Actually shading is an attitude we mistakenly use with outlined sketch... Here we try to feel the solid thick form instead the light on the surface. We feel the weight of the form instead of the touch we use with eyes. We try to feel the form as a blind would try to recognize it. We use the turned broad pastel as our flattened hand over the object.
This is an attitude, not a technique. Drop line drawing altogether and start drawing form directly... All the best.

I used to do this! Shade without lines. Just shade the shapes.
