someone told me that the filters in gas mask have an expiration date, do you know whether this is true or not? i have an israeli style gasmask and ive had it for a few years. thanks
Hand sanitazier is not ideal no...use clorine/bleach instead. Also very good for disinfecting equipment etc. For viral diseases that are waterborne, a good dust mask, rubber gloves, some goggles and maby even some ductape will protect you unless you are careless. For airborne viruses etc, you will need some serious protection, and is a entirely different ballgame altogether...
What about a video on like the safty of your family when its really bad, like apocolypes bad, like gun control, locks for your house or wherever ur staying, maybe theres a fire and u need a flame retardent suit
In regards to not touching your face, how many of us come home, struggling with bags of groceries, etc, pull out your keys one handed ( the other is full), and separate out the key you want with your mouth? Makes it easier to grab and open the door, but who else has done the same before you? Very nasty habit, and potentially dangerous for condo/apartment dwellers.
Rick - I've watched all your prep videos and am loving them. Very informative, well presented. 5*
But, I must comment on gas masks. It's generally believed that army surp masks are useless at protection, due to their limited lifespan. The army surp ones will be expired and may leak (stiffened rubber/use). Filters deteriorate once opened. Also, older masks (WW2) may have asbestos in them. Generally buy new industrial ones (NATO military ones are actually restricted/not for sale).
He's a star is our Rick. Mad as a march hair. Mind you we may laugh but if it does happen at least we'll have Rick to pass on as our representative of humanity to future generations. He would Grandfather Rick - like Jesus Christ.
I mean no offense by this... but you seem like the guy who believed in the Y200k conspiracy. Though this was very helpful. You should make part 7- Zombie Survival. Zombies could happen... you know that right?
Hmm... zombie attacks - I'd better start doing some reseach on it. I hear there is a good documentry available called: Shaun of the..... something? :P
What about firearms and rocket launchers Rick? You never know what could happen. Or a tank might be useful? I mean that way you could go and get supplies without worry of being attacked by zombies.
Hmm those zombies can be an awful pest can't they! I'm looking at Exchange and Mart right now, there's a Scorpion tank up for sale. Rekon if I can sell the van, I'm going for it :o)
A bug-out video? Probably not as it's not really a very feesable scenario in the UK (not enough space - too many people) - but I hope to do a video on "get home bags" at some point.
Too bad the icon for the video isn't a picture of you wearing one of your masks. LOL
In the U.S. you need to look for a mask with a N95 Particulate Rating. That's what the CDC recommends. If not a pharmacy, home improvement stores or lumber yards carry them. Personally I've checked Menards and Lowes. They both have them for now any way.
Problem is, I'm out of touch with the current camera market. Haven't brought one in nearly 3 years - all my knowledge is now out of date.
Same goes for my 'video making' vids - everything I know about making vids, I've already made a video on! which has left me with a subject deficit for things to make video's on! :o(
Great video series, Rick! This one is probably THE most important one, too!! It's funny just how much we do some of the things we shouldn't on a daily basis without thinking about it.
what makes the industrial gas mask better that the NATO one?

What I have heard to get rid of viruses on the hands is use water as hot as you can stand it and lather up good with soap or even dish soap.

Take a look at Jerraph's comments below - the NATO masks may not be a good investment

Thanks for the info. I have to admit, this is stuff I didn't know. d:o)

It's a big subject that I've only been reading up on recently - but essentially army surps are a big no-no for protection!
But a legit, new industrial one would be fine... :)
Jerraph 2 years ago
where would you get one of those industrial gas masks?
FURRYYAK 2 years ago
They're pretty widely available. Just Google
"industrial full face respirators"
Mine is a Sundstrom SR 200 - they retail for about £150 plus about £30 for each filter.

what does a nato mask go for.?

Agree, been struggling to get S6 replacements apart from mylar-sealed ones from the 80's.
Do you know which years the 'dodgy' S6's were from? and from which year they are safe?
