  • I have a model I recieved from somebody else for a project, he somehow changed the COM so that the selection tools such as footstep and figure mode are not options, but it still carries the model, any suggestions? I need it to animate properly but cannot undo what he did.

  • when i freeze my mesh the colour of the wireframe is white. whereas your mesh once you have selected freeze selection turns grey. am i doing something wrong?

  • @TehSplatt

    troll detected

  • Oh my god Dave Jones why do you not go by Davy

  • you can use de copy posture to copy the finger position to the other side

  • I hope you realize by now you can copy and paste. Work with one side and paste it to the other. Great tutorial.

  • @143rdqueenz That feature wasn't added before 3DS MAX 2011 and this video was made in 2008.

  • @AnimationsInColors I have Max 2008. i just used that feature two weeks ago.

  • I'm having issuesnot being able to move my skeletons pelvis back... I'm doing a cartoon figure and the legs interlock close to the back of the spine.

  • Do you have any tutorials on creating Characters and/or the uniform?

  • how do you get that xray view so you can see the biped through the character

  • @williamssally with the object that you want to see through selected, right click. select 'object properties' & you'll find a 'see through' -or something like that- button.

  • hi just a question what kind of character should i be lookin for like what format obj ect im using 3ds max and want to do the same thing i have a biped character and now need a model just wondoring about the format as am fairly new thanks in adavance

  • Thanks, you really made that simple enough for us to understand. You are good at teaching, keep going.

  • the thum has 2 links

  • Thanks dude! Helps alot!!! :)

  • this is skinning :) not rigging ;) !

  • where do you get characters

  • is it manditory that i freeze the selection? if I do i cant see as well when placing in the biped.

  • What we wanna do is stop saying 'what we wanna do'

  • Wow, user-friendly much?

In Maya you would have to use the Joint tool and IK Handles to do this.

    :|

Kinda glad I just recently switched to 3DS Max........It'll be nice to have mastered both. ;P

  • dude can you help i did what you sad i hold my biped between the legs and then bring it up but man its going tooooooooooo far like to far in your video 1:13 your biped are in posetion but mine doen't do that did you get what i mean

  • If this is part 1 you can make link at the end of the video to part 2 it's way easier to find it that way!Nice tutorial by the way.I'm pretty new to 3d max and modeling/animation at all, but from this tutorial everything seems not that hard.In the most i'm just not used to max's interface and don't know what is where.Anyway good job!

  • :D awesome many thx dude :)

  • Why cant I scale my legs in 3Ds Max 2011?

  • Hi! I like the tutorial but how can you delete bibed parts? In my case i want to rig an arm and dont have the rest of the biped skeleton!

Sorry for bad spelling and english :(

  • @AnimationsInColors you cannot delete biped parts. if you only want to rig certain parts and not the whole thing you will need to rig using the bone system instead

  • @videofxuniverse I think they mean how to use this biped system without the biped itself being visible. In that case, you would have to select the biped>right click>hide selection

  • @videofxuniverse sorry if this may sound stupid but what exactly is a biped? Im new to 3ds max. Is it like a regular premade skeleton for a fully textured body?

  • could this work if your animating a cartoon and the features of the cartoon are exaggerated and not the same as a regular human?

  • cool merci!!

  • Man this tutorial is great!! Thank you, really helpful for my zombie game :):)

  • When I put my character in or whatever to call it, it just turns black! :( Please help

  • whos disliking this? its a perfect tutorial

  • Just hint from a beginner :P U can copy paste from left side to the right side:P so u dont have to do the same thing again

  • @0wnedby1337 Yes you can sort off by using the copy and mirror tools in Biped not ordinary copy and paste, have only watched this first vid, but would not surprise me if it is covered in one of the others. You must first click on the create collection button this enables the copy posture button once you use this for a part you can paste opposite. Ok and good luck with any future Max rigging.

  • Why is it so hard to find a tutorial on youtube for creating a rig from scratch and not using one already made from max?

  • @WiiFolderJosh Because it takes a long time and can be reasonably complex, try the ones that comes with Max, would be good to see in vids but would have to be over a lot as it can involve scripts/expressions and wiring. Have a good one with it.

  • Nice. It addresses those little things we would otherwise get stuck on

  • Great tutorial. Very simple and easy to follow. Cheers!

  • hay where can i download this :), i am new in 3ds max animations, i whant to animate cod4 bodys :) and i think this video will help me very much:)

  • Nice tut man, but can you explain how you reposition a biped bone (bip_01) AFTER you've rigged the mesh to it (only moving the bone, not the mesh)? I cant find the answer ANYWHERE!

  • Nice tut man, but can you explain how you reposition a biped bone (bip_01) AFTER you've rigged the mesh to it (only moving the bone, not the mesh)? I cant find the answer ANYWHERE!

  • thanks dude,my best part of tutorial

  • Maybe it's worth mentioning at the end, to switch off 'figure mode' after placing the biped is finished ... ?

