Jaridd I watched it this morning on MoviePlex too! I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I hadn't seen it in years and it has always been one of my favorites. Alda and Burstyn are perfection, the script is genius, and the direction wonderful. Marvin Hamlisch wrote the music and Bergman wrote the lyrics, I think. I hope they rerun it soon - I missed the very beginning and want to sit and watch the whole thing again.
Watch the movie this morning on MoviePlex and had to find out who was responsible for the music. I'm going to have this song in my head all day unless some Christmas carol can push it out.
I love the singers and song but come on, they're cruelly and selfishly cheating on their spouses for 25 years,. Only HollyRot would rationalize and glamorous a disgusting lie like this.
The only Alan Alda movie I will ever love. Wonderful premise. And there's nothing but love I have for Ellen Burstyn's character. I pray someday Hollywood will re-capture this kind of movie magic.
Something about the beautiful piano work on this one lingers ... the vocals are a little sappy for my taste ... like the way the reunions in the film mirrored the changing times ... nice posting lkwleslie.
I have been trying to find the complete set of lyrics to this song as sung in the movie. Does anyone know if they are available anywhere online? This really is my favorite movie and it so touchingly and poignantly captures the momentous historical events of the 50's, 60's and 70's. It's nearly impossible for me to watch this without it bringing a tear to my eyes.
my husband left us 3 years ago, tapos naramdaman ko nagmamahal na ako ng iba, pero ang sama saka naman nagbabalik ang asawa ko, nag aalangan na ako sa asawa ko dahil may kinakasama sya at may 3yr old son sya dun, diko naman maamin na may mahal akong iba kasi sa mata ng tao asawa ko pa rin sya.... ang sama ng pakiramdam ng ganun kainis sobra major major ika nga ni venus raj
may minahal ako...and everytime we see other..we are still in love with each other...but both of us are already committed...so this song fits us all the way....this is a love that will never die....and who knows..in the end it will be still us
I have always loved this piece....frankly it gives me chills..Johnny and Jane have such palpable musical chemistry. I for some reason didn't have time in the first half of my life to take in many movies. I will definitely look this one up. I have a feeling I've missed something special. Thank you for sharing
THis is how my husband and I both felt the first time we saw each other. We both felt the same way from the beginning but were afraid to tell the other. We became best friends and then a year later we both sat down and said okay here goes, when I first saw you I didn't even know your name, but with each time we saw each other it began to grow. We are married now and we always go back to that first moment that we saw each other and smiled.
i almost cried when i FINALLY found this song been looking this for half of my life...i am 32 now and decided to find this song when i was on first year college after listening two of my teachers...been asking all my friends they know the song but dont know the title...been looking this for youtube typing all the possible titles and finally i went to ggogle "hmmm luckily" then i discover this is the title and with a movie...thanks do much for uploading....i sound crazy but i mean it....grace
The depth of human feelings is portrayed so well in this fabulous film...great performances by Alan Alda and Ellen Bursten...Marvin Hamlishes music score is terrific...and the performances of Mathis and Olivor speak for themselves.....
...not many American films can get this close, they`re more often superficial.
Right to the jugular. Touches the heart. There are relationships built on commitments, there are relationships built on soul-mate connections. Bittersweet and honest. This song and movie embraces both concepts.

Thanks so much for posting this gem! After I saw the movie way back when I recall humming the melody as I left the theater. *Flash forward many years later to two years ago when (as an arts & enertainment celebrity profiler) I had the thrill of interviewing Johnny Mathis. The first comment out of my mouth was voicing how much I loved this beautiful ballad both then and now. Hearing my remarks, Mathis paused a second then began to sing the chorus over the phone!!!!!! I nearly fainted.
I love this movie!! I saw it at the show in the 70's and now I have it on DVD!! I am in one of these "same time next year" relationships!!! Going on our 11th year and stil in love!!!
i saw this movie by accident on HBO... i was surprised that i actually enjoyed watching it hahah. funny that this is the only soundtrack for the movie.
This will always be such a special and wonderful movie for me. the music is as enchanting as the story.
Most of all it brought the most intriguing man into my life and has showed me a love that is truly amazing. thanks for posting this. it's changed my whole life. Joanna1943
Wish we had more movies like this--- the music and movie actors did this movie justice... I will continue to view this movie as long as I can... wish they came with a sequels so I can enjoy even more.......
Great song, great movie. Anybody who has fallen in love can identify with the words of the song. And for those who grew up in the 1950s and '60s, the clips in this movie serve as the backdrop for the stories of our lives. They even mention my hometown, Oakland.
This was my story..from when I was young, got married, had kids...so similar in many ways, Then he died 11 years ago suddenly. Haven't watched the movie til tonight..had a good cry. I miss my "Alan Alda"...
hi geegarcia1 I am so glad you liked this movie. it has always been a favorite of mine I think it stands the test of time, love really is timeless. let me know if you find other movies like this one. thanks for posting joanna1943
this was one of the sweetest movies i have ever seen it's from the 70s. the song is very touching. it;s truly a lovely romantic funny heartwarming movie. with such a wonderful theme song. worth looking into joanna1943:)
I agree with you Joanna1943. I love this movie. I like the way it shows the evolution of personality with time. We are all victims to circumstance and history, this is one of the few movies that shows we change with each decade, but if we are lucky, we can always find something to fall in love with even in those who "knew us when."
Yes, this is a fantastic movie. It's even more moving if you have lived through the years that it covers. It does a lovely job of capturing the passage of time and how relationships can endure. Sadly, I am a hopeless romantic. :-)
I only saw this movie after Jane and Johnny sang this song at the Oscars that year...I just wanted to hear the song again. I bought the DVD years ago and it has a few more verses on it than the commercial cut. But, loved the movie, too. Watch it the same time every year.
Sissy-i wish it were the smae time last year-you would be alive and here with us-I miss you sooo-be at peace and in no more pain my seet angel sister-I will forever remember and love You-your one and only sis
I saw this movie the first time when I was a child - and I loved it, watched it again and again. That was more than twenty years ago.
Years after that I experienced this feeling myself - being strongly attracted to someone and helplessly fall in love, against all plans, against all reason. A force that is stronger than us. It just happened, I couldn't help.
This song reminds me of it, of this magical feeling.
God I know what you mean...I am experiencing that very feeling now. I have fallen helplessly in love with someone against all plans, reason, logic! Believe me...it happens. The minute he held my hand, I knew I was home...only to no place I've ever been before. I have felt guilty because I love my husband and he passed away, and now I love this person and it is such a deep love, I cannot describe it!
I Remember reading the Script in my senior year in HIgh School..........30 plus years ago ...................and can now really appreciate the first magical moments of falling in love. The music is perfection!

@verrette1 Verette, It still chokes me up too :) Here is the verse missing from the posted lyrics:
Dreams make promises they can't keep
They can swindle you while you sleep
And the morning finds you wondering why
It seems, when we're young in dreams we trust
Maybe growing up is just
kissing certain dreams good bye
Enjoy, John :)
