Very sad! Not looking forward to the Chinese motor car increasing in popularity solely based on its price. You pay for what you get.
For the record, my Father lost his job overseas as a British Leyland factory trained mechanic. That said, I drive a Land Rover and wouldn't have it any other way ;-)
this is so sad, i can't believe how people put engand strips, and union jacks on stuff and then fall over themselves to buy pretty much anything that originates from country that was trying to bomb longbridge 70 years back, what bullshit.
Yet more of our heritage wiped from existence.Labour,in their recent rule, introduced taxation on empty industrial buildings, owners of such buildings now have to pay tax even if they are not in use.The majority of owners realising that it would be a long time before such buildings might see use again decided it would be cheaper to demolish them. This pleased the gov as land was freed up for shitty housing.Where these tennants are going to work hasn't been considered, though most have never worked
thats a heartbreaking video...longbridge was one of the uk's biggest car manufacturing plants.......and thanks to the germans.........its all gone..............we may have won the war ......but the basterds got us back in the end!
i live in longbidge nd as i am writing this there is a lump in my throat wich will always be there after seeing how much the plant has canged i have lived here for over 30 years and its amzing that i am not the only person out there that lives up to rover and that there are more people out there who remember the beaty of the place.
What is it with these people who put a Union Flag on their BMW Minis? Honest to God, they do my fruit. And they call it a feckin Cooper! The Genius that is John Cooper died before they were even thought of....grrrr! And I'm not sorry for what I did to a Union Jack covered BMW 'Mini'....I saw grown men cry over what BMW did...and that ignorant git looked like he could afford a respray. Ha!
But taxing imports..... has other problems. I'd agree with taxing finished goods but not raw materials or components. They key is taxing selective imports from specific countries. There is no escaping the need for a managed economic policy which ultimately protects those industries you have chosen for 'life' rather than death....because as British Leyland found out.. death comes quickly and irreversibly.
Let's remember Unions run by communists are not concerned at all about destroying the country..in fact the DROOL FOR IT.. because out of the ensuing chaos they believe the 'dictatorship of the proletariat' will arise. HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAH.. what...a...JOKE! they would still be faced with the 'Dictatorship of CHINA' which would make it impossible for any industry on their union marxist utopian dream to survive.
Only by TAXING slavery and forced low labor rates can you protect your industry.
I believe it is possible to 'make it' in the West as a manufacturer, but not if you have to employ Western (in my case aussie) labor. The simple fact is.. UNIONS in their zeal for a "better deal for workers" have in fact trashed the whole arena and within a few years NO ONE of those "workers" wil have a job. The unions are like a drug.. in order to keep giving you the 'high' they have to keep promising MORE... there is an end point.
we only have ourselves to blame- we didnt want to buy rovers for the simple reason the designs of the cars were outdated compared to renault and even fucking seat for christ sakes!
BMW were the other party in blame - they bought rover for one reason and one reason only; they wanted the mini
Blame the accountants.. There was real engineering talent within those companies who were not allowed through financial constraint to fully develop the ideas/designs they had..
if british leyland didnt touch rover it would be ok,though look pack at the p4 p5 and p6 then they ruined the rover anyway look at the horrible sd1 BL made, that is rubbish, also they really ruined jaguar! austin and morris was already rubbish though truimphs were ok,
minis were alright BL made it worst! look at the lovely MG with chrome bumper they through they through rubber on it! they ruined everything!
tHIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN GOING DOWN HILL FOR YEARS, WE INVENTED UPTEEN ITEMS THAT RUN THE WORLD,BUT WE ALWAYS GET PUT DOWN, SOLD OFF OR SHUT DOWN AND MOVED TO FUCKIN CHINA FOR CHEAP LABOUR..IT WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT US SOON ,AS THIS CHEAP SHIT FALLS APART SO QUICKLY.RIP..GB..
@SpeedTriple59 Hi mate. I"m a small manufacturer in Australia. I send as MUCH work as I can to China. Why ? Because I have to compete with finished goods made IN China.. and if I paid Aussie metal bashers or circuit board makers their demanded rates.. I would not compete and would go broke.
These days, you can get top quality materials from China based on a few emails... I have credit from a circuit board maker.. they send the goods.. then I pay. I just add value by making a product.
