I got braces two days ago.when your in the middle of getting the work done nothing hurts u just have a little discomfort. And when I got my braces I never got my teeth blow dried but anyways when u do have braces nothing really hurts except when eating.u won't have much pain but it's really no big deal.i hope It takes a while to get used to braces but it's all worth it when you have a nice straight smile!
this is a good system for placing braces. I'm a dental assistant for a general dentist but had some training in ortho and have never seen this method. It's awesome and very time efficient, what is it called?
Umm.. How much if I may ask did you pay for him to get braces? I'm pretty sure I have insurance but still don't know if I can afford it. And are you able to get braces only on the four bottom teeth and your four top front teeth because I honestly think those are the only teeth that are crowded and weirdlooking..?
Dr. Bergh please answer back i am 13 and my bottom teeth are a little crooked and when I bite down my top teeth go over my bottom and you can't see my bottom teeth and my first orthodontist appointment is next week and i know i need braces but I'm afraid that overbite is only fixed with headgear and I heard there is surgery but that is not an option is there any other solution to my overbite besides headgear/surgery?
if my orthodontist had put me as much stuff in my mouth i would have screamed.
And to all who are soon getting braces on: To get the braces on does NOT hurt! It's weird, but this is not the hurtful part of braces.
But AFTER your braces are on your teeth you will not be able to eat bred or anything like that. Just ssoup and every thing that's gentle to your teeth.
Anyway all this is okay and later you'll have WONDERFULL straight and healthy teeth!
@SevereDesigns Hi SevereDesigns - everyone can have a slightly different treatment plan than another. For some the upper braces go on first, some the lower first and most both upper and lower. Check with your orthodontist and they'll let you know. Good luck with your braces, and congratulations on getting started to a heatlhy and beautiful smile. - Dr. Bergh
@vhc107 Dear vhc107, It sounds like your dentist has concerns about your teeth. There are problems that can occur from mis-aligned teeth that when corrected early can be minimized later - excessive tooth wear, periodontal bone loss, chipping and cracking of teeth. Braces put light pressure and tension on your teeth. The first 3 days your teeth will be tender, and then goes away. You might consider Invisalign, as we've found in general our patients' teeth are less sensitive. Dr. Bergh

