Its going down in the bay on October 2nd, the men of kahulahou are battling center stage with 4 other halau! an all kane competition! i cant wait! you should check it out at the kahulahou website. dont forget to check out the forum to sees whos talking smack!
Say what you will, in my eyes, the man is 2,000+ miles away perpetuating our culture in a foreign land. And btw, did you notice the 34,467 hits this vid has had? I find it amazing that so many people are quick to judge yet they keep watching this vid over and over again. E ola mau ka hula!
People donʻt dislike it because itʻs not traditional (in actuality, the chants are all traditional chants, but his own rendition of them). Itʻs more or less his disrespect for these chants and traditions. He does certain things that donʻt exactly follow kapu. Thatʻs why people tend to not like him.
actually before King Kalakaua women could not dance the hula but, Kalakaua was fasintated that he asked of the woman to dance and thats when he made it so that woman could dance and this festival is honoring that decision he made
Women could dance before King Kalākaua. The assumption is that men were the FIRST hula dancers (which all depends on what moolelo you choose to derive hula from), but women have been dancing long before Kalākaua. Kalākaua just brought hula back into public.
Je comprend rien mais j'adore la danse hawaienne, je trouve que c'est l'une des danses qui nécessite le plus de discipline et je trouve ça magnifique!
Damn! Looks like theres a Hula war" going on here, guys...Makes me think, maybe we should have left it all to the men and never had our women dance...it's not supposed to be an argument between two or more people..Hula was NEVER supposed to be for show, or being "invited" to the Merrie Monarch...It was actually FORBIDDEN to dance back in the days..and from what I see between you two..Maybe it should have stayed sacred...
A`ole pau ka ike i ka halau ho`okahi. (Not all knowledge is taught in one school). ALL Kumu Hula, their Haumana & what they do are beautiful. Tolerance, patience, open mindedness helps one to learn & grow. IMUA.
So whydoyou feel the need to respnd this message to me?? Was Kainoa getting boring??..LOL..Your Hawaiian language means nothing if you don't know what you're saying, so please, no more of it..Mahalo! =)
'Oe ho'ohilahila ka mo'omeheu...I'm sure you know what this means since you seem to be such a GREAT HAWAIIAN! =) And Pleeease, don't be a damn Japanese, or chinese, or phillipino!! I hope I am "disagreeing" with an actual Hawaiian-by-blood person? I would'nt want all this back and forth to be wasted on a Haole'..LOL..
@samuelsotogarcia U shouldnt thro the word haole around.I have white skin. But u know what my grandmother was a native Hawaiin who married an irishman. Then my mom married my dad who is native american, english,& irish. My sister & 1 of mylittle brothers look hawaiin,&very much so.But they dont love their culture the way I do.I hula with much respect love and passion
@samuelsotogarcia But still when I go to Hawaii I am hated on and called a haole, while my brother &sister are totally welcome, even tho they are no more hawaiin than i.... I beleive there is something wrong with that, and it does hurt
really?? wow... interesting. any text where i can find info on hula being forbidden. did u mean that only certain people in certain situations can perform??
It was forbidden for wahines to dance hula..Hula was only allowed for kanes to dance, and as for your "text" to look things up...it's called HISTORY! Did'nt they teach you that in school??
funny guy.... anyway I was implying that you might assist & short cut me thru the channels to a credible Hawaiian authority so I didn't have to deal with an anthropologists opinion or the like, coz, as u know, HISTORY isn't always entirely accurate.
now get ova yrself samuel & please direct??
(asking not to appease mere curiosity but with genuine appreciation for traditional arts)
I'd be MORE THAN HAPPY to tell them that. It's true, if not everyone would win at merrie monarch. And i dont have respect for someone who jumps up and down like a gorilla and acts like chickens and calls that hula. I've talked with various kumu hula about what mark does, and they all disagree with him. Kumu hula like Cy Bridges, Edith McKenzie, Vicky Holt Takamine, they're all enraged by what some people do, and most DEFINITELY enraged by the whole lilo and stitch ordeal.
