As much as I love Brian, he can't sing anymore, and if he does it will take away from the song this band is playing. Looks like he's just there more as a show piece...Like here's genius Brian Wilson. Maybe some naive people in the audience thinks it's still him singing falsetto and thinking...wow, he's still got it!
@nimaside You must be a complete idiot to think he can't sing anymore. It's obvious he's not singing falsetto in this clip. Have you listened to the Gershwin record? Have you listened to Smile? It's definitely him singing, and it doesn't take away from the song the band is playing. And yes, I'm well aware of what the studio can do in post...Watch some more youtube videos of live performances...I'm not naive, I can admit he doesn't sound like he used to, but he's still got it.
That's harsh. Brian Wilson does not seem like an easy person to interview. And what the hell is he doing towards the end looking up to the ceiling? Reading the words?
@3:07 "Do you still enjoy touring, then?" - This woman clearly knows NOTHING about her interview subject. "Still?" Brian hated touring so much at one point that he stopped appear live with the Beach Boys for over two decadess! And she asks if he "still" likes it!
I second gilesk's comment, this program is "offensively bad"
@mmanville75 The way Brian says, "Yeah, yeah," it's almost like he's thinking, "What a stupid question." Of course, the presenters are oblivious enough that he could've said exactly that and they wouldn't have known what he meant.
Definitely one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, the man is a living legend to say the least. Sad he doesn't get the respect and treatment he deserves all the time.
The One Show is a goddamn disgrace and should be severed from the BBC like a gangrenous limb. Brian Wilson could be the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. He is an elusive legend and these two buttheads treat him like he is Lionel Blair.
Brian Wilson still has that honest boy quality to him. Like when he blurted out, I was too scared to do that. I'm so glad he is still around. Not to mention he sings exactly like Carl which keeps the music alive.
these presenters are NAFF!! pure morons. all they do is read off cuecards most likely. doubt they know who half their "guests" are. I've seen them interview Phil Collins & The Monkees and neither of them looked interested to be there.
@mikemacjunkie1 They call them presenters in england in the US they call them talk show hosts some of the talk show hosts are musicians like steve allen played piano brian wilsons daughter carnie had a talk show shes a singer merve griffin was a singer mike douglas was a singer johnny carson played drums
You know that is a really mean thing to say about Brian...being mentally 8 or 9 years old. It doesn't matter what the man wants to talk about or how often he talks or how long his answers are or if he stays on the subject or not. If Brian talks you listen, shut the hell up and wait for him to finish.
i doubt these two interviewers know they are talking to a living legend. but our brian soldiers on regardless. what would you ask brian if u had this once in a lifetime opportunity?
@briney1973 i'd ask him to have on last go at smile. back together with the others. one more attempt to finish the masterpiece. i know smile sessions is as close to it as we can imagine but ive got a feeling theres something brian wilson would have done in the final production to make it perfect.
Beautiful to see Brian's eyes sparkle with so much love and life. I'm glad I got to live long enough to see Brian live long enough to work through his challenges to bring him to a peaceful place. Thank you Brian, for all the love and the songs.
So so glad to see him still around and functioning. Sad to see this may be his last tour - but marvelous to see the respect he is getting as a "grandfather" of today's music. Love the music, Thank you very much. Brilliant.
@Kalle72 seems laughable.. like parts of the interview and poor Brian in his dotage. Maybe it is BBC channel 1 ... Is that Sean Connery in your photo or an old you at age 26?? regards from Virginia, USA
I'd find it a lot offensive, to me personally, let alone Brian, if the interviewers weren't talking to him as if he were an eight year old foreign boy unable to speak English and has lost his mummy.
Shame he has to put himself through such drivel. The guy's written some terrific stuff in the last 20 years, but these kind of superficial shows simply aren't interested. If only he could respond like Sandie Shaw used to every time she kept asked about Puppet on a String/Eurovision win. ("Boring" was her common response). No, Brian's not quite the alert, sparky guy he once was but asking the same dumb, lame questions hardly helps the situation. Does he really need this type of crap anymore?
Matt is asking BW what it was like growing up in the 60's. Guess he doesn't know much beyond the few notes he was given on the guy before they went on air.
The BBC think it's neccesary to totally ruin things with the most patroniising and lame writing I;ve ever heard."Alex: "Tonights main man is an all American Dude" Who the hell talks like that?
