The new owner of a Fleetwood Talisman must have thought he/she had died and gone to car heaven. I'll take this ANY DAY over those over-rated,over-hyped and WAAAAYYYY over-priced euro-trashmobiles. This is very sad, for now Hyundai, of all carmakers (!), is building the car Cadillac shoud have, the Equus.
Amazing cars...it's just a shame they were built to rather poor quality standards. The seventies was the time American car companies needed to step up their game in the face of heavy competition from the Germans. The Seville was sadly too little, too late and while car makers like Mercedes could never compete to the same level of luxury, the high build quality and top notch materials in their cars was unsurpassed by any other company...except possibly Roll Royce
Just shows us what American carmakers were/are capable of creating-----honest to God works of art! The Cadillac Talisman was made back in a time when excess ruled.
Todays cars are not even in the same ballpark as the grand old Caddy`s from back in the day.I prefer the older Caddy`s------i own a mint 1978 Cadillac Sedan Deville and a mint 1995 Cadillac Sedan Deville. As big and luxurious as both my rides are----they are not as luxurious as the best of all time----the Talisman.
@pompste The pre 1967 Caddys were even more luxurious. The Fleetwood 60 Special and the even more expensive Fleetwood 60 Special Brougham had real wood inside, fold out tables behind the front seats, even bucket seats were available, as well as other features no longer offered.
@pompste Cadillacs of today seem to "plasticy" and sterile. It seems like the plushness and rich fit and finish became substituted by cheap tech gadgets!
Mr. Palmer's line 'Getting around the country and style' says it all. Today's boring plastic cars all lack 'style'. They may be more practical BUT they are boring to look at. The mid-1970s began the end of the 'car culture' in the USA. By the late 1970s it was basically over as cars all started to look alike and lacked personality.
The 1974 Talsiman: the biggest, most luxurious, roomiest four passenger post-war automobile. The 75-76 Talismans were five passenger sedans and lost a bit of exclusivity.
@IluvSixtiesPontiacs I thought the '72 Cadillac in that movie was a Fleetwood. But I guess it's really hard to distinguish between the Cadillac Fleetwoods' and Devilles' for most years.
@Necroman666 Ir would probably cost close to a quarter million dollars to build a car like the old fashioned Devilles and Fleetwoods with modern technology. Today all auto dealers try to force their inventory down your throat, and we are stuck with plastic blobs that are about as structurally sound as a soda can. Oh the the interiors are only available in shades of gray.
@Necroman666 That would be nice but big brother government won't allow it for the time being, too many control freaks, social engineers, and greenies right now. They not only hate large cars they hate automobiles period unless it's an imported electric car or hybrid. They would rather waste tens of billions on high speed rail lines that can't pay for themselves or limit movement altogether. Ironically the one place where they could make and sell cars like this is Communist China, sad but true.
I like the Fleetwood Talisman. Strange thing about such a large car can old seat 4 people. Expensive options in '74 aside from leather and astroroof was front airbags $300, 8 track stereo $425 and Auto Climate Control $523. If airbags were ordered you got a ugly steering wheel, relocated ash tray and glove compartment and no shoulder belts or tilt steering. This was also the final year that A/C was optional.
Sounds to me like like you new something about these barges. I was selling Cadillac and Buick in those years in Ca. If you compare styling from 71 72 73 to 74 You see what I mean. Very clunky.
Moldings around tail lights faded in color and later rotted off. Interior quality was cheaper.
Paint was lously. 72 73 were bullet proof solid cars. 74 Buick's looked like dump trucks also.
De ville and Electra has a stupid scenic crusier look to many windows. They were smogged to death. Apiece of crap
The Fleetwood Talisman was produced for the 1974-76 model years and is very difficult to find. in thirty years of owning Cadillacs, I have seen exactly three - All 1974's.
man i practically cremed myself watching this. My baby. is a 69 Eldorado. DRK BRN, BLK VINYL TOP, 472 V8. Only 81,200 miles on her. She's a beauty but it's crazy to imagine it's front wheel drive with all that horse power. BTW black people like cads cause they just have hella good taste in cars, BUT I didn't say they were good at keeping them original and customizing them. lol
I had a yellow '74 Sedan DeVille in the late 80s that was mint. It had all of the original dealer stickers and even the oil change documents from the same Exxon station over the years.