@oreo199100 Dear Oreo199100, It's normal to be nervous since you've not likely gone through this experience before. You'll do great, I'm sure. Just let your orthodontist and the assistant know you're a bit nervous and they will help you anyway they can. Dr. Bergh
@agdollfan55 That's great. One of the best days in our office is the day we remove our patients' braces. You can check out other videos on our channel which show the braces being removed and also our patients' reactions to their brand new smiles. Congratulations on finishing your braces journey!! Dr. Bergh
@nima906 Hi nima906. The braces can irritate your cheeks and lips. Your orthodontist will likely provide you with some wax to help, and they can show you how to place it on the brackets. We also recommend using part of cotton ball (one that would be used to take off make-up), wet it, and then place it on the bracket or wire that is bothering you. Good luck with your orthodontic treatment. I know you're nervous, but I know you'll do great. Dr. Bergh
When they put braces on me it was way different/they put some weird blue thing to keep your mother open, made me bite a lot for a medal thing they put on my back teeth ,a black liquid on your teeth,+ more ,finally they put a color and they attached the wire to my Front teeth!Took a hour And still they need to put the bottom braces in a month. The dentist I go to is ghetto.
@JMAM10 Yes, I would recommend that you see an orthodontist. Do you have friends who have braces? If so, you can get a recommendation from them. Your dentist may also have some recommendations if you ask for some. Good luck with your orthodontic treatment. -- Dr. Bergh
I have a teeth same as those teeths from the kid shown in the video.. i wanted to make my teeth to be straight but i never been in a dentist even once.. is it okay to go to the dentist and get my braces? and one more question.. I have a decay teeth but never been removed is it still okay to have braces ?
@menthos984 Dear Menthos984. Thank you for your questions. One of the most important things in orthodontic treatment is to have healthy teeths and gums. You should definitely see a dentist before having braces and get all the problems taken care of. If braces are placed before the cavities are taken care of, it could make things much worse. Dr. Bergh
@MaryBerryOriginals Not all the time. The main reason to get your wisdom teeth removed is if there is not enough room for them to erupt into a healthy position. Often times the wisdom teeth become impacted or only patially come in. If that's the case, there may be problems at some point in time like infection or cavities. The great majority of the people I see in my office don't have enought room for their wisdom teeth. --Dr. Bergh
@brianberghdds i can feel a bump where they are located and one of them hurts alittle when i chew. what would you recommend for me to do. get it pulled out before i get the braces or after?
@MaryBerryOriginals Since they are giving you a problem now, I would have your dentist or an oral surgeon evaluate them and then you can make that decision with their guidance and help. --Dr. Bergh
What usually happens on the first Orthodontist appointment?, I am asking this because i might be have my first Orthodontist appointment in the coming year.
@trucks105 The first appointment is to determine if you will benefit and/or are ready for orthodontic treatment. The appointment will include an examination of your teeth and bite - this may be done with the orthodontist looking in your mouth or from pictures taken and viewed on the computer. Some offices will take x-rays at your first appointment to look at the developing teeth and roots; some will send you to a special lab for this. The appointment is easy and fun. Dr. Bergh
Do braces hurt? I was told I might have to get some and I'm worried they will hurt. Or if you can feel them working over time (like if you can feel your teeth moving into place). Please help
@kjoenkie No it doesnt it is just very uncomfortable and at my dentist they didnt have the tongue thing you tongue always gets dry. I just had my braces put on yesterday and the braces themselves hurt for a cuple days but getting them on doesnt hurt
hello dr. Berge...im a student at carrington college and i want to become a rda...i was wondering if the young lady who places the braces was she an rda or an rdaef
@bahabeauty87 Dear bahabeauty87, The answer to your question is possbily yes, possibly no. There are many factors that are involved in an orthodontic treatment plan that need to be looked at. The bite you describe I've treated with extractions and without extractions depending on a number of factors. Sorry I can't be more specific. Dr. Bergh
@dreamBIGandSMALL For some people it can, but mostly it's moving because when he tries to swallow, his tongue wants to push forward. It's a little crowded with everything in there, but it sure helps keep the teeth dry which helps the brackets to stay on much better.
@11bookham The triangles help to absorb saliva and do provide a cushion for the part that holds the lips and cheeks away from the teeth. So we find it much better for our patients when we use the triangles.
@11bookham I'm glad you had a great experience getting your braces on. We've used the triangles (we call them dri-angles) for years, and I'm going to try the next time without based on your suggestion. If we don't need them, why use them!! Thanks for your input and your suggestions.
@shelly274 It would be a good idea to see your dentist or if you have braces on, talk to your orthodontist at your next visit. If you have any pain, see your dentist right away.
hey im going to see the orthadontist on the 16 and i was wondering my top mouth are crocket but my bottom look fine...so if i do get braces do i just get them on the top or i get them both
@shelly274 Dear shelly274, Your orthodontist will help you decide if having only the upper braces is the right choice for you. Sometimes only one arch can have braces, but most often it's better to have braces on both the upper and lower teeth. It's a lot harder for most people to see if the bite is off, and your orthodontist will look at that as well as crooked teeth. Have fun at your appointment on the 16th!!
@brianberghdds thanks :D one question um i hear something like pop on my molars i dont really know if its my molars but its bothering me what i meen like bothering me i meen like its annoying it dosent hurt but it feels weird is that normal??? ill tell my othodontist
