  • 01011001 is about how the people of a distant planet, Planet Y, lose a war to machines. The machines, instead of killing them, simply mechanize their lives to a point where they are completely reliant on technology. They forget how to feel and how to have emotions. They find themselves in a state of "comatose." They want to continue their race, so they place their DNA on extremophiles and send it to earth on a comet. The comet kills all the dinosaurs (the Earth Extinction) in the process.

  • @sol800111 Their plan works, and the extremophiles further the race on Earth. However, in the second half of the album, the human race evolves too fast (1900-2085) and they eventually all kill themselves in a Global Thermonuclear War (The Sixth Extinction). "The Human Equation," and "Into the Electric Castle," are both other Ayreon albums. They are about programs run by the emotionless people of Planet Y that are trying to remember what it is like to experience emotions.

  • I'm really not a fan of the 01011001 double album, although I love the rest of the Ayreon canon. Having said that, this song kicks all kinds of ass. I'm writing my senior thesis in part on evolutionary biology, and this is ridiculously fucking appropriate to listen to while working.

  • Such an amazing song! Storytelling such as this is rare indeed. And the songwriting is simply unparalleled. Arjen \m/

  • A good song choice for procreation.

  • Ed Warby <3

  • A song about panspermia... well, I didn't see that coming. XD

  • 01 and The Human Equation are some of Arjen's best works, incredible music

  • What's an extremophile?

  • @JustAnotherSonicFan

Extremophiles are bacteria how are able to survive and even trive under extreme circumstances like extreme cold for example

  • @JustAnotherSonicFan An extremophile is an organism that can resist to extreme conditions.

  • @JustAnotherSonicFan They've been found everywhere from the sides of volcanoes to arsenic lakes. They have also been found on comets and satellites and there is currently a theory floating about that Life on earth originated from a comet crashing and the extremophiles on the comet propagating the Earth. hence, the line "You are the future little extremophile". Yes, I know my shit.
