  • Good job John!!! I remember my first qso and it went about like yours! Don't know that we ever forget that first one! Welcome to the world of CW!! Slow but sure makes it work!! Practice practice practice is the "key", no pun intended!! I hope to work you on 40M. I'll keep an ear out for you! I enjoy your videos! All of them!! Keep up the good work.

  • @paullinnell

Thanks for watching and for your comments. I look forward to meeting you on the air sometime. I usually hang out around 7.111 or so.

  • Well done! In the last week, and after a lot of practise, I had my first CW QSO with M3MUB. Two days later I sat and passed the CW test which I took at a rally in Dublin. My CW is slow and erratic, my copy even worse(!), but I'll stick with it and hopefully have a QSO with you soon!!

  • hi John, very nice video.

    Enjoy Telegraphy !

  • Nice

  • I also just had QSO with Ed W7GVE during SKCC WES, 73, NIKO AE6ZW

  • I had to pass my 5 wpm code test to get my general lic, then left it alone for quite a while.

I was attracted to it later and used the iPhone app: morse mania to freshen up. Also listen to the arrl code practice online-- I am a truck driver and spend a lot of time practicing while I drive.

  • @CenturyofTerror

Thanks for the note. Hope we can meet on the air someday.

  • Mr. John,

I liked your clip very much. I am learning CW and i have plany of questions. one is, how can i get a code sign? I don't want to pay as i still learning and don't have an equipment, but i would like to have it and practice sending.

  • Nice video, John. I worked Ed (W7GVE) several times with the SKCC group.

  • Why does everyone put 73 at the end of thier comments?

  • @0122358

Thanks for watching my channel. 73 is a carry over from the railroad telegraph days. It means “best wishes”

  • John I like to read road signs and translate them into cw.Often when I ride with others this is a common practise and really helps alot because you have to do it rather quickly due to the fact that your on the road doing about 60 miles an hour

    good luck

hope to hear you on the band one day

  • Hello John Congrats on your first cw qso.Take your time and enjoy cw.I am sure you will have many many hours of fun with a key,a cup of coffee and a few friends on the cw portion of the band!

  • Hi John, I was inspired to visit your channel after our abbreviated qso tonight on 7.112. I was tickled to learn of your first cw qso was with Ed, w7gve in AZ. He and I have had many contacts, some of them lasting over a hour and across more than 1band. Ed is one of the best cw ops out there and I am sure pleased that you have met him. I enjoyed our chat tonight and surely hope that we can finish up at some point in time John, I will be looking for you. 73 and God Bless, cw4ever Kieth WI0S

  • W5CYF DE KA3DNR...I HAVE BEEN OUT OF HAMMING AND CW FOR OVER A YEAR, AND, BECAUSE OF YOUR VIDEO, I AM FIXING MY ANTENNA AND GETTING ON THE LOW END OF 40M TOMORROW...

  • Nice job! The Yaese FT-840 was my first transciever! Love that radio! Never get rid of it, always keep it as a spare, it will never fail you!!!

  • @ssorel1983

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, the FT-840 was destroyed by a lighting strike less than a week ago. You are correct, they are fine radios and I hope to replace it with one just like the one I had.

  • Well done on your first cw qso. There's a whole other world out there when you know the code and it doesn't matter how fast or slow you go you will always find someone on the bands to qso with. fb es 73 de g6pbs k

  • Gosh, that brings back memories. Those first cw days were probably the most fun I ever had in this hobby way back in 1989. Very cool. Can congrats!

  • Hi John i practice with the G4fon morse tutor that helps. Hi Mike, John listen to Mike hes very good a pleasure to listen to and speak to best wishes both and see you on the bands. In days of old when ops were bold and sidebands not invented. The word was passed by the pounding of brass and everyone was most contented :-) 73 Gareth de2e0bkw

  • @MPPerry3

    Mike,

    Thanks for the encouragement.

My CW skills are improving a lot slower than I would have thought. However, I am determined to get proficient copying at least 15 wpm. It’s been almost 6 months now and I still struggle with copy.

I’ve really come to enjoy CW and haven’t had a voice contact in months.

