Most cars can carry four or five peolpe, and given the attetion and thinking driving requires, the the "independence and freedom" perception really justified.
It's bound to be more than 3000 dollars. It's a car. And most of us unemployed folks don't have that kind of money. As for it being driven I'm still not convinced. Call me a pecimist if you want but driving it on a race track is one thing. On the freeway is going to be another matter entirely. And like it or not but there could very well be legal trouble for us all if a blind person gets into an accident. It won't matter to the sighted that they get into accidents all the time.
They missed the point of the video: blind guy wants to EXPERIENCE what others EXPERIENCE, not necessarily be independent drivers in a cage... That is more of a chore than fun...
@ZliaBR No, they've already debuted the actual car (a hybrid ford escape) at the Daytona races. They want this to be something that will take off. They plan to have it 100% finished June of either this or next year.
They acknowledge that the obstacle is not the car itself but societal acceptance. They want to prove that the blind are not incompetent, as people seem to think. You could review the comment sections of any such video for evidence of that.
Thought I'd voice my two cents here. I agree with those who say it's an accident waiting to happen and I've been blind all my life. It'd be nice to drive, sure, but I don't think it's ever gonna happen realistically. Too many variables and unpredictabilities. I don't think the National Federation of the Blind is taking all that into account. Nor do I think they should be spending money on such a project in the middle of an economic recession.
@Bryan198026 There are going to be accidents, just like there are accidents with the sighted, and yet nobody tells them to not drive. That's kinda the point.
It's $3000 dollars. What's wrong with spending that on technology that makes history?
Your comment was made 6 months ago so you may already know that the car has already debuted and is scheduled to be completed June of either this or next year.
obama should set aside a few trillion dollars to create roads for blind drivers only. He could use some of that money to create a tv channel dedicated to showing footage from these new roads. It might actually help to begin to pay off our national debt at the expense of people that cant see us watching them. I already have a couple ideas for the channel names; Zoo on Wheels TV and "No Destination In Sight" TV ("NDIS" for short).
@Dukesy19 Does the same logic not apply to sighted drivers? I'd argue that it's much more difficult to not pay attention with something like this because you are always being reminded of it, with your hands, your ears, you back and your legs, as opposed to a regular car where you only HAVE to rely upon your sight, really.
@LegendaryFrost I hope you or no one you are close to becomes blind because your ignorance would ruin you. There is very little a blind person cannot do without the right technology--- the only thing stopping us is attitude. We CAN use the "interweb", as well as iphones and ATMs. We have facebooks and twitters. We are lawyers and archaeologists, politicians and teachers. How dare you demean us? Please educate yourself before spewing hate.
unless there is gonna be some new auto pilot technology... i don't know if i could trust the blind behind the wheel. i can barely trust drivers that CAN see
i love those go-karts, they are called hammerheads if anyones interested, i saw them at some guys store hand he gave me a brochure and everything. i have no clue if they are popular or not
Ok, but what if something sudden happened, and you have to antipicate an accident (IE: Car pulls out). Will blinds be able to maneuver an accident avoidance? Or hydroplanting? Extreme weather conditions, such as ice and nature disaster effected roads?
Hmmm. It's a start, but nowhere close to even thinking about letting a blind behind the wheel of car.
Hmmm, if Lexus was given the project to create a car specifically designed for the blind, it would cost quite a few roubles. I'd say, concept at $1,000,000, and production model starts at $400,000. At least.
Also, even today's Lexus doesn't give a blind very good characteristics in driving. Remember, technology will never go beyond man.
@ScorpioFuror They made it with a $3,000 grant. I'm not sure how much the actual car is, but it's currently a hybrid ford escape and you can look it up. It appears as though the modifications are only going to cost about as much as it initially cost them, so "at least" $400k is an entirely obnoxious estimate.
at 2:30 of the clip it almost sounds like he said if black people can drive than they can pretty much do anything. and then ofcourse you see a black woman on the screen after he says that. seriously though i thought thats what he said at first so i had to rewind it
@PotaterFilms They missed the point of the video: blind guy wants to EXPERIENCE what others EXPERIENCE, not necessarily be independent drivers in a cage... That is more of a chore than fun...
Wow thats realy cool !!!!!! these people are incredible and for some blind person to get a chance to drive is awsome!!!!! Hats off to the college and the students .
What the hell is wrong with you? Why insult me? I was only mentioning, and i am seventeen taking several highers, and hopefully by the end of 6'th year i will be getting into a uni, as my grades are promising, all bar english and biology
Am I supposed to be impressed? I'm 19, in a damn good "uni" and let me tell you, doing good in HS does not mean shit when you get to college; whole different ball game. AND you know why I insulted you, read your comment...idiot.
While driving might be out of the question, at least at present, I wonder about how a specialized GPS perhaps build into a headset would assist the blind in basic orientation (direction) and mobility. It should possible for many if not most of the blind to memorize their favorite stores, bus stops.and their usual paths. Knowing when to get off the bus without having to ask for help would no doubt be helpful.
While the sensors do tell the driver to avoid trees and other obstacles, they do no good for roadsigns or directions. It's a neat idea and I'm all for equal rights for the disabled, but it's not perfect.
Most cars can carry four or five peolpe, and given the attetion and thinking driving requires, the the "independence and freedom" perception really justified.
