  • my gods..........

  • in case you didn't notice, that's Johnny Marr (from the Smiths) up there

  • and I would like to take the fiddle girl out

  • definatly a better Smiths cover than most... waka waka Bam Thwok

  • I'm in heaven! Neil's voice suits Smiths songs very well.

  • Thanks Dude!! This is absolutely sublime.. Every bit as good as the original if not better!!

  • Is it from the live 7 World Collide (2001)? If so I think it's one of the finest live albums ever recorded!

  • Nice to see Johnny Marr playing some of the old songs. He gives his songs a sound that other artists, who have tried to cover them, can't duplicate. Not a bad job from Neil Finn, he doesn't try to mess with it or make it his.

  • Morrisseys voice is better for this song, however I will admit that violin does help add some emotion to the song, only reason this song is really good is because Johnny Marr who helped write it is jamming with him.

  • @Larzuthul Johnny Marr who wrote it (not helped to write it). Marr wrote the song, Morrissey wrote vocal melody & lyrics

  • I love both Morrissey and Neil Finn but this song doesn't seem to suit his fine voice.

  • DL the audio from this video at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • Infinitely better than the God awful effort of that mono-browed cunt Noel Gallagher

  • I'm sorry to say...Neil's voice is PERFECT in this song...even more enjoyabel than Morissey. Neil's voice is so flowing and lush!

  • Is that Johny Marr?! Gosh! he has good friends indeed

  • Is there anything this man can't do?

  • at 3:13 Marr approves. Gotta be something!

  • This is a fantastic cover. I love crowded house and the smiths but never thought the two could go together. Finn nails it, check out the dead-on stutter/warble at 1:33.

  • scratch that. this is really dull. don't like.

  • neil hasn't gotten anything on moz

    who does though

  • @jarvizcocker Moz hasn't gotten anything on Finn. 'Nuff said.

  • I may have commented on this before. I love Neil's voice, and at this time of his life he sounded particularly good. I love the little artistic things he does to his phrasing. This is a stunning version, and I prefer it over Morrissey singing.

Thanks for posting this so I could come back and enjoy it all over again.

  • @mydlands prefer this version too actually, obviously props to the Smiths for creating the song, but this one sounds bigger

  • I was lucky enough to hear Neil do this song live at one of his Crowded House concerts....he is an amazing musician and brings his own little brilliance to a great song.....

  • Great cover! Marr - legend!

  • Johnny Guitar Wiz Marr!!!

  • I personally prefer Matthew Caws' version (Nada Surf)

  • I feel guilty for liking this version.

  • Love this cover. This is a great song. Neil and his mates are great musicians.

  • Best cover I've heard.

  • Brilliant cover! Period!

  • Seeing Neil sing this awesome song gives me the biggest BONNER that I've ever had in my entire life!!! What a man angel!!!

  • Neill Finn is one of the best singers of our time. I know that sounds exaggerated but I mean it!

  • Neil Finn + The Smiths... I don't know how this could possibly get any better. Almost as good as the original. Brilliant!

  • this cover is really great, when I sing this song, I get very tired, I dont know why though

  • That IS JOHNNY MARR on guitar folks!

  • fuck you, one of the greatest songs ever

    ,

  • @aquaskye

but you obviously still like the song...

  • Actually one of the better Smith covers. Hey! Let those of you who criticize see if you can do better.

    Case Closed!

  • This is a great version. Marr's riffs sound great at the end. Wish O'Brien at least sang some backup.

  • Jhonny Marr est l'inventeur d'un son POP/Rock/Alternatif dont les Brits se sont inspirés durant les 20 dernière année.

  • C'mon this is a slow one... You just watch them play, listen to it... maybe tears roll down... this kind of reaction is not meant to be seen...

    Marr is playing with Neil!

  • give the guy a break! neil finn fans aren't nearly as crazy as smiths fans! a good cover all in all!

  • decent cover

  • He sings this very well compared to the many other covers.

Although i think Morrisey's voice in the original cannot be surpassed.

  • Finn is easily a peer of Moz in every way.

  • this is far superior to Noel Gallagher piss poor version. great version

  • ow wow that is i never really payed attention ha

  • crowded house got it

  • whos neil finn, hes got a good voice

  • he's from split enz and crowded house, one of the best singer/songwriters from the 80s

  • He's still one of the best singer/songwriters in the world ^_^

Thanks for posting this vid roadofrarotonga- it's great =)

  • no one can play like the smiths

  • Johnny Marr can !! I don't know if you noticed him, but he's the black haired guy playing the Gibson SG !!!!

  • Ed O'Brien looks like he has a wig on in this performance, Johnny Marr's barnet is not looking too good either :-P Still a great performance!

  • Great job Neil. One of my favorites performing another one of my favorites songs. Faithfully and well I might add.

  • is that Johnny Marr i see on the guitar???

  • you are correct sir...

  • bela interpretação, adoro essa música.

  • definitely the best song ever written

  • best love song ever, it touches the heart so directly!

  • Makes me proud to be a New Zealander this does.

  • This was from a string of shows in Auckland to promote the One Nil album.Eddie Vedder came out and did a couple of Finn songs as well.