  • can you please tell me if you can link this biped to a game for example when we strike the ((m)) from the keyboard the biped will move and if we press (s)from the keybord we can stop the biped??

  • great tutorial Dave thank you very much!

helped me alot with my HW for tomorrow....so probably I will check your website as well.

    A little Tip though....

its much easier to position the Biped to the Mesh by lower the oppacity of the Mesh body, this way you can see both parts clearly.

to do this simply right click the Mesh---object properties--turn on "See through" checkbox...or lower the visibillity to about half or so.

hope to see more of your great tuts soon

    thanks again

  • @freeeeeemusic stop spamming my tutorials with your crap

  • @videofxuniverse hey emm im trying to rig a cod4 man buts its way too hard his hands are like bent and i cant do it ;( HELP!!! plzzzz xD

  • @drifta321 unless your figure is positioned with his arms and legs out like in my video you will never be able to rig your character

  • @videofxuniverse emmm lol lots of people have rigged it before but wont help me u can rig it its just really hard and im not good at it

  • @drifta321 They either have the original models that were used before they were put into the game or they ound a way to get them in the outstreached position which sees unlikely. I have been doing this for a long time and i know for a fact that rigging an unposed character is next to impossible

  • @videofxuniverse ;/ lol xD there are lots of things on tek-9 so its not mpossible.... it is easy but i cant do it mazarini told me how to do it ... the arms are just bent a little and its hard to do biped (for me) dont just say impossible when you have no idea what model im talking about .....

i was told how to get the models and how to rig them i just suck at rigging so you are wrong about the stuff you said at least research it before just saying its impossible

  • @videofxuniverse jaja well done, that sucks like youtube ads! ;)

  • When you say "this button", you need to name the actual button so we know exactly what button you are talking about.

  • Nabil from morocco

Best tuto ever Thanx and keep going i really need your stuff Mister dave

  • Okey?

  • nvm I had to select the biped :P

  • i have 3d max 2010 and i can't find the figure mode in the motion roll out!!!Help?

  • @TorpedoSling I have 2010 and you need do go to figure mode by pressing the little figure.

  • @MultiJacob123 lol i figured it but thnx for the reply

  • how to put JA character in 3DS max ?

    how did you make it?

  • import

  • i cant scale the biped and i cant find the figure mode thing

  • figure mode is on the "motion" rollout

  • whats a quick and easy way to break into parts a figure after i have imported from zbrush? please help!

  • how the hell did u drag down the collar bone?? when i do it it just rotates the arm.

  • OMG! just click figure mode!

  • woah settly down man.. and i am in figure mode btw ... but dont worry i got it to work.. has been a month.

  • and how can i make arms longer?

  • Just use the scale tool on the arms?

  • hwo can u delete like only the hand of biped without deleted the whole biped?

  • click the figure mode.

  • I can't resize a shit on the biped and it's really pissing me off

  • When I select something and I wanna move it my x and y arrows have been replaced by ugly, red lines, please help!

  • press the leter x on your keyboard

  • how do you drag on the screens to like drag the viewing down or up?

  • press X while in move thing lol

  • hey guys think i found the solution to the physique prob instead of going up to the Select By Name button click on the pelvis bone

  • can the biped be edited to fit in creatures like hydra, spiders, etc.

  • technically yes, but for creatures like those or four armed people, etc you need to add and link bones to a part of the biped. then when you apply the physique mod the bones with go with the biped.

  • i saw this tutorial (and also downloaded it) and after this i have a question:

is this Biped thing good for animating non human characters? for example: dragon, horse, dog or any other 4 legged creature?

if yes i would like to see a tutorial of that cause i have a dragon character i wana animate but i had no succes yet:(

  • Yes it is possible to rig 4 legged animals such as lions, dogs etc... But it is not recommended to use motion capture files with them because most mocaps are prepared for humans so you would need to animate their legs (arms) yourself just bend the biped over so hes on all fours

  • ok thanks:)

it's starting to move as i wanted to:)

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I've been looking everywhere for a clear explanation of this procedure.

  • Thank you, this has been a big help towards one of the hardest university projects I've had to do - I really find animation hard and this has done me a great deal of good.

  • is there any way i can select the verts manually the assign to a bone.

  • worked with blender before?

  • nah I was planning on working with it why?

  • because thats a way to rig characters in blender, well i have been trying both programs 3ds max and blender, it just sounded familiar for me :)

  • ok i will try blender to rigg my models then thanks.

  • can you make a tutorial of how to make this mesh please?

    thanks

  • Great tutorial!

  • Thanks, good tutorial.

  • thank you so Much videofxuniverse, i have question for you please ! i have a man and he is One object so when i want to do what you are doing On the video the biped still move by it self can you please tell me why and thank you so much again

  • Sweet.

  • Brilliant - found out some new things after all these years - you can move the fingers!!! - thats gonna save me alot of jiggery pokery!! - hours wasted trying to fit them f**kers in - you can move them individually!! - Why didnt I think of that before. - many thanks Dave!!