Great car to ride in, but the 472 was a real dog by then. The 75s had the 500, IIRC, which might have had better smog units as well.
The 1974 DeVilles had a new body-different than the 1973 DeVilles. The 1975's front end was restyled w/rectangular headlamps and the final full-sized 1976s had minor trim changes to the front and rear. The all new 1974 rear-end styling was basically the same for all 3-years.
The Cadillacs in this video are "74"s. The 1975 and the 1976 had the rectangular headlights. The "73"s had the turn signal light still inbetween the two headlights.
Oh yeah, I remember that movie. Terrible Caddy abuse. Awful to watch, I can't take it!!! :-) Yeah, as others have said that was a '72. Probably a few of them were sacrificed for that lame movie, actually.
My moms friend bought that Fleetwood Talisman new in 1976,same body style as the 74,I was a youngster then who fantisised about having a car like it, fond memories, thanks for the post
Your Mom should have kept it. The Talisman is the rarest of the rare for Cadillac. I believe only around 1,400 per year were built for the three years that they were built.
I owned a 75 coupe deville 2 door white. black interior with a 8.2L 500ci big block engine. car was 6600 hundred pounds. Best riding car i ever owned. Driving that 75 caddy down the highway made me feel like i was special.anyway the moral of this story is nothing beats an old boat.
Granted those Cadillacs didn't handle as well or have the power of current models but stylistically speaking (especially the Eldorado) those cars are head and shoulders above many new cars. If some of the vintage body styles of the 60s and 70s could be incorporated into more of today's technologically advanced cars (such as the Mustang ) I would be much more enthusiastic about buying a new car.
0:28....THAT INTERIOR! New cars interiors are plastic like a lego or transformer toy! Old Cad's had lounge seats out of a strip club from the factory!
My grandparents were Cadillac owners since as far back as I could remember. Nothing compares to the ride of a big ole Cadillac cruising down the freeway. Quiet and plush. It seems that today, technology is mistaken for luxury. Sure, you can have a car today with hundreds of electronic features but you still feel every crack and bump in the road. Give me a heavy Caddy!
In 1975 I rode in a 74 or 75 Fleetwood that had the leather interior. It was a heavy leather like that found on the finest furniture. Its the kind of leather that would last unlike a lot of the cheap leathers you see today. It was the most elegant car I rode in, it belonged to a friend's parents who always bought new GM cars and had owned all the GM makes over the years except Pontiac.
i have a 1980 oldsmobile and a 1978 cadillac man nothing can replace those NOTHING(except for maybe another american car from the period) most of todays cars are just eyesores i wanna turn back time
Too right they don't. People say the CTS is the new "Real" Cadillac but it is just a modern remake of the Cimmaron, we need things like the 70s luxo boats!
honeystrunerscaper, ur right bout that too, and the only thing that's been savin Cadillac since the late decae was the Escalade, but that wont be 4 long because of the gas prices, which people r now sellin the escalade.
Hey, click on my link and see my video of large american cars!
The CTS is doing well in the market place. Luxo boats were great for then but the market no longer wants them. The CTS is a fantastic car that is on par with its German rivals which is the point. For Cadillac to survive they need the CTS and the coming replacement for the DTS and STS. Cadillac is back on track to becoming once again the standard of the world.
lol@rolling whorehouse. well...i love Cadillacs and glad to see they've gone back to rwd but i suppose we'll never have them like they were back in the 70s and 80s
My grandmother used to have a 1972 4-door Fleetwood Brougham and man that thing was huge, sadly she listen to her husband that said that she can sell it which she wish she'd never did and i do too. Plus, my great great grandfather used to own a 77 Lincoln Town car. Man i wish the Lincoln and Cadillac go back to makin these cars cause the cars today that they sell r not real, but i still do like New Lincoln Town Cars and the back of it looks similar to the Continentals.
My mom had a friend who owned a '71 Cadillac Calais Coupe back in the day. It was the "cheap" Caddy. No vinyl roof, no hood ornament, no lower body chrome. It was white with a handsome blue brocade cloth interior The only Caddy back then that didn't look like an over-chromed, rolling whorehouse. Also the same year you couldn't tell the front of a Chevy Impala from a Coupe de Ville. In '72, the Chevy front was changed because of it.
