Even Ambareesh had lot of style and was much more experienced than Rajni at that time. But Rajni kept growing as an actor and gave outstanding acting in Dalapathi. Just like Rajni, Arjun, Murali etc also acted in many films in Kannada but could not compete against the established actors and had to move to Tamil.
Rajnikanth started his career in Kannada films and acted in many films as a second hero or villain against Vishnuvardhan or Ambareesh. Rajni could not compete against such stalwarts as Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, AnantNag(among the finest actors of India), ShankarNag(he won the best actor in his debut in international film festival and has directed many memorable films and directed Malgudi Days a famous TV Serial. Under Puttanna Kangal Srinath gave outstanding acting as well.
Apthamitra was remade in Tamil as Chandramukhi. But Vishnuvardhan's acting was a masterclass when compared to Rajni. Rajni looked very pale. Similarly Soundarya acted much better than Jyotika. Jyotika portrayed the character as a mad woman. But Saundarya portrayed the character as a woman under a psychik vibration and was outstanding.

How ever Rajni was good at that time as well, but he was raw and all the other actors I mentioned have been among the best in Kannada film history. Even Ambareesh had lot of style and was much more experienced than Rajni at that time. But Rajni kept growing as an actor and gave outstanding acting in Dalapathi. Just like Rajni, Arjun, Murali etc also acted in many films in Kannada but could not compete against the established actors and had to move to Tamil.

As a mallu, I have enjoyed watching Tamil and Chirnajivi movies. Rajni and Chiranjevee are superstars whose moives are usually for the masses. On the other hand, I have always felt that Kamal likes to do both masala ones and off-beat movies. Rajni and Chiranjavee are undoubtedly the bigger stars with huge following but Kamal is without a shadow of doubt, the better actor. And I am proud to say that both mallu superstars-Mohanlal and Mammooty are very good actors.
