putting this up. John Cipollina was our favorite San Francisco guitarist

  • I love this band and the historical affect upon S.F. rock-acid music. None better and so far in over forty years, I find little to be impressed of other than Dave Alvin, James McMurty, etc.. but that is in another league.of Americana music....

  • simply incredible to finally get a close look at what John could do with a guitar. What happened to the great virtuosos? For me John was the best

  • JC was one of my first guitar heros! RIP.

  • nice up aurora, dam i miss him :)

  • ...check out Michael Bloomfield and friends(chipollina).

  • JC kicked ass!

  • Hearing John Cipollina still makes the hair on the back of my neck rise & sends a chill down my spine. God I miss seeing him play. I saw him play more then any other musician, almost every weekend from '66 till the '70s.

  • Bad 2 the Bone!!!

  • Thanks for posting. Another great moment from ther Rockpalast. I saw this video about 15 years ago in tv and can´t forget it. John was one of the best guitarists ever.

  • this makes some kind of biochemical brain feel good chemicsal....nice vid tnx

  • Zow.....John's sound on Happy Trails' 'Mona'...the combo of Standel Modulux, Fender amp trem, Echoplex, stereo wiring, & the way he mixed all those thru that custom switching rig. Man, would I like to nail that sound!! It's a Tremhead's dream excursion,it is. Right from those onset quavers....quavering, concentric circles of guitar waves...wow.

chorus+tremolo+modulo-everything It sounds like he's spraying echoing spires of beautiful ice across the Fillmore.

Got to get that guitar sound!

  • I saw the QMS open for The Who on August 15, 1968, in Phoenix. I can hardly remember The Who, but Quicksilver, OMG, they were transcendent. Those years were good.

  • this music will never date, sounds just as good in 2010,1980 when this was recorded,or 67,68,69,during the san fran HIGH TIMES,john looks so cool and sounds so good in this clip, UP THERE WITH HENDRIX,JERRY, he had the rock n roll cool of keith r ,I COULD GO ON, MISS U JOHN!!

  • Bravo and Amen to all the posters here. I agree with everybody here. John pulls out all his tricks. Now we can see how he did all that stuff you hear on "Happy Trails". This is such a rare and incredible performance. There is nothing on YouTube that can top this. John was a truly unique innovator and complete musician. The band does a great job backing him and letting him FLY! Thanks Aurora1957A for sharing this moment of time we shall never see again.

  • ...and shouldn't Nick's credit read? guitar/tom-tom. he can thump my floor tom anytime....

  • @Videohilden

    LOL!

I think I swiped the credits from the Rockplast website

    :)

  • John doing his best Michael Karoli impressions....!

  • Thanks for posting. I wasn't lucky enough to see original QMS line-up live, and there is too little video of any kind of JC. Sadly most of the period video of all these guys is wasted showing hippie kids twirling to the music...

  • Lucky enough to see Quicksilver before Dino got out of jail and played with the band.

  • Lucky enough to see these guys before and after Dino joined the band, great bunch of guys they were.

  • Cipollina... what a genius!

I'm fourteen, and QMS is one of my favorite bands-- John Cipollina is my favorite guitarist.

He's completely unmistakable in style. There never has been, and never will be another guitarist like Cipollina.

  • awesome.

  • cippolina! he is not forgotten after all! thanxs!

  • Damn! Why didn't I search Cipollina and Quicksilver before this? His sound and that tremolo in his voice are unmistakable. I burned-out 'Quicksilver' and 'Happy Trails' and they hold up after 40-years.

  • I need my Cipollina fix everyday. Nobody does it better.

  • I haven't seen this before.... it's good but not awesome....what WAS awesome was being priveleged to see him play live with Man in the mid 70s - jesus....that Quicksilver twang still haunts me, Cipollina was unique,so different from all the other guitarists around during the years of the best psychedelia..... anyone younger than me checking in - get "Happy Trails".... die a death listening to the true version of MONA !

  • hey thats exactly how I feel having seen John with Man at the Roundhouse..."Priviliged" we are really lucky people you know....

  • I remember this german-tv-concert like it was yesterday. I've recorded it and play it so many times, video must be somewhere on the roof... time to digitalize it ;)

  • Merci beaucoup pour cette video Aurora!!

  • o God I miss John more than any other musician .. got to meet him when I was 10 (1971) RIP John! :'(

  • ah WOW! This is rockin. Great Video!

10* . saved to favorites. Excellent!

  • Great to see all those sounds and effects recreated on a video!

  • sooo good to see the hits going up and up......how do 20 years fly by so quickly?

    PEACE TO YOU ALL ....

  • 30 years, actually ...

  • Oh, all right--let's ROCK it!

  • Thank you for posting this. It is much appreciated.

  • Fucking King.

  • great to see this still blowing so many people away...well done aurora for getting the whole track up and keeping it here..peace my friend........

    LOVE IT ...

  • couldn't have done it without your help, bro!

    :)

  • yES !!!!! SEVFEARAL TIMES IN THE EAST COAST...

  • One of the joys of being my age from the SF Bay is I got see a whole lot of

    John Cipollina.

    Thaks for this so much.

Hearing him in Action again is great.

Him w/ the real Quicksliver 65-68

    (pre-Dino's act)

    was Amazing!

He was always amazing to me.

Nobody sounded like him but him.

    Truly a all-time great player.

  • This ROCKS!!!

  • saw Quicksilver play in Golden Gate park once upon a time...Cippolina was a GIANT!

  • Great Stuff !! RIP JC.

  • YIKES! Where's the SG? I must have missed a chapter in the 'lore.....anybody know when JC and the SG parted company?

  • They never parted & were used until John left us. He had a lot of guitars & rebuilt everyone himself. He was a real craftsman with guitars & amps.

  • John had a number of Carvins, of which this is one. Always loved going to the Music Shoppe (?) in Mill Valley before they closed to see the one they had had there (especially before seeing QS at the oldSweetwater).

  • John Cippolina: a true guitar God. No one could touch him...

  • YES... ALL of the Nuances, tuneweaving, technique(and hidden "FINGERPICKS!) responsible for all of the great John Cippolinas' Solo runs in " The WHO DO YOU LOVE Suite" "COBRA and "MONA" all "Up Front and Able for all us 'Aspiring "LICK STEALERS"' Who've a -ben wondering for a good time...Now, how that J. CIPOLINA Did IT! WE ALL offea Hearty THANX to aurora1957A for this GREAT (German) ROCKPLAST Footage!! All hats off!!

  • Nothing in life was better then standing in front of John Cipollina when he cut loose. Been hooked on him since I 1st saw QMS at the Fillmore in 1966. Went to their gigs almost every weekend until they broke up late 68' & as soon they reformed I was back until John quit the band.

  • Sweet ! What a blessing to have enjoyed John playing cheap in little clubs back in the day......sigh.....

  • Gr8!******

  • Hey, Wheres the cigarette in the guitar neck???

John was never far from his cigarette you know.Don't remember talking to John any time when he wasn't smoking a cigarette. Without the "acceptable" addiction we would probably still be enjoying this fine musician and Man who had a heart of gold and humble mind. Bless you John we'll be together again at the NYE shows with Jerry in the by and by sooner than later. Have fun this year!!

  • Must have finished it and getting ready to light up again...definately has one on the go during the most of the show....

  • Awesome, Classic JOHN!!!!!!!!

Saw these guys every week in San Francisco in the 70s/80s. Memories!!!

    Thanks.

    Bless, Den

  • brilliant upload..real good choice