  • Actually it was for a charity, not a promo for One Nil.

  • The one nil tour kicked off in ireland a couple of weeks later..a lot of songs he played at these gigs were one nil songs..the dvd has loads of one nil songs on it..this coincided with the release of one nil.. i think one nil was on his mind when he arranded these gigs

  • True but the stated purpose of holding these St. James was for charity but you're right on with the time line. I wish more of the "Try Whistlin' This" tunes would have made their way into these shows.

  • Any artist knows that the art is in the new music in the moment, and that embraces any changes in lyrics, leads, repeats, etc. I'm just thankful Neil is still performing. He touches the heart.

Easy to be a critic though; hell, I'm sort of criticizing you for criticizing...

  • Hey guys!

It was incredible you all together playing The Smiths "There is a light..."

    I love this song!

Neil Finn is very well singing it.

Ed O'Brien is so amazing, beautiful, sensual as always!

    Congratulations for great performance guys!

    Cheers!

    natercia

  • this is wonderful! great artists merging together...

  • How can it be crap when you have Johnny Marr playing lead guitar!!

  • @kochanski111 yes and he knows how......wtf

  • He got the lyrics wrong its meant to be

and if a double decker bus

    crashes into us

    to die by your side

is such a heavenly way to die

and if a 10 tonne truck kills the both of us

    to die by your side

the pleausure the privilige is mine

  • Oh god i didn't notice that!

    Arrogant fuck

I know that and you know that, but everyone makes mistakes yours being to quick to criticise and not noticing he got it right the second time.

  • This is a terrible post. I don't think he was criticising, but just pointing it out.

  • alright maybe it was a bit harsh, but its a prime example of what I don't like about youtube, there was no need to post the whole chorus acknowledge the fact by all means but don't take it to that extent was what i meant.

  • terrible? be glad that there are people who perform songs like this one in such a great way! it's a very good cover.

  • well done great vocals mate.

  • nice try, but...you know...

  • terrible

  • your opinion? I agree, your opinion is terrible.

  • this a great version. Stop your whining guys.

  • Quite the contrary.

  • If ever there were such a thing as White Soul, then Neil's got it in spades. His broody, melancholic style wins me over on this one.

  • "and if a double decker bus kills the both of us"....

"and if a ten ton truck

    crashes into us"...

hahaha it sounds pretty funny. Maybe we need to play in reverse the video to make sense...

  • Hmm... just watching the audience's reaction you know that Morrissey does it better... and yea, he messed up my favourite line... so I do not like it.

    -Lucas

  • what line did he mess up, out of intrigue?

  • He switched the "kills the both of us" and the "crashes into us."

  • Neil Finn is notorious for making mistakes on lyrics of his own songs, so it could have been a regular mistake instead of a deliberate change in lyrics. Either way, it does work.

  • The audience's reaction doesn't indicate one way or the other. Nice try. He messed up your favorite line? Gonna soil your pink thong over it?

  • @LucasCannon Really? Saw the Smiths 4 times in tier heyday.

  • hahaha nice.

  • learn the lyrics man!

  • Morrissey is always over emo-ing this song.

If I want dramatics, I'll watch a diva.

  • stop arguing kids.

its morrissey's song and they covered it

    for the sake of respect.

  • I think find Marr wrote everything bar the melody actually ;-)

  • ah yes and bar the lyrics :-)

  • @sinestro72 morrissey's song? get a grip mate, morrissey and marr are co composers. why does only morrissey have the right to sing it, then when marr performs it it's a "cover"?

  • I love when he shouts at the end, you can see admiration in Johnny Marr's eyes when he looks at Neil.

  • "Better than the original"?

    Are you kiddin' with me!!!

A real crap! Not even Marr saves.

The guy just doesn't know the lyrics and sing with "no emotion at all".

I saw Morrissey singin' this song...and it's 10.000.000 times better than that.

  • Totally disagree with you on this. Neil is a great singer with a nice vocal range and skilled nuance. Meanwhile, Morrissey's voice doesn't please my ears very much, though he has gotten better with age.

Different people like different things. I and many others happen to like Neil's version, and without it, I wouldn't have even known the original. If nothing else, think of it as a great way to introduce a very good song to new fans.

  • gotta agree this is better than the original. one hell of a cover.

  • yep. supersonicspringy, you are right. this is a gripping & haunting version of a beautiful, beautiful song. neil is just so wonder-full. no one quite like him.

  • i'm sorry to say, but this is a lot better than when morrissey plays the song live.

  • wot a song he more than does it justice.Only just learned that he was in crowded house. They were amazing too.The man dont look like a rockstar, more like an upperclass citizen maybe a lawyer or something but he is a genius, a truly quality songwriter too

  • what do you mean "were"? they're still making records you know

  • before crowded house he and his brother Tim were the lead singers of Split Enz. They had some zany outfits and make-up in their early days, very un-lawyer like.

  • terrific cover

    neil finn is amazing

  • A nice cover, with Johnny on guitar. If Morrissey can perform Smiths tracks at will, Marr should be allowed his share as well...
