  • A great song.

  • From crap record players to you tube... still GREAT 30 YEARS ONNNNNN.....

  • THIS BASS IS FUCKING IMMENSE, HOLY SHIT, WHEN I LISTENED TO THIS I WAS LIKE "OH MY FUCKING GOD!!"

  • my favourite stranglers number

  • what a killer bass sound for a record from the 70's...imagine what a punch to the stomach it must have been at the 100 club!!! I love everything about this band, they are so fucking unique!!!

  • i go onto this video and i get an advert for cher loyd, chere fuckin loyd!! seriously!?? where is the sanity in this world!!!!!!! anyway, top fucking song!! :D

  • Hello. I'm 15, and who honestly cares? This band is clearly amazing, it's just a shame more people my age can't see that. They prefer to listen to the charts because they're all sheep and want to be popular... Quite sad, really. I'm going to see The Stranglers on Saturday :D And I am SO excited :)

  • @BethanyRachelFairley

I'm 15 too haha :) I love the Stranglers. Mainstream music is crap. The only good modern band really is Kasabian. They produce rock and change sound every album. I saw them two months ago.. It was amazing and the new album will be incredible. Your so lucky! I'd love to see the Stranglers. They are for us British to be proud of. Thank god i'm not the only one who thinks mainstream music is crap! :)

  • @Gigimolly11 Yeah I agree, Kasabian are great :) I love Vlad the Impaler. I might be a little bit biased by the fact Noel Fielding is in the video :P One word. Nom. And The Stranglers gig was last night... It was AMAZING. I was right at the barrier and it was so loud, but it was so worth it. I was about 3 feet from JJ... and at the end he lent down to give me his guitar pick but some bitch snatched it away :'( Still, I got to touch his hand! :D I got the drumstick from the support band too :D

  • @BethanyRachelFairley

Vlad is brilliant! During that performance i was jumping about like a lunatic and tom looked up smiled and waved at me haha :)

Aw, lucky! I know now from you to go and see them if they do any more gigs!

So next on the agenda is for you to see Kasabian and me to go to the Stranglers! :) If i knew you in real life, we'd probably get along great haha :)

Sorry about the guitar pick, concerts are bad. The kasabian gig, over 18,000 worth of phones were stolen.

    It's bad :(

  • @Gigimolly11 I know right :) awesome! I swear JJ looked at me and we sang "walking on the beaches" together, while I was jumping around and he was doing his cool dude funky bass dance moves :P And yes! I must see Kasabian :) haha, and yeah we probably would! :O that sucks! some people are such assholes :(

  • @BethanyRachelFairley

That's my brother's favourite Stranglers song haha :) Peaches :)

Aw, bless. Lucky! JJ sounds lovely!

I know yeah, mine wasn't. I was on the Balcony. But tom through his Tambourine also. You could see a huge dog pile on the floor haha :)

  • @charmiancharm I was brought up on this music too, born in 90. Thats so cool, your mum was a groupie :D maybe JJ is your dad!! :O jk kiddo, don't panic x

  • @charmiancharm You have the best mum ever

  • AWESOME! I will go to the grave with this band....

  • I love the Stranglers!

  • i will strangle or hang someone for theoriginal LP

  • @bangkokhermetik

    :smug face:

  • @Nosferotica i agree,but with the tongue its more fun -->: P,...no?(lol!!)

  • In my late teens I would have sacrificed a major organ to look like Jean Jacques Burnel - or a minor organ just to play like him.

  • That's not a bass guitar, that's a tactical nuclear missile.

  • @Ultragravy Tis an awesome entrance you never forget no matter how long you live

  • Brilliant musicians...all of them, today's propped up pop-stars could only dream off such talent

  • Saw Stranglers on TOTP and was blown away. My dad bought me "Rattus .." and really rated it - briliant album, debuts don't come any better.

  • it's about finding the right people (no matter what age) to make good songs sound magical. and then......egos and class A's get in the way . sad eh

  • I like Lady Gaga...I really dig the Stranglers...hey- lets get it together and like who you like...every artist has their own appeal to someone - somewhere! Let us know who you like since we have similar tastes...that is how to get the word out other than slamming someone! How about the "Dead Boys" or Steve Earle or Lucinda? Or?

  • I've seen the Man (Hugh) live last yeah, damn epic!

  • this was the first album i ever bought. it cost 5 pounds.i worked 10 hrs on a saturday job.50p per hr..5 pounds.money well spent.