@shelly274 I'm sure by now you've seen your orthodontist and they've given you the options for treating your teeth. Most times it is best to put braces on both the upper and lower teeth, but once in a while orthodontic treatment can work with the braces just on the upper or lower teeth.
@Rebeccastemme279 Hi Rebecca! You probably don't remember when you were an infant and your new teeth were coming in. This is a difficult time for most babies and they are constantly fussing and crying when that happens. When your back teeth come in, you're a lot older and you've forgotten what it's like when new teeth come in where no other teeth were before. So long story short, you will feel discomfort when you back teeth come in. Ambesol or OraJel from the store will help.
@daisyma100 Hi daisyma100, We have some videos of patients getting their braces off, too. The videos show the first part and you can see how easy it is. We spend more time polishing the teeth, but removing the braces places the most pressure on the teeth. You can look at by searching for Removing Jacky's Braces or go to our channel and look towards the end of our videos.
@bluegirlz333666 No, it's not true. An orthodontist will determine what the best treatment is for you and make those recommendations. It may be best to wear a retainer prior to starting orthodontic treatment (getting braces), or it may not be.
Hi I just got braces and they put some blu hard thing on two of my teeth one on each side on the bottom. It kept my teeth from completely touching I guess. The second night I had them one of them broke and came off while I was sleep. Is that suppose to happen? It isn't part of my braces it was just on top of my tooth.
@annebreal It sounds like your orthodontist placed what we call a bite block on your teeth. This is used to keep the front teeth from coming together all of the way so you don't knock the braces off your lower front teeth. it would be a good idea to call your orthodontist and explain what happened. They will most likely want to see you soon to replace that.
i got my braces today and am wondering what they do on your teeth the next month? My older brother told me they take off the braces then put them back on, but i don't really get what he means by that.
@killertiger909 At your next appointment the braces will be tightened. This is usually done by removing the colored ties and replacing them with new ones. At a future appointment, the archwires will be replaced also. Braces are removed occasionally to move them to a different position on the teeth. This is usually done one or two at a time, if at all.
@rawrcook3is Different offices use different methods of placing braces, so not all offices will use the procedures we use in our office. I like the teeth to be kept very dry so that the braces stick better to the teeth. Anytime a tooth get moisture on it while the braces are being put on, the more likely that bracket will come off in the future.
@7736837742 It sounds like you would definitely benefit from orthodontic treatment. I'd recommend scheduling an initial exam appointment with an orthodontist and have them take a good look at your bite.
@7736837742 In general, braces would be recommended to correct your bite. With a deep overbite, the lower front teeth can be worn down quickly which is not healthy for those teeth.
@brianberghdds I also have a question whats the blue thing for how far down in your mouth because im scared im gonna gag and get scared and cry like i allways do even when they go to get the x-rays!!!
Hi, Dr. Bergh, hmm just wanted to know that while your putting the braces on, you do give brakes to the patient right? like let them spit, breath, stand up ect? Is it the same for all orthodontists? I maybe be getting mine and im am a very nervousy person
@metallica1694 Hello, generally it is not a good idea to stop in the middle of putting the braces on. There are certain things that are done to prepare your teeth and if you stop, you have to start all over again.
@NeverEndingKarla Me too. I must admit, this is the first time I've seen braces fitted like this (with the tray going over the teeth). I've always seen the brackets being placed individually by hand/tool.
hi, plz write bck, i just want to know that how long does an overbite take to get treated and does it make your lip look bigger coz my lip is pretty big now, but it didnt use to be like this, plz write bck im while depressed because of tht and i might even commit suicide coz i look ugly plz help.
@MultiJamie09 - i am not an orthodontist but it really depends on how your big your overbite is. the best thing would be to go visit an orthodontist and just ask them how long treatment time will be. i was in your position and was very unhappy with my teeth and i am getting braces on next week which i will have to wear for under 2 years
Hello, Dr. Bergh, Can we get braces while our wisdom teeth are still growing? And do we have to get our wisdom teeth pulle dout because mine are growing in absolutely straight.
@AkeelahCross Dear AkeelahCross, Yes you can get braces while your wisdom teeth are still growing. And not all people need their wisdom teeth out. I would say approximately 80% of my patients benefit from having their wisdom teeth removed. But that means that 20% (1 out of 5) people can keep their wisdom teeth.
Hi Dr.Bergh. i have a question. i already have my braces. i've had them for a year now, and i can only see a little bit of change. like i have an overbite, and gaps. my over bite is shrinking but the gaps im concered. is this normal ?
@bmbrockss27 Somtimes it is necessary to correct the overbite before the spaces can be closed. Also, the teeth need to be aligned well before spaces are closed because the wire needs to be straight and not bent at all. If the wire bends, it won't slide through the braces easily and the spaces won't close well.
@mgc315 Well, that wasn't very nice now was it. Your sister shouldn't have anything to be afraid of. The appliance we use doesn't hurt at all, and our patients do very well when we place the braces. Besides, in our office, you get to watch TV while your braces are being put on.
Hi Dr.Bergh i have a question. what would happen to the teeth on my top jaw because i have 2 teeth that are a little higher than the rest? kinda nervous cause i'm thinking a little about getting braces