There you go again with the insults, very respectful of you WOW! Like I said as a Hawaiian I was taught to have respect; to respect people regardless if they share the same point of views as me or not. There are styles that Kumus teach that I may not agree with, but I will not disrespect or spit on them for the simple fact that I don't agree with it. If anything I would want to find out why they decided to go that route in the first place. Tolerance helps one to learn & grow. IMUA.
FYI Buddy, All I commented was that this isnʻt traditional hula (which it isnʻt) and you blew up and started getting all nuts. So youʻre quite the hypocrite. I was taught to respect my kūpuna and those who came before me. How are you respecting them if youʻre changing what theyʻve done and what theyʻve taught you. Going against what they believe in. You think you know hula because you watch the MM. Go out and find a kumu, learn, dance. Then you might realize why people dont like mark.
I respect Kumu young & old; George Naope, Aloha Dalire, Pua Kanakaole, to Kaleo Trinidad, & Mark Ho`omalu. I respect all Hula weather it is traditional or unconventional. I respect Hula weather it is danced just at Halau only, at a funeral, at H`oike, at a backyard Luau, at King Kamehameha Merrie Monarch comps. I hold all Hula & all Kumu with the highest regard. I will not spit on someone for dancing or teaching Hula differently from how I was taught. A`ole pau ka ike i ka halau ho`okahi.
And what if the senior kumu of our time, such as George Naope and the Kanakaoleʻs, Pat Bacon, Edith McKenzie, tell you that what youʻre doing is wrong, disrespectful and needs to stop? Because thatʻs what theyʻve all told Mark, and he seems to disregard and disrespect them. Spit in THEIR faces.
@heyitskainoa i know this is a year late response, but i understand your position against na kumu hula like Hoomalu in regarding traditional hula. however, do you believe that the kaholo, lele, uehe, ami, and other steps were all created in one hula lesson? were the pahu, pu'ili, kala'au, ili'ili, ipu, and other instruments made in the first hula dance? our native hawaiian ancestors were all about progess. e kulia i ka nu'u.
@heyitskainoa as for imitating chickens, then natasha oda- miss aloha hula of 2001- should not have gained her title according to you because she imitated the mo'o in her hula kahiko. and if you are against kapu and tradition so much, tell that to Ka Mo'i Wahine 'o Ka'ahumanu for breaking kapu system and not being punished by the gods. Take away your comfortable home, convenient transportation, and grocery shopping and live like our ancestors to keep tradition.
Iʻm not going to argue with someone who obviously does not know any tradition and who obviously does not know what the answer to a question is. I told you what tradition is. Itʻs doing what has been done for generations. You talk like you know anything about hula and like you dance hula. Like I said. Real haumāna of hula, hula. We do it as a cultural practice. You probably wouldnʻt know culture if it stared you in your face. But Iʻm tired of arguing with ignorant people, much like yourself.
Kia Ora - I am a traditional Maori Dancer from Aotearoa, and watching this just blows me away. The caller has the most mesmerizing voice, combined with the precision and grace of the women performing this tawhito (kahiko) piece, its just beautiful...nga mihi mahana, aroha hoki kia koutou. Kia kite ai te ao i te mana, te ihi me te tapu o te kanikani nei....
How would you know what is traditional? Were you alive 500 years ago to honestly say you know how Hula was danced then? It's not traditional you say...why because someone told you so? What is so unfortunate about this Halau's performance? What I saw was a beautiful Hula Noho danced by talented ladies; Taughted by a Kumu Hula who is not afraid to step outside the box that most have locked themselves in. Why go backwards; continue to learn, advance & grow.
You're right, I wasn't alive 500 years ago. But there's this thing, it's called tradition. You obviously don't know what it is and you put you're name as hula365. Shame. You learn from your kumu, who learned form their kumu, and so forth. And they don't change what they've learned. That's how we have what we go today. It's not going backwards, it's keeping what we've got. If you continue to change, hula will no longer be noticeable, you wont even have hula.
You'll have something that wishes it was hula. If we could keep it going for thousands of years, we can keep it going for thousands more. THAT is tradition. THAT is hula. Mark commits an ipu genocide, hitting the head of the ipu and they hit their ipu on the ground without pale. Using ea that are foreign to these mele. Same thing he did with Kalākaua He Inoa and renaming it as He Mele No Lilo. He's selling off what we as Hawaiian rightfully own.