    :)

  • @lewilewis1 class post...me too ....double :) :)

  • I'm 8 years old and I love this music, can't stand any of this new rap music. Seeing them live soon.

  • @dudesays100 i know what you mean mate! I have my prom next month, but i have managed to get always the sun on there, so that will do! Haha :D

  • @CrazyStubs3 got my prom next month too mate. rare to meet someone my age that likes epic music!

  • loved this and london Lady off the same album. even us old bastards can teach these youngsters somthing obout music!

  • They never got any promotion in America and never really made it there. But in the UK they were among the best. Got voted the top band from the punk era in a survey in the music press a couple of years ago.

You get people in America going on about punk and how they influenced the UK scene and they miss this side of it altogether. In the UK people are scratching their heads going 'erm America..what influence was that?' Basic difference of viewpoint. Rattus Norvigicus, No More Heroes, The Raven.

  • @napoleonbonerpart

For my money the Stranglers were amongst the best in the world and they influenced many generations but Iggy Pop and the Stooges 1969 ,Patti Smith at CBGB's 1973, Ramones and Blondie at CBGB's August 1974, Lou Reed were all influential figures in New York punk before The Stranglers were formed.

The Stranglers were actually the opening band for Patti Smith and the Ramones British tour in 1976.

  • @Barristered do you that they are frenchs?? at least the singer!!

  • @bangkokhermetik

JJB is English born in Notting Hill, London to French parents and Hugh Cornwell (the singer) is also a Londoner.

    youtube.com/watch?v=_PLKdcAKU84

  • @Barristered thanx for your answer, bcause in the 80 i saw them at the gibus in paris and we spoke french and one of my friend said me he was french, but truly i thought that weird bcause he hadd a little accent!

  • @Barristered Yeah I think this is why punk became such a phenomenon and has lasted so long as it has. There were all these bands in the US and also a bunch of bands in the UK and they were doing stuff in a similar vein but then when punk happened it was like a common cause on both sides of the Atlantic. There was suddenly all these possibilities that got everyone fired-up. I still find stuff I didn't know about at the time which turn-out to have been real influential, get quite surprised by it.

  • im 58 now and rocked my ass off to this album on my turntable in 77 on my classic jbl 100's.

  • I'd forgotten how fucking fantastic this song is.

  • Great song :)

  • I love the Stranglers & this song...as a 16 year old playing their cassette I would dance around my bedroom in a music induced frenzy...none of my friends had even heard of them!

  • Comment removed

  • just an awesome track always was then and is now, takes me back to being a young teen and thinking"these guys make music with attitude"

  • @momatmach1 of that era, no bass player matched JJ for his attack, tone or prowess. there is no question he completely stood alone in the 80's as a 4 string powerhouse!!!! the only other bass player that had a greater impact on his genre in that time frame was Cliff Burton.

  • @tommynnocker Yeah you reckon hey? what about Barry Adamson

  • @tommynnocker Or is it Admanson? I can't remember the spelling exactly but he played with magazine and the bad seeds amongst others

  • the best stranglers track you could ever have pass by your ears, i am 47 and was lucky enough to be "born back in the day" enough said !

  • @MrVicnash

Ha ha, me too. Actually, just realised, I'm 48 today but that's just as good. Classic band, seen them often.

  • Happy lazy sunny afternoons in the park with mates and girlfriends feeling punky n cool and having a laugh.

  • @lewisself London lady is a classic! The Raven, Time to Die are other favourites of mine :)

  • @Technobanana F*ck yeah, got JJ's plectrum as well :)

  • Jean Jacques Burnel, has to be the Grand Vizier of dirty bass.

  • This band has the greatest attitude in the universe!

  • Top 3 Stranglers songs (mine)

    Walk on By

    The Raven

    Hanging Around

  • I saw 'em twice in '80/'81 when they toured through Texas. The 1980 show @ Spit in Houston was the best show I will ever see. The band's wits and emotions were strained to the nines. They stopped and walked off mid-set. One hour later they retook the stage with an anger and passion that overwhelmed and obliterated the fortunate few of us that stayed I will forever hear JJ in the encore, "....and when you find me all alone, the UNITED STATES has never been my home!" Bring back Hugh please!

  • I met them in person and we had a few drinks (others say a lot!).... My only complaint is that they are not together, like I met them. There can not be the Stranglers sound without JJ, Dave, Jet and Hugh.... it is not only the songs, it is who created and performed them.... RESPECT to them all. RESPECT to the British sound and their genuine punk.