@whitewolf96wagar I'm not sure how bad your teeth are. Braces and orthodontic treatment can do amazing things with crooked and out of place teeth. I'm sure your treatment will torn out great!
@MichelleTannerMad Hi MichelleTannerMad, Softer foods are best for braces, things like pasta, sandwiches made with soft-crust bread, chicken, ground meats, steamed vegetables, corn (not on the cob, though), peas, etc. The foods that are hard on braces are sodas (regular or diet), hard-crunchy foods and sticky-chewy foods.
@garyanddarren He's wearing the glasses to keep anything from getting in his eyes. And the headphones are for the TV on the ceiling that he's watching.
@Theguitarplayer007 Hello. Getting braces put on doesn't hurt at all. You may feel a slight pressure as the braces are put onto the teeth, but it's just like gently squeezing your finger. The total time from start to finish for putting braces on is about 60-80 minutes in our office. It takes about 15-30 minutes to put the braces on. Generally all the braces are put on at the same appointment, but sometimes because of the way the teeth are, braces are placed at different times.
Hello Dr. Bergh, Is this a different method of putting these braces on? I just got mine put on about 3 weeks ago. My orthodontist didn't do some of the things you did. Oh by the way, I love all The people that you post on here when they get their braces off. It makes me even more excited for my new smile. You also do a marvelous job on their teeth.
@jthameschoir Hello. There are different methods of putting braces on. We use this method because it helps keep the teeth very dry and clean, and it works best the way my office is set up. I'm glad you like the videos of our patients who have just had their braces taken off. The videos make me smile, too. I wish you the best in your treatment. Let me know how things are going for you.
@nikabritt Hello. The discomfort during orthodontic treatment is not so much due to the overbite as it is a normal reaction of the teeth to the pressure from the braces. Generally, the most discomfort occurs right at the beginning of treatment and last for a few days, then gets better. Each time you have your elastic ties or wires changed, your teeth will be tender, but not as much as at first. Hope this helps.
I hate it when they ask to hold on to something and when they ask you questions!!! It's soo annoying it's like 1 you have staff let them do it ! And 2 how in the world do you expect me to talk to to you when I have a freaking palstic thingy in my mouth!!!!!!good vid btw
@maxfang23 yeah i had my braces for 2 weeks today and the spacers are the worst ! trust me lol braces dnt hurt at all they rub against the inside of your mouth but nothing bad.
I have spacers right now, and I get my braces next week on Wednesday. He said he has to shave 2 millimeters off of my teeth to make room, how do they do that?
Dear Mr. Bergh im getting hopefully getting braces on saturday and do you know what will they give me and what do i need to be prepared for the procedure??
I have a question: Do you have to lose all of your baby teeth before you get braces? Because i only have one more upper molar to lose. I have a pretty big overbite and my teeth are all crooked. I do go to an orthodontist on the 28th but i cant wait until then so please answer, thankyou for your time, bye!
Sometimes, because of a mismatch between the size of your teeth and the size of your jaw, it is necessary to remove teeth. It is not the case for everyone, but sounds like you will benefit from that option.
I've had a tooth out so the orthodontist can make space for my braces, but how much pain is there when having the braces fitted in comparison to having a tooth removed?
Dear Dr Bergh, my orthodontist placed some metal stuff in my mouth a few days ago, i think its called molar bands, and cement is applied to it to make it permanent, However, i think the cement is coming off bit by bit, and im indirectly eating cement when im having meals. What should i do?
Hmm, looks interesting. I'm actually thinking about getting braces myself but I am not sure if I should do it. I haven't been happy with my smile in years. I have at least from the looks of things a slight overbite (not bad because the teeth still match up). My uppers are good as far as alignment but seem as if they shift back on the other side. My lowers seem as if they are just out of alignment. My question is would I be a candidate and if so about how long would my treatment be?
Thank you for your comment. Yes, we are using a specially designed warm air dryer to reduce the moisture on the teeth. There is evidence that a warm dry tooth provides a better surface to bond the brackets to, that the strength of the bond is better when done this way.
On the lighter side, I do kid around saying "Wouldn't it be cool to invent a blow dryer that could straighten teeth, too?"
Have a great day, and again, thanks for the comment.
You should start feeling less and less discomfort starting today. The third day is generally the worst when we start orthodontic treatment, spacers also.
Eat softer foods like pasta, rice, soups, etc. that don't have to be chewed much.
Brushing - just do your best, but don't floss where the spacers are, they might fall out.
Good luck with your braces. You are on your way to a beautiful smile!!
Dear Dr Bergh, i currently have spacers in my teeth, and it is making me very uncomfortable in eating and brushing, do you have any advice on how to eat and brush with spacers? It really does hurt alot, i have them for about 3 days already, Thanks!
From what you are describing it does sound like you would benefit greatly from orthodontic treatment. The best way to find out if orthodontics will be beneficial to you is to schedule an appointment with and orthodontist - I recommend a specialist in orthodontics for the problems you describe.
Oh, and yes, it sounds like you would need both upper and lower braces.
dear dr.bergh i am and have a huge overbite and my bottom teeth two teeth are very unstraight i was just wondering if i would need braces to fix these problems.i was also wondering would i need braces because my top teeth, some are growing in front of others and some are growing further away from some other ones.PLEASE GET BACK TO ME SOON!!! thanks

