  • I finally figured out how to put Windows 98 on my Dell Dimension XPS, so I wanted to let you know so maybe you could try it. What I did was formatted the hard drive with a Windows XP disc, since I figured out that the formatter was the problem with 98 not installing. After that I just told it not to format during the 98 setup, and it installed fine! Tell me if that works

  • christ almighty feel sorry for you having to use that

  • @jackzvid If you watched more of my videos, then you probably wouldn't jump to conclusion like that! This isn't my main computer. It's way to slow to do anything regular today, like watch YouTube videos.

  • You know what's weird? I can't install 98 on my Dell Dimension either. Do you have any idea why? I'm still stumped.

  • I have a very similar model, except mine might be from 1999, I'm not quite sure. Mine is an XPS T600. Dells were very, very good in the 90s, I love them.

  • @duranmedine Yeah, and probably not for much longer lol

  • @Mrtechguy94 It still works.

  • i have a xps m200s

  • Try Windows XP Performance Edition. It is made to run fast on 256 MB of RAM and is very very fast at its minimum.

  • I just came back from the thrift store and I bought A Dell Dimension XPS for 13 BUCKS!!!!

  • @delliswierd Nice

  • @computerkid1416 lol the biggest problem was no memory though!:)

  • I'll but that from you! I could use that as a firewall for my network!

  • if the processor is slot 1 you can upgrade to a slot 1 p3 and then you can put xp on it.

  • How about puting linux on your old pc. Dam small linux would be good. or maybe even puppy linux. You could still surf the web with those and other things as well. I was going to say I just updated my Dell Dimension xps T500 to T700r. But win I see yours was 233mhz dam thats slower than mine :). Nice job Keeping it a live.

  • @thebighat99 I have never used the Linux operating system in my life and I have no desire to start. And yes, it is very hard to kill these computers. They were built like tanks!

  • @Mrtechguy94 i will never use linux either. =) Windows XP!

  • is that a dell dimension r450 XPS???

  • No, It's a Dell Dimension XPS D233

  • o mine sucks lol. intel pentium 2 300 MHz. how can i overclock a intel pentium 2??? please answer

  • You don't want to overclock your computer's processor because you can damage the processor. But if you really want to, then you have to find the jumper on the motherboard and place it in the config section. After that, start the computer and it should automatically go into configuration mode. Then you can set the processor speed. Again, I don't recommend doing this because you can damage the processor. Also, it wouldn't even make a huge difference in the processor speed if you overclock it.

  • wat do u mean by jumper??? i just heard ppl saying overclocking ur processor can make ur speed better. so i just wanted to try i got 2 fans my Power supply unit fan and my back fan. my processor doesnt have a fan my processor is like a huge heat sink by itself. kinda old processor lol.

  • To make it easier to explain, I'll make a video of it. Stay tuned.

  • ok send me link :P

  • You say that your machine will be obsolete right? I have 2 Pentium 1 MMX pc's those are what you called obsoulete. I still use them though. I also have a Pentium 2, 3 & 4. How fast is the CPU in there? I have a Pentium 3 running at 450MHz with 256MB of RAM and I got XP installed. Works great. You say you couldn't get Windows 98 to work on there, whats the problem? I'm pretty good when it comes to pc problems since I am looking into becoming a pc repair tech.

  • The CPU in this computer is 233MHz. The maximum RAM is 384Mb. This machine will run Windows XP pretty good, but the problem is that if more software is installed such as Norton AntiVirus would slow it down. Or if I install Serivce pack 2 or something like that. I don't plan on installing Windows 98 anymore because Windows 2000 runs excellent on this machine. Thanks!

  • You should try Firefox. I'm pretty sure at least Firefox 2.x still works in Windows 2000.

  • You can use the latest FF with Win2000

The sw support is still pretty for Win2000

  • @vwestlife I have the newest version of Firefox on my Dell Dimension with Windows 2000. It runs kind of slow, but it still works, and it's better than Internet Explorer 6.

  • It's funny how Windows 98 and 2000 often doesn't identify your computer's CPU correctly and just displays technical gibberish on the System Properties screen.

You should try Firefox as the web browser. I know older versions of Firefox work fine in Windows 98 (both original 98 and 98SE) so it should still have good support for Windows 2000.

  • @vwestlife Windows 2000 does show the processor. Windows 98 doesn't.