  • Their first and Finest they've never bettered it..and no one else will either

  • It's suddenly become cool to declare how young you are on videos of music from before your time. Does your age matter? Why do you need to diss your generation in order to appreciate music from another?

This is one of my favourite Stranglers tracks, it's almost haunting in a strange way. I think the chorus' melody does it!

  • ilovethestranglers, and my dad knows dave greenfield which is cool (: we're going to see them play this month! =D

  • Any 15 year old that likes this stuff is all right by me and that makes a grand total of 1 fifteen year old so far.. good on ya mate

he's just hanging around (hanging around)

he's just hanging around (hanging around)

he's just hanging around (hanging around)

  • One of 'em comes closer

got a monkey on his shoulder

    and the monkey's getting grinner

but his eyes are on the ground

    he's just hanging around

    he's just hanging around

  • I'm moving in the Coralon

    Best Wishes MrBazzabee

  • shoot for 15, get a life, try harder

  • Wog are you 12?

  • @lapispinoza Oh so true! :)

I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere with you! :)

  • @lapispinoza Oh so true! :)

  • @lapispinoza Wow, there's that dumb comma again!

Do you have a Caps Lock key on your keyboard? If you do, do you know how & when to use it?

    Hahaha! :)))

  • @lapispinoza I suggest you learn English properly before attempting French, my Moronic little friend! :)

You really are ridiculous! Hahahahaha! :)

  • @lapispinoza Harsh words, my Moronic & Retarded little friend. You will get yourself into trouble with comments like this though. I suggest you calm down & be careful.

If commenting to me is making you this upset then I suggest you stop doing it.

Thanks for the extra laugh you just gave me by adding those commas in there for some unknown reason. :)))

You must be very sad & lonely just sitting there all day, thinking up nonsensical things to write to me.

    Hahahahaha!

  • @lapispinoza Still using a comma like a dumbass. Do you know what an apostrophe is & where to find it on your keyboard? Shit, you are so dumb! Hahahahaha!

I like the way you're trying to sound all clever now, but still managing to look really dumb! Hahahahaha!

Fuck, you really are fucking funny! :)

  • @lapispinoza This is really getting to you, isn't it! Hahaha! Give up & stop torturing yourself.

You don't seem to understand that with your lack of intellect, all you succeed in doing is making me laugh. I enjoy seeing you in such distress caused by your own foolishness and stupidity.

You really are a funny Moron! :)

  • @lapispinoza Nah, you just seem like a Mug! Hahahahahahahaha!

You are not intelligent enough to hit the mark, my friend! :)))

Your writing is still very poor. Do you know when & when not to use capital letters? Hahaha! :)

    Mug! :)

  • One of 'em comes closer

got a monkey on his shoulder

    and the monkey's getting grinner

but his eyes are on the ground

    He's just hanging around

    He's just hanging around

  • @drcid777 You sad Cunt!

  • wog- you haven't mentioned Thr Stranglers in your last five posts perhaps you could find a more appropriate board

  • @drcid777 Perhaps you should go & fuck yourself, you stupid Cunt & mind your own fucking business! Hahaha! You Cretin! :)

  • Great band. Great song. Thanks for posting. Look forward to seeing Hugh Cornwell with Fish and Blondie's drummer Saturday at The Red devil Lounge.

I heard that they will play Rattus in its entirety with more songs after including No More Heroes. Wow!

  • @drcid777 Hi I don't know anything about this, can you put some more info up

  • @lapispinoza NO! Hahaha!

Why have you put a comma after 'you'?

Do you know how to write in English? I apologise if this comment has caused offence as I see now that English clearly isn't your first language.

Or maybe you're a retarded simpleton? Yes, that must be it!

Please try harder though if you wish to insult me. Maybe add a bit of originality and try to do it without being coarse. Add maybe just a hint of intelligence too if you can dredge some up from god knows where. :)

    Try again!

  • @lapispinoza You are so weird & random. Another nonsensicalistic YouTube trollope! Keep up the good work! :)

    Lol!

  • @lapispinoza As you wish, you mug. :)))

  • one of them comes closer, got a monkey on his shoulder!

  • @LowOIL Oh, go on Technobanana. You & your boyfriend just gang up on me then!

Seriously, you 2 must be so homo to be even replying to my comments. I love winding mugs like you up, so please continue to comment. If you think Technobanana is such a hero, why don't you look at some of his other profane comments on other videos! LowOil sir, you are a Cunt for getting involved. Feel brave do you?

