I have heard this argument in real life. I worked in a Mexican owned factory for 22 years. Most of the workers there were Mexican nationals (who entered illegally) and they resented the fact that non- Mexicans were allowed to work there. When asked why they didn't go back to Mexico if things were so bad, they would answer that they would have no jobs and their children would starve. They wanted us to leave so that this place could be more like Mexico. Huh?
