Hi guys I really enjoyed watching the video and for sure you got some nice SFX from that car. I'd like to know what recorder did you use and what mics do you recommend when doing that type of recordings. Thanks.
For this shoot, we used a Rode NT-4 and a Sennheiser 416 and fed them to two Fostex FR-2 recorders. Typically, we always carry a stereo mic and a shotgun mic when we're in the field. This combination gives us the most flexibility for 'on-the-fly' recording.
I love watching the silent celebrations sound guys have when they get that great sound they were looking for... Thanks Ric and Co. for this great vid, can't wait until the next one. Next time though, for educational purposes, a list of the mics/recorders used, and maybe why they were chosen? Were they TC or TOD synced or just free rolling? As it stands it's kinda just a video of guys beating the snot out of a car, which on its own is hilarious, but not too educational. Which was the goal, right?
We're working on a webisode series ("Wild Tracks") that will be all that and a bag of chips! This vid was more of a last minute deal and we wanted to see if we could cut a vid about recording sound effects in such a way that was entertaining. We've received alot of positive feedback and requests for more. So, stay tuned!
For the record:
Mics - Stereo Rode NT4 and Sennheiser 416
Recorders - Fostex FR2s
No TC or TOD, just free roll with a sync slate at the start of each take.
Well it's definitely entertaining! Looking forward to more. Thanks for filling the void of sound effects knowledge. I'm getting the bible as soon as I get my next paycheck, and everyone at work will be getting shirts for the holidays!
killer video...we too were hoping for an explosion to conclude the video...we like the metal track playing over the video as well. Looks like tons of funs!
I was hoping you'd blow it up with dynamite at the end, but nice video nonetheless! The pick-axe to the tire sidewall was the icing on the cake LOL. Hey, where was G-Walli during all this?
That's funny - because we have an outtakes reel where the crew kept asking to blow the car up at the end! The reality is when cars are blown up in the movies, there's really not much to the sound - just a pop and a small fireball sound. It's all post sound. FYI - I used to be a licensed pyrotechnician and blew up about a half dozen cars... They look impressive, but don't sound impressive at all.
Nice guys. Did I ever tell you about my brothers Dodge Monaco which was in one of those "pay a buck to whack the car with a sledgehammer" things. It still started up at the end of the night. Very funny stuff.
I liked the hammer hitting shotgun mic sound. That was great. :)
yep, they don't make them like that anymore!

I was behind the camera, dude! Believe me, if we could have blown it up, we would of. The whole fire code permit thing got in the way.