Human beings are NOT perfect. In the early days Hula was not recorded it was passed down from one imperfect human to another. So how can you unequivocally say you know FOR A FACT that what was passed down to you is the EXACT way it was done hundreds of years ago? Why because you were told so? How can Hula now be lost when advancements have been made that enables you to BUY Merrie Monarch competition on dvd? I applaud Halau that pour their blood sweat and tears into dancing Hula 365 days a year.
You said renaming it as He Mele No Lilo; He's selling off what we as Hawaiian rightfully own. Its a fact that WELL KNOWN Kumu Hula travel all over to do shows/tours/workshops & are paid. You see Kumu Hula do commercials for Hawaiian Air. They too are selling. But you say its wrong ONLY because its Kumu Mark Hoomalu. Why dont you also say the names of Kumus Johnny Lum Ho, Kanakaole(s), & Mapuana Da Silva who are doing the same thing. The pot calling the kettle black!
In early Hawaii it was tradition that ONLY men danced Hula. Its 2009 and Women now dance. So by what you have said about Hula staying traditional does this mean that now because women dance that we are ALL committing traditional genocide? Your point is that Hula should be kept traditional, ok then why arent the women still dancing topless; or if you want to keep it so called traditional then why are women even dancing at all; because traditionally only the men danced did they not?
This is how i know youʻre haole. You follow every stereotype given to you and portrayed by the haole. Men were the FIRST to dance hula, not the only. And it really all depends on what legend you go by. Be it Hiiakaikapoliopele, in which case Hōpoe, a female is accredited for beginning the hula. Or the moolelo o Kapoulakīnau where she begins the hula at Puunānā on Molokai. And they didnʻt dance without tops ALL the time. But if youʻd like to go there, there are still people who use not top
What is the cliche about people that assume? You assume Im haole because I think outside the box with reasoning. Im a Hawaiian born and raised on Maui, than you very much.
and he renamed a chant for Kalākaua paired with another chant for Liliu and Copyrighted it as a name chant for LILO! Thatʻs selling our culture! I DID NOT say that it wasnʻt okay to teach and to teach for money. if that were the case, iʻm sure a majority of his hālau isnʻt Hawaiian. I donʻt mind the fact that he teaches people who arenʻt Hawaiian. Heʻs just not teaching traditional hula. And furthermore, Johnny Lum Ho is another one who does "interesting" stuff.
You are the epitamy of the saying the truth hurts. People tend to lash out when they can't handle the truth. I say this because you have not answered any of my questions, you've only stepped around them. For example I never stated that MM was the only Hula, go back and read my posts & maybe then you will answer my questions. You only see what you want to see; ALL Kumu have sold the Hawaiian culture through workshops, fundraisers, & overseas shows.
And the way I know that the tradition is being kept the same, I look at other hālau who have kumu who have ūniki from the same kumu. Our dance our the same. We do things the same. Look at Mark and his hula brother Chinky Mahoe. Mark DOESNT DO the SAME things! Itʻs not tradition. A true Hawaiian can recognize tradition, even when all else is lost. So go ahead. Support people who sell off the Hawaiian culture, renaming chants for our Mōī for cartoon characters.
Kumu Ho'omalu interviewed on a documentary some years ago and stated his Kumu told him to "do your best & do your own". So you basically are bad mouthing his Kumu too, WOW. Again I ask: how can you unequivocally say you know FOR A FACT that what was passed down to you is the EXACT way it was done hundreds of years ago? You said because you all do things the same its traditional. How is that an answer to my question? You cant answer the question because you have no idea.
People like you believe that hula is only the Merrie Monarch competition. That practicing 365 and putting blood sweat and tears into dancing in competition is hula. But thatʻs just it, you DANCE hula. People like me, i HULA. I dance because itʻs what my kūpuna did. I carry on their name. I dont need an award to tell me that iʻve won. Perpetuating my culture and my kūpuna are all that matter, and I do it for them.
