I like the more discreet look of this one but if you're pointing it up to bounce off the ceiling you're going to loose considerable light power as the light has to pass through the semi opaque plastic. This means your flash has to work harder, will get hotter and the batteries will run out sooner. With the Gary Fong it's open at the top (unless you put the diffusion lid on) so the light can travel straight up unhindered.
@kieranmullen2 - Not really. It's VERY well made, and after having used it for a month or so now, I can tell you it's my favourite flash diffuser. Works great. Wouldn't want to be without it.
think u should shoot some photos with the"thing" before u review the products, or name it the "Mother of All Flash Diffusers". Be fair. We all know u good "Buddies" with PeterGregg....
I found this channel a couple of weeks ago and i LOVE it... Great to find a youtube channel dedicated to photography and stuff.... Keep on! ... BTW: why you disable ratings on your videos?
Woah, $99.99 for that thing? I suspect that there will soon be a ton of similar products from an unnamed country in Asia that will be selling for $15 right next to the tupperware- looking diffusers that appear to be almost exact copies of products made by the unnamed brand.
I'll say this diffuser is useless, Why? cause the flash gun has its own articulated head, besides, this tiny sphere cannot produce wide enough field of light
I think the best diffuser ever is Gary Fong's Lightshere!
@waynejericho89 - The bigger the light source, the softer the light. As I said in the video, you can use the FlashRight to bounce the light off a wall to your left, right, or behind you, and you have one HUGE light source... the wall. Works very well. I've done it for years with bounce cards, but the FlashRight makes it even easier.
@ArtoftheImage diffusors are made for situations where you don't have white walls (though they do give somewhat better result). I used Lightsphere also (on my 580ex before they stole my camerabag) - in combination with an wide angle lens, it gives stunning results when you point it directly. Size is all that really matters.
Not sure if I will go back to Lighsphere though... will probably switch to Nikon also.
@waynejericho89 ur absolutely right.. First this is not a "Diffuser" its a light bouncer its "Bouncing" light.." to get soft look The hype about it being the best diffused light is imposssible with that Light "Surface Area" No matter how soft modifier is. "Size" of surface area is very small and will produce barely a slightly more softer light than a direct flash. You can use a standard flash head pointing and bouncing it just like this thing. On the Gary Fong I have to dissagree
@rmstudio Very true, sch a small light source doesn't make for great de-fusion and to add to what you say it is actually in fact just a bouncer!
Talking like you know what talking about helps a little, I have a GF in my humble opinion the best in modifiers, looks like Tupperware but if your a pro, how it looks make no difference, proof is in the taste!!
@ron57405 - Yes, I am good friends with Peter. Doesn't mean he doesn't make excellent products. I've seen many photos done with the FlashRight, and I've seen how it works so I know it does a great job. I will be showing some sample photos soon as I said in the video.
@ArtoftheImage I will say this though about your friends product he used the mounting system from Gary Fongs system LoL. Which I find pretty dam funny considering usually its the chinese stealing all our designs and ideas this time it was a American Stealing the chinese products design... The irony in it with a gary fongy product is honestly down right hilarious.
hey Matt. i dont mind you doing a plug for Peter's FlashRight, i bought one myself. i just hope you will give a honest review of it. in the end i think you will. can wait. thanks
I just saw a couple of sell out reviewers try to sell this unrealistic review. You can never get any softlight from small thing. It is physically imposible. The bigger the light source, the softer the light.
@venuslnd - Yes, that's correct. The bigger the light source, the softer the light. As I said in the video, you can use the FlashRight to bounce the light off a wall to your left, right, or behind you, and you have one HUGE light source... the wall. Works very well. I've done it for years with bounce cards, but the FlashRight makes it even easier.
.....is is just me or is this diffusor completely useless?? :/ I'm just sayin, the fact that ur flash came with a diffusor and you can point that in any direction, all you would be getting from this one is...ur flash in the shape of a ball
@Velli1987 - No, the FlashRight allows for a lot more creativity with your lighting by allowing you to control the direction in which it's coming from. The diffuser that comes with the Nikon flashes spreads light all over the place.
@alreacon - Yes, you can shoot the flash straight on. The FlashRight diffuses the light and angle it slightly up so that it's a more flattering light.
Was that a dig at Mr. Fong??? LOL. It looks interesting. Looking forward to the review. I just got my sb-900 and sb-700 so I'm looking forward to my CLS work.
Matt, my FlashRight arrived Monday and I am looking forward to putting it through its paces as well. I subscribe to your site and Peter Gregg's site and appreciate all the great tips both of you offer. However, I own one of the "tupperware" units and I have enjoyed excellent results. No one has called my diffuser "weird". There is room for both in my bag.

WOW that thing looks absolutely ridiculous. Anything other than a basic diffusion dome is just unnecessary. Get the flash off the camera either way.