dr bergh if you have an overbite and crowding do teeth have to be removed in order for braces to be put on
bahabeauty87 1 year ago
@bahabeauty87 Dear bahabeauty87, The answer to your question is possbily yes, possibly no. There are many factors that are involved in an orthodontic treatment plan that need to be looked at. The bite you describe I've treated with extractions and without extractions depending on a number of factors. Sorry I can't be more specific. Dr. Bergh

does the thing to keep your tongue away make you want to gag?? cause it looked like he had a hard time keeping it in
dreamBIGandSMALL 1 year ago
@dreamBIGandSMALL For some people it can, but mostly it's moving because when he tries to swallow, his tongue wants to push forward. It's a little crowded with everything in there, but it sure helps keep the teeth dry which helps the brackets to stay on much better.

is there really any need to use those trianlges.
11bookham 1 year ago
@11bookham The triangles help to absorb saliva and do provide a cushion for the part that holds the lips and cheeks away from the teeth. So we find it much better for our patients when we use the triangles.

hey im going to see the orthadontist on the 16 and i was wondering my top mouth are crocket but my bottom look fine...so if i do get braces do i just get them on the top or i get them both
shelly274 1 year ago
@shelly274 Dear shelly274, Your orthodontist will help you decide if having only the upper braces is the right choice for you. Sometimes only one arch can have braces, but most often it's better to have braces on both the upper and lower teeth. It's a lot harder for most people to see if the bite is off, and your orthodontist will look at that as well as crooked teeth. Have fun at your appointment on the 16th!!

shelly274 1 year ago
@shelly274 I'm sure by now you've seen your orthodontist and they've given you the options for treating your teeth. Most times it is best to put braces on both the upper and lower teeth, but once in a while orthodontic treatment can work with the braces just on the upper or lower teeth.

Rebeccastemme279 1 year ago
@Rebeccastemme279 Hi Rebecca! You probably don't remember when you were an infant and your new teeth were coming in. This is a difficult time for most babies and they are constantly fussing and crying when that happens. When your back teeth come in, you're a lot older and you've forgotten what it's like when new teeth come in where no other teeth were before. So long story short, you will feel discomfort when you back teeth come in. Ambesol or OraJel from the store will help.

Does removing braces hurt?
daisyma100 1 year ago
@daisyma100 Hi daisyma100, We have some videos of patients getting their braces off, too. The videos show the first part and you can see how easy it is. We spend more time polishing the teeth, but removing the braces places the most pressure on the teeth. You can look at by searching for Removing Jacky's Braces or go to our channel and look towards the end of our videos.

