@hertzman5 i used to work at a computer store here and the last time we ordered some hitachi hard drives (200), 92 came back from unhappy customers, most of them were doa or started to click after few days only, god nearly 50 % its awful and not acceptable at all, even maxtor were more reliable than those ''deathstar''...Of course you can blame the shipping companies instead of Hitachi for trowing boxes all around the places but why seasonic and WD works so great compared to them?
@xlegendqc87x Mmm....interesting to know that; all brands have certain % of failure, but 90% failure from an order is suspicious. I'd like to hear Linus's opinion on this.
@matthewrs7 green drives mean lower power usage, lower spindle speed which result in lower speed and higher latency from the hard drive, ''green drives'' are usually 5200 rpm hard drives so search for 7200rpm for standard speed hard drives or 10 000 rpm for high performance hard drives.
@TheGreatDefective Agreed, and for some reason I MUST find the comment out of curiosity. I usually go to "See All" and then look for it with Ctrl + F.
yh um except SATAIII is not taken adcantage of on ANY mechanical drive no matter how fast they are. that's SSD territory. manufacturers are just playing on consumers' stupidity.
It's funny you should bring that up. The Velociraptor drives are as dead as a dinosaur these days. Barely faster than a 2TB 7200RPM, yet costs several times more per gigabyte. You'd be hard pressed to notice any difference in actual usage too. For the price of the 600GB Velociraptor, you can get a 120GB SSD for your main drive and a 2TB for storage. Performance wise, this rips apart the Velociraptor.
@GTRagnarok yes, i accept this, hitachi have 3 TB and 7200 RPM, is much.. But velociraptor have 10.000 RPM, but, I was talking about speed, not space or performance
@keithpetro in case if theres hard drive failure or crash, all your 3TB data will be gone/lost, i perfer getting dual 1.5tb because it may have faster loading time for each hard drive and have extra back up space.. thats what i think
@SmallBoyzzz I guess you could also put the two into RAID for data redundancy, but don't you just keep backups? Not to mention, what if you want 6TB or 9TB? It'd be much more efficient to get 3TB drives.
@SmallBoyzzz you almost never see 1.5TB drives now. and no 2 1.5tb drives are not better 3tb is just higher density and at $130 from NCIX a 3tb drive is better value than a 1.5tb drive for $65.
@SmallBoyzzz well for starters hard drives arnt about speed thats what SSDs are for and 2 1.5tb HDDs would be faster if in RAID 0 and then they have twice the chance to fail and for you to lose all your data at once
people always cry....people always want something different.....when he unbox/reviews apple products...people cry...when he unbox/review motherboards ....people cry....when he unbox/review GFX cards...people cry.......Linus, just do what you want, thats why your channel is so great
@AnotherNutJob Yep, 2TB drives have two advantages for data safety: 1) they are cheaper per-GB so you can afford to have RAID-6 instead of RAID-5 2) they are supported by all motherboards & RAID controllers (people are still using those? Linux's mdadm is soo much better than any hardware RAID).
Its good buying a drive as cheap as a hitachi, sure performance is good but how long will it last, ive been through 2 hitachis and still havent found a reliable one, one lasted 3 years under 1 hour per week usages and the other one keeps jaming every now and then after a 1 year daily usage... FAIL, NEVER BUY HITACHI!
Id be happy with 100GB....I have 2 hard drives one windows xp and the other is windows vista both are 80GB but one only has 1.7GB free and the other has 4GB free.....I am looking for a portable hard drive that is atleast 100GB so I can take the files off both operating systems so I can get rid of the annoying low disk space notation at the bottom of the screen....its just videos ( about 20), music ( about 1,000 songs ) and a couple thousand pictures. Only pure USB powered, no wall plug mandatory
@wilburfudd you might wanna buy 1 external HDD 500gig (2.5 inch ), and 2x 500 gig HDD ( internal 3.5 inch ) in RAID1.
Raid1 = 2 hdd as 1 in windows ( mirror ) so if 1 of those 2 drives dies, you always have all the data on the other hdd, then you just buy a new drive and copy the files to it. And offcourse you have your external ( backup )
Less hard drives, more benchmarks, cases, and other cool stuff. To me (here comes an opinion, uh oh). Watching someone unboxing a hard drive has the same boring aspect as watching someone unbox RAM.
@gisforjesus i 'm agree with you, Linus should de some after-unboxing, like testing, benchmarking, and not only show us the hardware in a platic bag but to give us the feel of how it works after, like he did for the PA 246Q for example.
@thelasthallow and not the usual benchmarks, benchmarks of CPUs and GPUs that are lower end solutions, not everyone who watches these videos can afford a core i7 and an nvidia gtx 590
@gisforjesus i agree with this, but this unboxing in particular was actually useful, because I didn't know not all mobos support 3TB+ drives. if I was just about to buy one, and did not see this video, I might've wasted a lot of money
@TheJaekryl well that depends. Are you using windows xp? if so do a search for " How To Use 3TB Hard Drives On Windows XP" i found an article on ghacks dot net and i tested it personally and it worked even on my old 2004 k8n neo platinum msi motherboard xp home 32 bit edition pc. why read the article? Because by default xp CANNOT address disk space beyond 2 terabytes so you'd lose at least 700 gigs or more ( realistic guestimate). If win vista, 7 or OS X snow or Lion. np then. cheers
True dat. Im actually wondering why nobody ever said that shit out loud.?! I mean 3 TB is a lot of room to waste if the mobos can't support it.?! Im just thinking why the hell theres no QVL for 3 TB HDD... Cuz i havent seen any yet -except from the mobo Linus just showed us there.?!
