I was lucky enough to jump 2x (700+ ft) with Dan Osman on the Rostrum rope swing......just a couple of weeks before he died...a sad farewell to Dano...the greatest jumper EVER !!! R.I.P.
What a shame, sorry to hear about the loss. He seemed like a nice guy on his interviews in the videos. But he was dancing with the devil and you can't be invincible for ever. Again, sorry to hear this.
Dan Osman died November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a controlled free-fall. The failure was investigated by the National Park Service with assistance from Chris Harmston, Harmston concluded that a change in jump site angle probably caused the ropes to cross and entangle, leading to the rope cutting by melting...
Goddammit! I am a fan of skateboarding and skydiving, but rock hardcore rock climbing craps the shit outta me. This man (RIP) is a fuckin legend. I wonder if he had some Russian ancestry in him. Mighty fucking huge respect to Dan Osman!
What are these guys trying to prove by not taking simple safety measures? You won't spoil the feeling of being alive by doing that. Why risking their lives unnecessarily? This is not having balls, this is simply not valuing life enough. People are blessed with the opportunity of living, and these people disrespect this gift of nature by playing russian roulette with it. That's very sad. When these guys die doing these crazy stuff, it all becomes pathetic, not heroic.
@afsartori You are to conservative, life its a daring adventure or nothing, this peoples really live their lifes and not just simply exist and prolong their existence by not taking any risks. I appreciate people who challenging them self, do you realize that we can die today or tomorow but never lived like this guys do? Just search for Jeb Corliss, Jokke Sommer and see how a man should live, without this kind of mans humanity would not evolve.
@Srachi It has nothing to do with being conservative, it's respecting the life we have by not putting it unnecessarily under threat. The point of life is living, not increasing your chances of dying sooner! We could die today or tomorrow, and we'll have to live with this uncertainty until the last minute, but that's no excuse for playing around with it like saying to yourself "I don't care if I die today because I could die anytime". That's simply stupid. You can have fun with SAFETY.
@afsartori Yes the point of life is living but some cant feel alive without doing this risky things, you must understand and respect them.I would be very happy if i would be able do something that just a numbered few people can do on this planet or to do something that have not been done before by anyone. Do you realize how much control over the mind and fear should have a free solo climber or a wingsuit proximity pilot? They inspire me and i hope one day ill change my life entirely.
@Srachi I respect them, but my opinion is that one can practice radical sports without any compromise by adopting safety measures. Why doing bungee jumping over a rock solid ground instead of doing it over a lake, for example. Why climbing without safety ropes? They are just supposed to hold you in case you make a mistake, it won't spoil the climbing challenge. That's the point. If still someone only feels alive by being totally exposed to death, that's a psychological issue, not courage.
@afsartori You have no point in the bungee jumping scenario,if you do a 150 meters high bungee jumping over the water and something happens the impact would be almost the same with solid ground but i understood what you are trying to say. Wingsuit pilots and BASE jumpers take serious safety measures, they study 3d maps of mountains before they fly a new line, they check their gear but the rate of death in those sports is bigger than in anything else,is their life and they have an unseen happynes
@Srachi One can minimise the damage and survive by hitting the water straight, something that won't work if you have rocks under your head. I'd question this so called happiness. A happy person is a satisfied person, and a satisfied person do not have the need of doing the same thing over and over and setting the stakes higher and higher. These people are never satisfied. They are never happy. It's a drug really, if you analyse it carefully. It's all about adrenaline and endorphin production.
@afsartori Im agree thats like a drug, endorphine makes you happy but i can tell you that this people are always happy, they are living constantly, they travel the whole world, they meet new people, they do new thing, they never been caught in this so called modern society that eats away your time, your life.Jeb Corliss was asked that wingsuit pilots are insane? He told the media, driving 1 1/2 hours to the job place, working 8 hours in a corner and then driving back home 1 1/2 hours
going to bad exhausted and stressed and tomorow doing the same thing! He told thats insane, and im agree, this society, this world order make us robots, people like them are living in my opinion and they are happy. Everybody is different and i understand you and your point of view too but, there is a but in the question who is really happy and when, i bet people that do what they love to do are happy and happiness is somethign relative, you cant be always happy just by doing what you want and like
@Srachi That's a good motivation, I don't disagree with it. People are robots for sure. But one should always look for balance in life. Some of these guys go to the opposite extreme, and they end up throwing all the joy away by dying in avoidable circumstances and by being purely irresponsible. Be crazy, but be a controlled crazy. Ejoy life, but don't play around with it. Respect it, praise it. Don't throw it away pathetically because of a miscalculated the length of a rope.
@afsartori It was nice to exchange opinions with you, take care and excuse my wrong english. I have read what i wrote and some phrases dont make to much sense but i think you got my idea too.
@jamesteer1 is having a normal job really that exciting, he loved life but to live you have to explore every corner of life and go into the extremities of what life has to offer.