    Gareth,

Thanks for watching for for your comments. The first contact was a real thrill and one I'll never forget. I'm now trying to get on the air practice but still pretty rough copying CW. However, I've really learned to love CW and haven't had a voice contact in months!

  • First contacts on CW are special, congratulations. You couldn't have asked for a better first one, than with W7GVE (Ed).

  • @lukedoc12345

Thanks for the comments. I am still pretty slow, but keeping at it. You are correct, Gene was a great first contact and I really appreciated his patience!

  • @yinglyca

Thanks for your comments and encouragement. I am really enjoying CW, but it’s a slow learning experience for me. I have really come to appreciate the folks who slow down, sometimes painfully slow, so I can copy.

    John/W5CYF

  • Great video, I'm just getting started learning CW myself.

  • Congrats on you first contact.... I got to get my tapes back out and try again to learn CW.

  • You just lived a defining moment in the lives of a lot of hams. Even though I can't remember my first cw qso I still remember the feeling.

Stay on the air and have dozens more cw contacts - it is the best way to learn.

  • @raccoonnyc

    Tom,

Thanks for your post and encouragement. It's been a slow go, but a very enjoyable one. I am on the air most every night getting more cw time. Hopefully one day before long I'll get this thing down.

  • Good going John. I had to learn the Morse for my Novice yrs ago. Took 2 trys at the FCC office for 5WPM. Now that I do not have to learn it I am trying to pick it up again. Like you, my hearing is shot.Too much partying in the 70's in my case! You encourage me - you probably encourage a lot of HAMS tonight and we appreciate it.!!! Saty with it OM!

  • @GeoN0JRJ

    George,

Thanks for the kind words. It really was an experience, now I just need LOTS of air time so I can get better. I got lost about halfway through the QSO, but still lots of fun.

BTW: I am really enjoying the series you are doing rebuilding those old radios, I learn something new with each one.

  • John,I can confirm you have got his call sign correct. One piece of good advice I was given was to record my own CW then play it back a day or 2 later then see if you can copy it!HI...But you were doing OK considering your just starting out and using a straight key!Hats off to you John. You made your first CW contact..Just keep going now.Don't give up..As your skill increases so will the rewards...I will keep my ears open for you on the bands.

  • My grandfather taught me all that...He is one of the most recognized " Ham Operator's" in the world...I guess I don't know too much about it but he is ...Awesome at it.....he's done it for 40 years ...and has a Map in his office where he has talked with people in almost Every country there is...Great skill to have.. Congrats

He lives in Humble, Texas...his name is Bill Wagner...see if you can contact him...he's on there 24/7

  • Wel done :) Your one up with me. I am still trying to get to note the code. I have a OM that helps me every night here round 8 at night. And hopefully I will go to ZS and get my lisince and get to do more code on 20m with qrpp. I have been following your vid's for a while and think that when you give a diccritption of something its very good for some one who doesn't know what it is. So keep up the awsome work that you do. We all know its a hobby and must be fun to do :)

  • Hey John, cool video. In our newdigital world, there is still something strangely, wholly "real" about morse code or even voice communication on HAM radio.

I am trying to learn morse code myself, and I've used a bunch of programs. Sorry if I'm covering territory you've already look into, but have you tried AA9PW(dot)com(slash)morsecode ? It's divided into difficulty groups, starting with basic letters and going right up to FCC level, and words per minute and character speed are adjustable.

  • Wow ... that was something to watch. I'm new to ham radio and this video is really an eye opener. Much admiration for you putting in a year's worth of study to pull that off. Just amazing. Congratulations!

  • @KJ4TUG

Thanks for your comments and encouragement. The thing that was the hardest for me to overcome was a substantial hearing loss in both ears. I bet you will learn it much quicker than I did.

    73

    John/W5CYF

  • Congrats John.... Isn't there software that will decode this for you as a backup? I realize you want to do it the old way which is way cool. I have seen some high tech hams with mega computer power using a program to decode this really fast. Nice vid.

  • @aaadream

Thanks for your comments. Actually there is some really good software to read code, however I was stubborn and wanted to do it without any help. Crazy, I guess, but I am glad to finally get at least one QSO and look forward to may more.
