Oh GOSH!! Why do people keep saying that the events never happened???? Birdo made appearances since then, Bob-ombs have appeared since then, HELL even Shy Guys have appeared since then. Not to mention Mario learnt how to actually carry items in Mario 3 through this adventure. Wart INVADED the land of dreams, Mario and co. saved them and the Subcons sent the heroes back home through 'waking them up'.

I think it's a great expansion to the Mushroom Kingdom from all the games that are classic (Super Mario Land 1 + 2, Super Mario Bros. series including Super Mario World) to the more recent games (Super Mario Sunshine to Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, and Mario and Luigi series). That way, Mario has more foes than just Bowser.

My guess is that in Ocarina of Time, Ganon didn't exactly know about the Master Sword or the legend of the Hero of Time when he tried to get the Triforce. So it's not as stupid as some may think. At least beating Ganon is more satisfying that beating Wart, I'll say that much.

Cool fact, Doki Doki Panic was Originally Mario 2, but Nintendo thought it was too different from the original and canceled it, later a tv company would request Nintendo to make a game for an upcoming show so they used what they had from what was Mario 2 and made Doki Doki panic. Soon Nintendo decided to make a pro version of Mario and call it Mario 2. When America denied Mario 2, Miyamoto thought of redesigning Doki Doki but with Mario Sprites, So technically SMB2 USA is the real Mario 2.

A nerd here. The hearts in the game aren't random, they actually pop up after every fifth enemy you kill. No idea why, and I'm not sure why I even know that, but yeah, that's what causes them. It might be every five without getting hit or something, but I know it's every five enemies.
