Uri Gellar's claims of physic powers got the interest of scientists world wide and rather than admitting his trickery, Gellar allowed the world to test him, costing millions in tax payer money. Randi defends against this type of behavior. Other charlatans such as Peter Popoff have put actual lives in danger; allowing people to believe that they were cured of terminal diseases.

If they were really so adamant about fooling people, couldn't they have fashioned a thin piece of realistically textured flesh-colored latex (or something) and put it over the heel of the palm like Randi does? With a bit of glue and makeup and someone who is skilled at making latex pieces, it could be virtually undetectable. Would it even work through latex, though?

Most likely he's putting on his thumb a flesh coloured cover, with a small magnet concealed inside it. He has to put this on in the middle of the act, because early in the act he passes his hands several times over the compass and nothing happens. Only when he's ready for the compass to move does he actually obtain the concealed magnet that will make it move...
