I was lucky enough to have known Shawn well enough to have been to his house a number of times, I still have a cassette that he made and gave to me in 1992 that has this song on when he had just wrote it.
@mick853 You sure you're telling us the truth? If so, it's kind of surprising that you'd say Shawn gave you the tape "right after he wrote it"; Shawn would never have told anyone he wrote this song, since Jimi Hendrix is the actual songwriter.
Well his fingers are in shape.... That cat can really run scales. Nice how he bounces back into tasty blues mode from time to time. My guess is he listened to a bunch of EJ.
If you mean Eric Johnson, I doubt it. He has been a staple in great guitar since the early seventies. For those lucky enough to hear him then. I knew Shawn from Arkansas, he was wild. Sad loss. Peace on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

All I want to know is: where is the crossroads where I can sell my soul to play like this?

The last fast part sounds like finger nubs. It's crazy and deceiving to the ear. Awesome!

Maybe the other way around...maybe EJ listened to young Shawn and thought "pentatonics...cool!"

EJ as in Eric Johnson? They were actually good friends and jammed a few times. Eric is the master of tone, and Shawn is the master of technique.
