"Hiding place" would be "piilopaikka". Onkalo is a large hollow space, usually underground. Cave or cavity are pretty close, though "cave" would probably be translated back as "luola".
Brilliant! Brilliant! The Onkalo intiative AND the set up of this documentary: as a letter to future generations who may stubble upon it. I really hope this gets theatrical release in The Netherlands. But I'll be pre-ordering DVDs either way.
The fact that this place is being built shows that at least in a few cases we are not just talking about cleaning up our own mess and not leaving it to our children, but we are in fact doing something.
And the fascinating thing is that it has to store waste for 100 000 years! We no little about the buildings of the Maya and that was only a few thousands of years ago! How can you make sure that mankind in 100 000 years will know how to handle what is down there? Is it the best to forget it?
There is no point in bitching nuclear power generation. There are probably hundreds of websites with millions of comments around that.
Nuclear waste is a reality. We have it in many-many countries, but this is the first final resting place!? What are the others do with their nuclear waste? Probably waiting for the next government to fix it.
After watching this we decided to do something. We opened a facebook page where we will collect messages, vote for one of them and carve it to stone close to the site. Please send you poems etc. The text will be carved 2015: facebook.com/pages/The-Message/152968481408521
Saatanan hullut vittu...Taitavat tämänkin tunnelin porauksesta päättäneet henkilöt asua pallon toisella puolella...Tuskin nekään niin tyhmiä on että omalle takapihalle ydinjätteitä kasaisivat!
Looks like a great film! Please also make a movie that explains how much it costs to demolish nuclear power plants after they have run out of their operating life time and who is going to pay for that!
Congratulations to Green Cross Denmark for supporting and promoting this great initiative. very interesting movie - provides a different perspective on nuclear waste and the fact that we need to manage this aspect regardless of our position on nuclear.
why not just take it to the moon?
airsaw123 9 months ago
@airsaw123 because of the danger of the rocket exploding on launch. it would be a disaster.

@airsaw123 What happens if the spacecraft explodes? Are we ready for the end of human era?

I find it typical that so many people worry about if onkalo is opened in 100,000 years.
I understood that by that time it should be safe. Or am I being naive?

250,000 years

@Mijnnaamniethier But that is not safe if it is opened in 20000 years, 50000 years or 80000 years.

I assume this is a non official trailer but quite like it. One small thing, I am fairly sure Onkalo means hiding place not cave.

Why dress it up as a horror/thriller-movie?
Disable the sound and plays some pop/rock-music while you see this. Much better :)

@bertelsenbo To a lot of us who care about this planet it's quite a horrific subject!