Hi I just got braces and they put some blu hard thing on two of my teeth one on each side on the bottom. It kept my teeth from completely touching I guess. The second night I had them one of them broke and came off while I was sleep. Is that suppose to happen? It isn't part of my braces it was just on top of my tooth.
annebreal 1 year ago
@annebreal It sounds like your orthodontist placed what we call a bite block on your teeth. This is used to keep the front teeth from coming together all of the way so you don't knock the braces off your lower front teeth. it would be a good idea to call your orthodontist and explain what happened. They will most likely want to see you soon to replace that.
Dr. Bergh

@brianberghdds thanks. I called them and they said as long as I;m not biting my braces I don't have to come in... so I guess I'll want til then.

i got my braces today and am wondering what they do on your teeth the next month? My older brother told me they take off the braces then put them back on, but i don't really get what he means by that.
killertiger909 1 year ago
@killertiger909 At your next appointment the braces will be tightened. This is usually done by removing the colored ties and replacing them with new ones. At a future appointment, the archwires will be replaced also. Braces are removed occasionally to move them to a different position on the teeth. This is usually done one or two at a time, if at all.

Hi, Dr. Bergh,
I was just wondering if this same procedure is used at most orthodontics. For example, the same instruments, like the tongue holder. Just wondering.
rawrcook3is 1 year ago
@rawrcook3is Different offices use different methods of placing braces, so not all offices will use the procedures we use in our office. I like the teeth to be kept very dry so that the braces stick better to the teeth. Anytime a tooth get moisture on it while the braces are being put on, the more likely that bracket will come off in the future.

Hi. I have a question. If you have an overbite that is almost close to severe do you need to get braces?
7736837742 1 year ago
@7736837742 It sounds like you would definitely benefit from orthodontic treatment. I'd recommend scheduling an initial exam appointment with an orthodontist and have them take a good look at your bite.
Dr. Bergh
brianberghdds 1 year ago
@7736837742 In general, braces would be recommended to correct your bite. With a deep overbite, the lower front teeth can be worn down quickly which is not healthy for those teeth.

AkeelahCross 1 year ago
@AkeelahCross Dear AkeelahCross, Yes you can get braces while your wisdom teeth are still growing. And not all people need their wisdom teeth out. I would say approximately 80% of my patients benefit from having their wisdom teeth removed. But that means that 20% (1 out of 5) people can keep their wisdom teeth.

Hi Dr.Bergh. i have a question. i already have my braces. i've had them for a year now, and i can only see a little bit of change. like i have an overbite, and gaps. my over bite is shrinking but the gaps im concered. is this normal ?
bmbrockss27 1 year ago
@bmbrockss27 Somtimes it is necessary to correct the overbite before the spaces can be closed. Also, the teeth need to be aligned well before spaces are closed because the wire needs to be straight and not bent at all. If the wire bends, it won't slide through the braces easily and the spaces won't close well.
Hope this helps.

Hello Dr.Bergh I have a question do getting braces hurt? How much does the procedure last? do They put them all at the same time?(I'm 13)
Theguitarplayer007 1 year ago
@Theguitarplayer007 Hello. Getting braces put on doesn't hurt at all. You may feel a slight pressure as the braces are put onto the teeth, but it's just like gently squeezing your finger. The total time from start to finish for putting braces on is about 60-80 minutes in our office. It takes about 15-30 minutes to put the braces on. Generally all the braces are put on at the same appointment, but sometimes because of the way the teeth are, braces are placed at different times.

@jthameschoir Hello. There are different methods of putting braces on. We use this method because it helps keep the teeth very dry and clean, and it works best the way my office is set up. Hi Dr.Bergh i have a question. I have a big over bite. My sister had braces and she says its gonna hurt because of your overbite is that true?
nikabritt 1 year ago
@nikabritt Hello. The discomfort during orthodontic treatment is not so much due to the overbite as it is a normal reaction of the teeth to the pressure from the braces. Generally, the most discomfort occurs right at the beginning of treatment and last for a few days, then gets better. Each time you have your elastic ties or wires changed, your teeth will be tender, but not as much as at first. Hope this helps.

Dear 11bookham,
Thank you for your comment.

Hello SuperJuniorLoved,
You should start feeling less and less discomfort starting today.

Dear lilhomiejc,
From what you are describing it does sound like you would benefit greatly from orthodontic treatment. The best way to find out if orthodontics will be beneficial to you is to schedule an appointment with and orthodontist - I recommend a specialist in orthodontics for the problems you describe.
Oh, and yes, it sounds like you would need both upper and lower braces.
