Nice to see Johnny Marr playing some of the old songs. He gives his songs a sound that other artists, who have tried to cover them, can't duplicate. Not a bad job from Neil Finn, he doesn't try to mess with it or make it his.
Morrisseys voice is better for this song, however I will admit that violin does help add some emotion to the song, only reason this song is really good is because Johnny Marr who helped write it is jamming with him.
This is a fantastic cover. I love crowded house and the smiths but never thought the two could go together. Finn nails it, check out the dead-on stutter/warble at 1:33.
I may have commented on this before. I love Neil's voice, and at this time of his life he sounded particularly good. I love the little artistic things he does to his phrasing. This is a stunning version, and I prefer it over Morrissey singing.
Thanks for posting this so I could come back and enjoy it all over again.
I was lucky enough to hear Neil do this song live at one of his Crowded House concerts....he is an amazing musician and brings his own little brilliance to a great song.....
The one nil tour kicked off in ireland a couple of weeks later..a lot of songs he played at these gigs were one nil songs..the dvd has loads of one nil songs on it..this coincided with the release of one nil.. i think one nil was on his mind when he arranded these gigs
True but the stated purpose of holding these St. James was for charity but you're right on with the time line. I wish more of the "Try Whistlin' This" tunes would have made their way into these shows.
Any artist knows that the art is in the new music in the moment, and that embraces any changes in lyrics, leads, repeats, etc. I'm just thankful Neil is still performing. He touches the heart.
Easy to be a critic though; hell, I'm sort of criticizing you for criticizing...
alright maybe it was a bit harsh, but its a prime example of what I don't like about youtube, there was no need to post the whole chorus acknowledge the fact by all means but don't take it to that extent was what i meant.

It is totally silly at the end after he shouts he still say: "there is a light that never goes out" once again. It seems that he tried to emphazise the title of the song and he wants to be the last one of the band that finished the song...In the original at the end we enjoy the flute and J marr there is no reason to sing at the end.
Hmm... just watching the audience's reaction you know that Morrissey does it better... and yea, he messed up my favourite line... so I do not like it.
Neil Finn is notorious for making mistakes on lyrics of his own songs, so it could have been a regular mistake instead of a deliberate change in lyrics. Either way, it does work.

The audience is a great indicator... you've clearly never seen Morrissey perform this song live.... it gets crazy. The audience here appears to be asleep.
@sinestro72 morrissey's song? get a grip mate, morrissey and marr are co composers. why does only morrissey have the right to sing it, then when marr performs it it's a "cover"?
Totally disagree with you on this. Neil is a great singer with a nice vocal range and skilled nuance. Meanwhile, Morrissey's voice doesn't please my ears very much, though he has gotten better with age.
Different people like different things. I and many others happen to like Neil's version, and without it, I wouldn't have even known the original. If nothing else, think of it as a great way to introduce a very good song to new fans.