I this whole time have not bad mouthed you but you seem to have no problem bad mouthing me and Hula that you are not used to. Have you not learned Aloha from your Kumu? I simply asked questions & asked for facts about what you call tradition, that you dont answer. Not only can you not answer you twist what I have said and asked. If you dont like Kumu Ho`omalus Hula why are you watching him on you tube in the first place? When people dont like things they stay away from it, not gravitate to it.
Btw, our kūpuna argued amongst each other as well. They had wars, they killed. So my aloha for Kumu Mark, I recognize what he does, but thats not traditional. Ask several dozen kumu hula and theyʻll tell you the same. Thatʻs why he never wins my dear. When he does stuff like his wahine auana of He Oho, that was beautiful, that was hula. I very much aloha things like that. His other things like this kahiko, not traditional.
ALL Hula is beautiful. This is what you fail to recognize. U are caught up in YOUR own definition of what is correct. That is ignorance, its bigotry: stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own. People spit on MLK, Wright bros, Rosa Parks, & Thomas Edison because like Kumu Ho`omalu they too did things that people said was not so called traditional.
Now youʻre comparing HULA to Racism, Flying, Electricity. And not all hula is beautiful. There are ugly hula. One of the greatest kumu hula of all time Joseph Ilālāoleokamehameha once saw a show in Waikīkī and called it chop suey because of what they were doing. You donʻt even know what hula is. You havenʻt experienced it. And you want to call what Mark is doing to hula as hula. Why? Because his chanting voice sounds nice?
I would love to see you stand in the faces of Kumus Napua Grieg, Hoku Holt-Padilla, Ho`omalu, Nalani Kanakaole, O`Brian Oselu & tell them YOU think not all Hula is beautiful, that there is ugly Hula. As a Hawaiian I was taught respect; to respect things even though I dont agree with or understand. There are styles of Hula that I too may not understand or agree with but I have respect for ALL Kumu and their teachings. `A`ole pau ka ike i ka halau ho`okahi. IMUA!
WOW there you go with the insults, WOW! Thats ok I still respect your opinion even though you show no respect. Like I said before I may not agree & understand all the different styles of Hula that is out there but I have the respect not to start name calling and spitting on them. I wont tell any one of the Kumu out there that theyre selling out our culture because I have respect for everyones point of view even if it differs from my own point of view. Tolerance helps one to learn & grow. IMUA.
I have a rather odd request: I have been trying to contact Kumu Mark for months now with no response. I've tried the halau email, his personal email, and leaving a voice message, but no luck. Please, if you are in contact with Kumu Mark or AHA, could you help me?
Oakland California? Its great to see Hawaiian culture being embraced by the rest of the world. I wish we had a school in New York City... For a while "Radio Hula" on Mercer Street near NYU advertised classes but they've long since closed.
I wonder how many other competitors are visiting from outside HI?
Sooooo Beautiful! Love his work! Wish I was in his halau! Plus, he has a amazing sound! My father is full blood Hawaiian from Kona, and really appreciates what Mark Ho'omalu has done for our culture! So thank you!!!
Eh Braddah! Maika'i iho no ka hula no Kapi'olani! Ua nani kou wahine like me ka wahine o ka wa i hala o Kalakaua. Nui ka mana i ko hula no ka mo'i wahine! E ho'omau braddah! E ho'omau!
Inspiring, Innovative & Exciting of halaus IMHO. Some of the movements they originate, will over time, be adopted by other halaus. I've seen it happen. I think it's a positive influence on Hula, as it adds new life to the 'art' of hula. Just imagine how boring & lifeless hula would be if NOTHING ever changed. It is important to keep the traditions to be sure, but interestingly enough, things survive best when there's growth, and I think AHA represents that growth and forward direction... IMO.
he is such a talented kumu, he brings new ideas to hula, just cause alot of people dont like hes new ways doesnt mean he shouldnt be a kumu. the wahine did a terrific job but didnt place cause the usual kumus always win every year.