Sadly, I have to agree with you on the general quality of 1970's era cars. They had high-compression ratio engines supposedly "retrofitted" to starve on low octane gas. It wasn't the catalytic converter that did them in. It was poor engineering. Caddy's were just as susceptible to dieseling as any other make or model 'Merichun car. But you could play hand ball in the back seats.
American cars of that vintage were not very high quality and even Cadillacs had troubles with transmissions, engines, build quality, etc. Those problems helped establish Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, and BMW as the top selling luxury brands of 2007.
Now just what does "Leather trim" mean? DOes it mean the the whole seats are leather or just little pieces of trim someplace on the car are leather? Also was leather only rare in 74? I thought a lot of cadillacs had leather.
Nice nostalgic commercial video. The arab oil embargo and rising gas prices where already starting to kill these cars big time by 74'. On the engines it needs to be pointed out GM changed the rating system about this time of its motors from GROSS power at the flywheel to NET power with full accessories on like the AC. A 1970 vs 1976 model only had about 30 HP difference despite what you see in the rating charts.
MAAAN !!1 LOOK HOW AMERICAN CARS WAS ??? TO BAD THEY ENDED IN 96 AFTER DISCONECTING THE B-BODY ( IDOITS ) man i looked at it from the inside its like an airplane . ! this car have truck that can put 1000s of sutpids toyotas and hondas
I own a Fleetwood Talisman, with an electronically fuel injected 500 c.i. V-8 and a power glass sunroof(Astroroof),the only one like it ever made. It sold for $15,000 in 1976, a huge amount of $ for a domestic car at the time. You could buy a new Ford Pinto for $2800 then. The Talisman Option Group for Fleetwood was $1200 alone. The Astroroof was (!) $950, and the fuel injection was $450, not to mention the special blue metallic paint. She's a beauty.
Does your car have leather by chance? I have documentation saying it was a factory option, but I have never heard of anyone, or seen one on ebay or the internet that has leather. Have you seen one with leather?
Nope, mine is just dark blue velour. I have pix of one with the leather trim option, but these are super rare. It has a California plate that says "Jenks".
I had a '74 DeVille in perfect condition when I turned 16 (back in '86). It had the smaller 472 cubic inch engine that was really lacking in power! Not designed for the smog control era. That car was still wonderful though, I really loved sailing around in that boat! I miss it still to this day.
Didn't it have somewhere around 300 horsepower and the outstanding amount of torque that the huge 500ci engine made? There was a reason Cadillac put the 8.2 Litre badge on thos cars. And it wasn't because it was shiny.
71/72 saw the EPA regs, and a change in the way the horsepower was quoted. Lower compression motors for unleaded was part of it, but a switch to quoting HP with the engine with ALL its accessories attached (as opposed to the bare-bones engine itself), made the figures look even worse.
As much as I love vintage Caddys, I have to admit that they're making some really nice ones today. They're finally world class again after some 20 or so years of sucking!
imagine you you split coffee or something on them...
they are very comfortable though...I sat in one in a car show... they guy was obsessed though...he specifically told you not to lean back and only the drivers side seat was not covered in blankets
Has anyone bought that Cadillac car before.

Have you seen one with leather?
bigblockelectra 4 years ago
Nope, mine is just dark blue velour. I have pix of one with the leather trim option, but these are super rare. It has a California plate that says "Jenks".

dyou have a pic of one with the leather interior? could you send it to me? ... most people think it is a myth... that none exist

I had a '74 DeVille in perfect condition when I turned 16 (back in '86). It had the smaller 472 cubic inch engine that was really lacking in power! Not designed for the smog control era. That car was still wonderful though, I really loved sailing around in that boat! I miss it still to this day.

Cadillac always lacked power...not just in 1974. But they made up for it in class
hippieking 4 years ago
But what about the 1971 Cadillac Eldorado.

If Cadillac still made cars with that much soul, they'd be making more money than GM can waste on Cobalt's.

As much as I love vintage Caddys, I have to admit that they're making some really nice ones today. They're finally world class again after some 20 or so years of sucking!

That's when cars were boats.. :-) But what a ride!
SJguy 5 years ago
imagine you you split coffee or something on them...
they are very comfortable though...I sat in one in a car show... they guy was obsessed though...he specifically told you not to lean back and only the drivers side seat was not covered in blankets
then again its irreplacable