Would Jules Holland introduce Brian Wilson that way on LATER
you just dont know how that song in my room means to me.first i came into myroom when i was 5yr old and i lived my hole life here..i have lost my mom in 95 in my room i have felt every thing thatis to feel in my room and i havehad three women in my life and had a baby girl.so my room is powerful.and as of 45 i am still in my same room when i was 5yr old... so how powerful is that???/?
I always think of Brian as this era's Beethoven--a real genius, despite all he has gone through. I'm glad they didn't have shows like this in Vienna in 1824 though.
I only just found this 'interview' on YouTube. However I'd just like to say in future, the next time you're lucky enough to have the world's greatest living songwriter in front of you, try and employ someone who asks good questions and will let him get a word in edgeways as opposed to the two talentless fuckin potzers you've used here. In other words, have the good grace to have him on something better than the One Show. Thank you, that is all
@TheChairsniffer If they had Mozart sitting in front of them they'd probably ask, "What is it like wearing a wig?" If I was next to Brian Wilson I could ask him enough questions to last for a week. "What was it like in the 60s?" definitely wouldn't be one of them.
@TheChairsniffer et al. This is a bad prime time TV programme anyway. The researcher's fault, although if I were the presenter I would have done more homework instead of asking silly 'stock' questions. Then again, if I was in front of Brian, I would probably stutter too..
@TheChairsniffer. Spot on. Brian Wilson is one THE greatest song writers of the last 60 years. He had an immense influence on music in the 60's and beyond. Pet Sounds is possibly THE greatest album ever recorded. He should have been accorded the respect he deserves and asked questions that his immense work deserves. A HUGE missed opportunity.
@TheChairsniffer It's not really their fault. Someone probably should have prepped them and let them know that Brian is kind of awkward when it comes to interviews.
This is painful. What complete numptys the interviewers are. They should at least know thier subject before interviewing him. They should be bowing down at his feet.
And in defence of the One Show hosts, this isn't exactly an indepth music show, or even an indepth show, just a light magazine-style show. The hosts probably weren't particularly knowledgeable on Brian's history or his trials and tribulations, perhaps told by the producer he wasn't very talkative or something, and to keep it simple, and cover any blanks with inane chatter.
Quite upsetting to watch, he just seems so out of it, however when you think about it, for someone not particularly good at giving interviews, what he says is considered. He's giving credits to the Wrecking Crew, which should be commended anyway.
@gilesk It's really not that bad. The interview with Brian is what can be expected. He's like a 8-9 year old mentally. Musically he is a genius. For show hosts it really hard to do interviews with people like Brian. They give one-word answers and don't stay on subject. All things considered I think the hosts did an okay job with Brian. But you have to love Brian. A real survivor and still going.
I don't know if I would blame the two hosts. Bri speaks and moves almost like a disabled person. It's almost a natural reflex action to talk in a slow, super-"oh wow!" way. I know it's great and all that BW is up and around, but he's had great image management over the last 10 years.Having him finish Smile and perform with a huge backing group makes it appear that "Brian is back" but the fact is he is completely on another planet now. Notice he doesn't even write new songs anymore? Just covers.
This makes me totally cringe watching these two idiots attempting to ask Brian stuff. I just cannot watch it. They are arseholes and the whole thing has been made uncomfortable. They are talking to him like he is a freak or some unknown...makes me so angry.
@paisleygerry Too true – what a dismal pair of lightweight cretins. The BBC - another reason to feel gutted about what Britain has degenerated into. On a more positive note Denny Tedesco (son of Tommy) who has done so much work to produce The Wrecking Crew documentary says that in general the British are more informed and respectful than the Americans (I’m a big Hal Blaine fan myself).
Didn't the interviewers do ANY research on interviewing Brian? Knowing how difficult an interview he is how do you ask him something as broad as 'what was it like in the 60s'? Who could even answer that question well, let alone Brian Wilson.
@fftozer Agreed that the hosts should have know what they were getting into here. Also have to criticize his handler/wife Malinda and his reps for ever putting Brian in front of a microphone (in a non-music capacity). Bri ain't living on Planet Earth anymore and hasn't been for about 35 years.
worst hosts. who gives a fuck about what british talk show hosts think, cuz they don't. it's like sitting with bach and then commenting about my sweater.
In response to criticism of the interviewers: Brian Wilson is notoriously difficult to interview. You could literally get through 30 questions with him in 15 mins or less. He gives the shortest of replies and often answers in ways that don't lead onto anything.
those inteviewers are such dumbasses. so annoying!! brian seemed nervous and these guys probably had no idea who these guys even were! their paid to talk, not to know anything!! script monkeys!! brian was fantastic live. saw him in canada. AMAZING!