You only see what you want to see; ALL Kumu have sold the Hawaiian culture through workshops, fundraisers, & overseas shows.
hula365 2 years ago

You cant answer the question because you have no idea.
hula365 2 years ago
People like you believe that hula is only the Merrie Monarch competition. That practicing 365 and putting blood sweat and tears into dancing in competition is hula. But thatʻs just it, you DANCE hula. People like me, i HULA. I dance because itʻs what my kūpuna did. I carry on their name. I dont need an award to tell me that iʻve won. Perpetuating my culture and my kūpuna are all that matter, and I do it for them.
heyitskainoa 2 years ago
I this whole time have not bad mouthed you but you seem to have no problem bad mouthing me and Hula that you are not used to. Have you not learned Aloha from your Kumu? I simply asked questions & asked for facts about what you call tradition, that you dont answer. Not only can you not answer you twist what I have said and asked. If you dont like Kumu Ho`omalus Hula why are you watching him on you tube in the first place? When people dont like things they stay away from it, not gravitate to it.
hula365 2 years ago
Btw, our kūpuna argued amongst each other as well. They had wars, they killed. So my aloha for Kumu Mark, I recognize what he does, but thats not traditional. Ask several dozen kumu hula and theyʻll tell you the same. Thatʻs why he never wins my dear. When he does stuff like his wahine auana of He Oho, that was beautiful, that was hula. I very much aloha things like that. His other things like this kahiko, not traditional.
heyitskainoa 2 years ago
ALL Hula is beautiful. This is what you fail to recognize. U are caught up in YOUR own definition of what is correct. That is ignorance, its bigotry: stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own. People spit on MLK, Wright bros, Rosa Parks, & Thomas Edison because like Kumu Ho`omalu they too did things that people said was not so called traditional.
hula365 2 years ago
Now youʻre comparing HULA to Racism, Flying, Electricity. And not all hula is beautiful. There are ugly hula. One of the greatest kumu hula of all time Joseph Ilālāoleokamehameha once saw a show in Waikīkī and called it chop suey because of what they were doing. You donʻt even know what hula is. You havenʻt experienced it. And you want to call what Mark is doing to hula as hula. Why? Because his chanting voice sounds nice?
heyitskainoa 2 years ago
But once again, i dont know why Iʻm aruging with a non-hawaiian about it. You just dont know any better.
heyitskainoa 2 years ago
I would love to see you stand in the faces of Kumus Napua Grieg, Hoku Holt-Padilla, Ho`omalu, Nalani Kanakaole, O`Brian Oselu & tell them YOU think not all Hula is beautiful, that there is ugly Hula. As a Hawaiian I was taught respect; to respect things even though I dont agree with or understand. There are styles of Hula that I too may not understand or agree with but I have respect for ALL Kumu and their teachings. `A`ole pau ka ike i ka halau ho`okahi. IMUA!
hula365 2 years ago
And i'd like to see you tell them that you think they're selling out our culture as you mentioned before.
heyitskainoa 2 years ago

Mahalo for your time,

Oakland California? Its great to see Hawaiian culture being embraced by the rest of the world. I wish we had a school in New York City... For a while "Radio Hula" on Mercer Street near NYU advertised classes but they've long since closed.
I wonder how many other competitors are visiting from outside HI?
Aloha Big Island, WE LOVE YOU!!!

Kumu Mark don't need to win, his group will always be the attraction of the festival every year.
Just amazing....
Intsikanoy 3 years ago 2
Inspiring, Innovative & Exciting of halaus IMHO. Some of the movements they originate, will over time, be adopted by other halaus. I've seen it happen. I think it's a positive influence on Hula, as it adds new life to the 'art' of hula. Just imagine how boring & lifeless hula would be if NOTHING ever changed. It is important to keep the traditions to be sure, but interestingly enough, things survive best when there's growth, and I think AHA represents that growth and forward direction... IMO.

GOOD JOB LADIES.

He is really amazing, he may not win any awards, but he brings new life to this festival.
I believe he is more well known in Hawaii and US mainland than other kumus.
Intsikanoy 3 years ago
He may not win but his style stands out from the rest. I agree with you though, he is very talented.
Hojix 3 years ago 2
he is such a talented kumu, he brings new ideas to hula, just cause alot of people dont like hes new ways doesnt mean he shouldnt be a kumu. the wahine did a terrific job but didnt place cause the usual kumus always win every year.
