I never liked the ending to this game. I felt there should have been more than just a blimp and the credits, given how hard Krang and Shredder were to beat. I remember I had a cheat code for this game that allowed you to jump from level to level. Up, down, left, right before the opening credit kind of thing.

One time I was fighting Shredder, my partner ran out of lives, and I was down to one, so I was getting rid of the fakes because my ko count was 596 at that point. Shredder stopped when I was at 599, and killed me. GAH!!

I used to play this with my dad when I was like 5. He would beat the shit out of the final boss to an inch of his life and then discreetly hold back, so that I was the one defeating Shredder and winning the game at the end. I loved that man.

2 1/2 lives? Not good against Krang. Go up or down so he can't hurt you, then jump kick away to get some distance from him. He will fire when you are lined up with him. Know when he is about to fire a beam. Jump over the laser and kick, then give him a quick slash. If you are quick enough, you can follow up the kick with a special attack instead. Remember he'll never kick right after firing a laser.

Krang was the easiest boss in the arcade, well...not the only one, Baxter is easy too (if you can consider him a boss fight ). It had a very simple pattern, hit him and take one step back, then hit him again. With a little practice and a few coins you could've beaten him without losing any power. I see that in the NES he is a lot faster and retaliates a lot...

To me the first TMNT game is only hard if you play the bastardized ports of the game like the Commodore 64, DOS or Amstrad CPC ones. There are a few others but they're all horrible ports too. Just yesterday I beat the NES version easily, didn't lose a single turtle, I also didn't cheat. But enough of my "bragging".

@jplaya2023 Maybe you're just not that coordinated....the trick to beating the game is knowing how to jump out of the way and using the A+B attack. Shredder was hard because he'd throw that ray that would kill you instantly. I could never get past that for some reason.

The cheats are done in the title screen. To get extra lives with stage select you press "B, A, B, A, Up, Down, B, A, Left, Right, B, A, Start". If you do it correctly there should be a stage select screen after choosing a turtle. To get lives without stage select press "Up, Right, Right, Down, Down, Down, Left, Left, Left, Left, B, A, Start". Your "REST" should show 9 lives.

lolz i couldn't resist and played one more time. krang is apparently MUCH easier to beat if you try to kick him very low, into the legs. then his followup kick won't hit you. so as usual: kick leg, jump up immediately, kick leg from the other side, jump upo immediately, kick leg from otehr side, etc. this sometimes allowed me to kick him up 10 or so times without ever getting hit. just a bit hard to keep up the concentration ebcause he takes so much damage

ok my turtles game is working again and playing through it was easy, but i couldn't beat the stupid shredder bastard anymore :( it seems you HAVE to let him respawn thrice, otherwise the remaining one with helmet takes infinite damage. stupid game. grr

sorry i'm a fool. played thru the game a 3rd time now, and of course you don't have to let him respawn. it just takes quite a few hits to beat the last guy with the helmet, but that's just normal, it's a boss after all....

I agree Krang is hard but Shredder was so easy once you got over the method of moving up or down. Try to jump kick him everytime, he'll stay in the same position. You don't even need to move up or down to attack him. Just throw your jumpkicks and he'll be a piece of cake.

For me, Krang was a piece of cake...or in this case Pizza. But Shredder was a son of a bitch to defeat. You not only had to beat one Shredder, but two of them. Especially when he fires off that ray gun which was instant death. But eventually I ended up beating him..though it took forever.

i played & beat this game lots of times when i was 10. krang is rather tough because he reacts fast so if you kick him, he'll likely kick you back before you can escape. shredder is weak but his respawn trick is really frustrating at first

I've been trying to beat this game off and on for 18 years. I vow to beat it this week finally. I can get to Shredder but Krang always takes at least 1.5 life bars away and I just don't have enough to do Shredder. I made it once with 4 lives and he insta-killed 3 of them almost immediately. e_e

God, this is the first videogame i ever played so naturally, it brings back a lot of memories. Man, it makes me feel old. Back when i was about 4 or 5. I'm bloody 18 now.

I never managed to get this far though. The furthest i could get was defeating Rocksteady in stage 1. Kept getting my ass kicked by Bebop in stage 2.

I might try getting an emulator to play it again. See how far i could get now lol.

Krang's theme is awesome. Good thing, too, as he is in my opinion the game's toughest boss - he blocks out so many of your attacks, and my it seems to take forever to make him vulnerable. Shredder seems positively easy afterwards - as long as you avoid his electric, instant-death beams.

i just beat this today. i used the jump kick against him and only died giving up one life and 3 health bars. then only gave up one more life at shredder. u don't get hit as much.

I think the region detection is automatic on my emulator, and I don't see a reason why change it. Both PAL and NTSC are alright with me.

PAL is significantly slower compared to NTSC, but that's how the games worked back then. I live in a PAL region, but I have a couple of NTSC games, which are much faster.

ye. mine's PAL too. and games are in NTSC by default. i use Nestopia. it has an option to change them to PAL and overwrite the old rom file

NTSC feels too fast for me, especially in forms of music. If you set your emulator to PAL (if you can), it will play exactly as the cartridge would play it (at least in Europe).

This game definitly brings back some memories..before i learned a method i used to get nailed by shredder electic mutagen ray. but it was one of harderst TMNT game i played over th years. i laso recall at the end of TMNT 'fall of the foot clan' on gameboy the same message appears at the end of the game.this game was released a few months in 1990. good times..

They were, much harder. Most of the games nowadays usually rely mostly on graphics, there isn't much effort in making the games challenging, probably because it would drive away some other games that don't like to play hard games. They really should look back on the older games and make a game that has a good difficulty level, great gameplay and an awesome NES-style soundtrack.

Well, Shredder has that deadly ray, but if you know how to dodge it, then it's gonna be a lot easier. If you're having trouble dodging the ray, then you're probably having more trouble in Shredder. Usually when I try to beat this boss, I lose more lives in Krang than in Shredder.

Good work, but i think that the only way to beat krang without taking so much pounding is by air kicking him, just right after he shoots his eye beams and then jump away to dodge his kick or punches, just as you were doing. But lower attacks will only result into losing a lot of energy.

Yeah, jump kicks are probably one of the easiest ways to deal with all the bosses, the only problem is the timing, and I really couldn't spare much time on it, as you could see that it already took almost the 10 minutes, and I wouldn't have liked to make it a two-parter.
