I love sesame street because they don't try and talk down and simplify the dialogue just because it's a kids show. It is clean, it is educational, but it is almost NEVER patronizing. (and it is quite often very funny)

They TRY to make him go on, for the children, and I don't blame them, but he really isn't alive anymore. Kermit isn't the same without Jim. Kermit is gone, and we'll just all have to accept that.

@soccerguy325 I disagree with that. It isn't Jim but I still see the essence of Jim's spirit in post-Jim performances, even this one, and in The Muppets. Considering how many characters and properties have been completely mishandled since their original creators left (I'm thinking of Post-Walt Mickey Mouse), I'd say that those who have handled Kermit have the utmost respect for Jim Henson and his vision.

@BillyMaysLives I totally agree with you on the fact that post-Jim performers like Steve Whitmire have made it seem as though it WAS Jim doing the performances, but just because he makes it seem as though Jim is voicing him, that doesn't mean that Kermit is still alive. They are really just faking it now, even though they are doing it really well. Because Henson isn't alive, Kermit is gone.

@soccerguy325 Technically, you are right, but I can't help but feeling like Jim himself would consider Kermit now to be just as alive as Kermit when he was performing him. Kermit represented Jim and his ideology, especially the importance of imagination and following dreams. The fact that people are still willing to perform as Kermit, and spread that message, makes me feel like Jim would believe that Kermit, the character, is still very much alive.

@soccerguy325 That would be Steve Whitmire, who worked with him for over 10 years. He assisted Henson filming Kermit in The Rainbow Connection in the Muppet Movie. He was just 19 then, and Jim chose him to assist him for that scene. Whitmire even wrote to Henson at age 10, in 1970, about how much he liked his work on Sesame Street, and that he wanted to be a puppeteer. 8 years later and straight out of high school, he started working for Henson on The Third season of The Muppet Show.

Look, I love Kermit and the Muppets as much as the next person, but we just all have to accept the fact that Kermit isn't the same as he used to be. I mean, of COURSE they aren't just going to STOP his character as soon as Jim died, Whitmire is a WONDERFUL replacement! And I really respect him, his work and his life, But he isn't Jim. Jim WAS Kermit. And Kermit is really dead now. Only an impression of him remains.

You know what I loved about Sesame Street? All other kids shows had characters that talked down to us but SS had really messed up characters. Big Bird is a man child. Grover has delusions of grandeur. Count is obsessive compulsive. Oscar is a socially inept jerk. Cookie Monster is an addict.