This is known as 'Cyber Bulling' apparently, so your friend says. Yes, 'BULLING'????? So stop it now!

  • @LowOIL TWAT!

  • @lapispinoza Not at all! I love winding up mugs on here! You sound like a mug too, my friend! :)

  • @LowOIL Why thank you sir.

  • @Technobanana TWAT!

  • @genesisrock43 The BBC don't ;)))..

  • Simply the best Bass sound ever

  • One of my favourite Stranglers songs, as a 15 year old it's hard to convince people to like proper music instead of XFactor crap. Seen them 15 times, soon to be 16 in Brighton. Most under-rated band in the world.

  • @CrazyStubs3 They're not that underrated mate. Plenty of people appreciate the genius of the stranglers!

  • @CrazyStubs3 I love the stranglers to man, I'm 17 and no one else i know appreciates them, nice to meet another fan closer to my age :)

  • @CrazyStubs3 i totaly agree im thirteen i went to see the stranglers yesterday i was moshin right at the front

  • @benmorganmckenna Haha nice one mate!

  • @CrazyStubs3 Dude if it was the dome, i was there :D the gig was sick

  • @CrazyStubs3 Most younger people like them, its not that hard to belive really .... but this is one of my fave songs too, this one london lady and straighten out are the best :)

  • @CrazyStubs3 I'm just as young as you mate. It seems we are the only 15/16 year olds now a daysa that likes this! it is all lady gaga and rubbish

  • @CrazyStubs3 WTF's an x factor?

  • Rattus is by far the best punk album ever. There isn't a bad track on it. Timeless.

  • @andracelt66 totally agree albums like this come around once in a lifetime my youth involves every track unbeetable

  • @RHiNO1OO - Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm in my forties now and I still belt out every song off this album in the shower, especially Down in the Sewer. It drives my girlfriend daft!!

  • Jean Jacques Burnel is my favourite bassist of all time- he is cool as fuck. FACT!

  • @scottlandsman >> ab so bloody lute tely

  • I grew up with this music and have met Jean Jacques, Hugh and Paul Roberts - through my big bro! bet none of you have done that!!!

  • @seanoturbo

I've met JJ, Hugh, Dave and Jet. Watched the movie "Eraserhead" with them. Guess I win the bet.

  • so r they punk rock?

  • i prefer stranglers over doors any day

  • Blimey i can remember going down to my local record shop when i was14 and buying Rattus Norvegicus when it was released in late 1977.

Ive still got the Lp and its only been played about twice in all those years.

Its still my favorite album of theirs and when i was in school in Cardiff i can remember seeing them in Spillers records in either 1977 or 78.

I got all their autographs except Dave Greenfields because the shop was ever so busy and i had to catch the train home.

    Great Times

  • I'll be your Mum if you ever need another one...

  • pardon my ignorance but..... why does bieber even rate a mention here? has he had the gall to cover this classic?

  • Comment removed

  • Great song from a great album...!!!

  • This is good shit. I like it.

  • By far the best punk rock group. No one to touch them.

  • keep it simple. just because there's a psycadelic organ is not The Doors.

  • In memoriam to Gary (Ning) Nyhon and Gary (Gorilla) Strachan. Gone but not forgotten. One a suicide and the other a drug over dose. I miss you two and without your influence would have never "Listened" to the music. Skin heads rule !. I see Ning in his Cherry Doc Martins and his FUCK YOU ALL attitude to this day. I see Gorilla with his high powered MC, terrorizing all and sundry. Who would know that two fellas would love me as much as they both did. Bye Guys, I love you both.

  • classic

  • well its sounds better than the live version i got at home

  • Spotted Hugh in The Comic Strip's "Funseekers" last night!

  • fuckin dogz

  • If you're sick of watching people mindlessly hovvering over your buisness, then this would be the perfect track for you. They're just hanging around. With the leather all around me, they're just hanging around...

When your endlessly trying to be a master in your own right.

  • I would love to talk about my fave band eva the Stranglers all night but some of their vids arent very pc. This song, Hanging around shows their class and their punk heritage at the same time. They became more succesful with the likes of Strange little Gir and Golden Brown which would have been a number 1 if not for the Jam making a straight in hit that week with Going Underground . I love the Stranglers. A superb band that made me love music scene for a while. This one is called Hanging Around.

  • Doors-Stranglers- two of the best EVER!