@BritNet001,,, dead right ..bang on..these so called rover workers crying over the past ,,they hated it when they worked there(and yes i did work there) every one was a bad back merchant ,they wouldnt speak to each other all day but when the hooter went theyd run out ..and bib there hornes at each other and wave ,,utter dick heads..if i had a factory id go to China ,,GOD ONYA MATE
@SpeedTriple59.... Haaa Haaa you say that from the home of the 1100 the rott box mini the allegro that used to crab down the road sideways the rover with its cylinder head blowing every 6000 miles cos the lazy shit on the tracks wanted another tea break and couldnt be bothered to tighten it down..its gone cos it was shite and the people who worked there didnt give a shite...and hardly anybody in the area worked there ,they were all from the black country,,good riddance,
The rover 75 is a fanastic car, everything about it is just right, 4/5 stars for safety rating, smooth, powerfull, good mpg, cheap insurance what more could you want?
I am in my 40's I have driven saab's, Mercs, nissian etc etc.
And i can truthfully say that my 75 is the best out of the lot.
The very sad thing is is that britian will never be great again, the government, combined with the people of britains ignorance and complacency have ensured that we are doomed to financial collapse, the trade deficit for the UK economy is now massive and we are living on borrowed time. Mark my words we WILL be a third world country within 10 years, the evidence if this is already showing, look around you
They never had the cash mate, thats why they had to make do with Honda cast offs and being effectively raped by BMW for the last 25 years! BL was knackered along time ago, since the 70s really!
even the british police forces and emergency services including councils etc insisted on sending tax payers money abroad by buy all manner of German, french, japanese and american vehicles for their fleets, completely ignoring british made products... THIS GOVERNMENT IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS IN EVERY CONCIEVABLE WAY!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A Volvo T5 estate has to be better than the Rover 75 estate otherwyse the police would have used them for Motorway work. Face it, Rover is gone because it's products were far inferior to other manufacturers. The British public have voted by buying other marques and I for one would never by anything from the MG Rover group. Even when they start selling it again here in the UK. People are buying more cars from Kia and Hyundai than they were buying Rovers and MG's. Let the negative comments begin.
As i have said earlier, its people like you who have killed the british motor industry off for good, Rovers had their faults (dont all cars) but they were characterful and interesting cars onthe whole, they were also well built and BRITISH... Wheres your pride man???
Your exactly right. When the Police were looking for a suitable car, I'm sure character was top of the agenda. Grow up mate. I'm glad your a car enthusiast but open your eyes and look at MG Rover for the business it was. It's got nothing to do with the government. It's all to do with the public. My pride as you call it is with a damn good luxury car maker called Lexus. I don't see them going bust any time soon. Untill anyone can comment sensibly about this, I'm ignoring all other comments.
Your probably going to ignore this but there you go! Britain is only the country it is with peoples pride and hardworking attitudes towards the products the UK produces, we, as a country do not now make anything to be proud of because nobody cares anymore... so go on everyone, send your money abroad and see what happens to the UK economy... FOOLS
I agree with this also. You people don't buy from your own people, your government does not support UK manufacturing as ours does, and people have in general wrong attitude towards what my british associates call manufacturing "not needed" and say you have a "finance and retail" economie. You can't sell retail abroad, you can sell products abroad, so you suffer when credit goes away like in current problems. It is common sense as you british are so fond of saying
its a good point and weel made but think of this. I run a small business and because of my hege bottom end expenses ( wages, gas and water etc ) which are all both generic and business specific, Im left with no money to expand. MG Rover could have been that Lexus you are driving if it werent for our glourious cock up of a government
Google earth to see how big an area it covered.

Thats the trouble nowadays, nothing is built to last.
If it breaks down throw it away....not me, my oven has just packed up, had a quick scan and bought a new part for £20.
A lot of people would just throw it away and buy a new one!

Rover should have been saved. They saved Northern Rock eh when they had to?.
the UK government would rather put its own people on the dole.
Rover did have replacements ,look elsware on utube for the prototypes. and far better looking than the renault/citroen junk out now
and yes i own an MG SVR and a 45, absolutely fantastic cars. the mini died when BMW moved out.
it is now a BMW and not a mini
